Post all the healthy high-cal foods for gaining here.
My 2 cents:
Peanut Butter, Almond Butter, Ensure, Boost, CIB, Nuts, Avocado, Black Olives, Bran Muffins
Reason: 9/2/09: Unstickied after more than a year of being up
Hmm, healthy high-cal foods.
Olive oil, Flax seed oil, Luna bars, Cliff Bars, fruit smoothies made with yoghurt, Bannana, granola, trail mix, dried fruit (including raisins).
Many breads, especially sourgough, ciobatta (I probably spelled that wrong).
Ice cream! Also, any fruit preserves, honey, molasses or maple syrup as sweeteners. Margarine (the kind with the good fats!)
I have quite the sweet tooth obviously, but my recommendation for ice cream would be dreyers either slow churned or they just came out with the yogurt blends which are amazing!! Less fat, plus the good live cultures of yogurt and it's the creamiest ice cream I've ever had. Those kiddie pudding cups are also good.

Complan from Boots the chemist.
Weight Gain drink from Holland and Barrats health food stores.
These are supplements milk shakes and when made with whole milk and not skimmed they can give you 400/500 calories per shake.
Larabars! They are all natural and most have only 3-7 ingredients (all of which are regular things you can pronounce) and have between 180-220 per bar and 10-14 grams of fat! And they actually taste good.
My mom always says, have a cup of ice cream a day. Helps gain healthy weight

Thanks everyone. New to this sight, so will be in annd out. I need to gain 24 lbs ASAP. and also, I have no teeth. had a bad plate fitting when I went to get dentures. I am 67. wound up, they miss-made the bottom plate and put it in the same day the teeth were pulled, and sent me home still numb from the tooth extraction. I went home to bed, when I woke up, the bottom plate had almost severed my tongue and had 2 other sever lacerations in the front of my mouth.
I have undergone 2 surgeries to repair the dammage, but have been unable to eat properly for 11 week. I went from 152 on a 5'-10" frame to 125 lbs.
I am finding it very hard to get the galores I need without upping the cholesterol and sugar to a dangerous level. So need any suggestions and hints I can get.
indian4071, ensure plus is definitely a great option for you. Its liquid, so obviously, no chewing involved. And its completely balanced, so you can be on an all-ensure diet if necsary.
Hey I wanted to share some yummy meal ideas with everyone that have really helped me. Im lactose intolerant, so its hard but ive come up with some easy ways to pack in cals!
A "parfait" for breakfast feels light and dainty, but I pack in 800+ cals! Start with a mashed bannana and mix it with plain soy yogurt, add toasted sliced almonds, seseme seeds, walnuts (whatever your favorite is, I also like pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds) sliced fresh fruit, a cup of cereal (high cal like bannana nut crunch, or even higher granola, I personally like kasi go lean crunch for the protein though) I toss in some toasted oats, flax seeds and wheat germ too... then dried fruits, date go nicely with summer blwnds, cranberries with autumn, currants for anytime, the if you want to treat yourself some geradellihi chocolate chips (no milk)... the longer your in the kitchen the higher in cals it becomes!!!
Cous cous has been annother easy meal for me. toast almonds, walnuts, seseme seeds, what not, boil 2/3 cup chicken stock with spices and chopped herbs, I add sauteed veggies and stir fries stuff, then add 1/3 cup cous cous and let sit 5 minutes, I sometimeas add some soymilk after its done, and some smart balance really can up the cals!
Oatmeal is annother on of those put-in-everything-but the-sink meals!
I really like sandwiches with health nut bread (240 for 2 slices) 3 oz deli meat, dressing, soy cheese, avocado, tomatoe, etc :-)
Cereal blends are fun and easy, sometimes I use granola as cereal, adding a whole bannana, some wheat germ, some nuts really makes something not that filling 600-700 calories!
Umm "icecream" sundaes are good too, I have a healthy soy icecream thats kind've low in calories but with strawberries, crushed pinapple, dark chocolate, cinimon, honey, nuts, and granola on it it becomeas a decadent desert that isn't going to clog your arteries
Protein shakes can add up, I use soy milk, soy protein powder then any and every fruit. I also add a super secret ingredient: bum bum bumm... COCONUT MILK!! it has over 100 cals just for 1/4 of a cup! peanut butter and chocolate is a great smoothie combo, as is bannana chocolate, bannana peanut butter, chocolate peanut butter bannana, (I use cocoa powder). If your stomach isn't like mine, instant coffe powder, coconut milk, protein powder, cocoa powder, soy milk, honey, and ice makes a delicious iced mochaproteinchino.
Big bagels from bagel shops are delicois and come in whole wheat vasries, slathered in nut butter and topped with toasted coconut and bannana slices it can be a delicious lunch or breakfast for over 700 calories!
clif bars odwalla bars, odwealla shakes, luna bars, ensure with protein, boost with protein and simple protein powder soymilk shakes are all thing I use to add calories
If you are uneasy about adding fat to your diet and you need to, I find its alot eaiser intead of makeing everything a greasy gross mess, just add seseme seeds. it goes with sweet, it goes with savory, it goes with everything, it addsfat protein fiber vitamins minerals and cals really easy
Cereal is really my saveing grace though\, because its not filling, its calorie dense, i can never get enough of it and without limits, there are so many to try!! Kashi go lean crunch actually is kindv'e high, and thats a favorite of mine, All the kashi cereal from the organic line, anything with nuts is garunteed to be cal packed, bannan nut crunch, cranberry almond crunch, honey almond clusters, and a great tone is GRAPE NUTS- 400 cals a cup, not sweet, just good (well atleast I like it!)
muffins can be cal packed and healthy if made with whole grain!
12 1/2 ounces whole wheat pastry flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
Heavy pinch salt
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup walnut oil
1 cup soy yogurt (plain) or regular yogurt
1 1/2 cups fresh blueberries
2/3 cup chopped macadamia nuts
(575 cals, 9 g fiber, 13 grams protein, 20 grams fat)
Make them in the mega muffin tins, so you get 6 out of this recipie. in regular muffin tins, just cut all the nutrition facts in half.
Preheat oven to 380 degrees F.
In a large bowl sift together the flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt and set aside.
In another large bowl, whisk together the sugar, oil, egg and yogurt. Add the dry ingredients reserving 1 tablespoon of the dry ingredients and toss with the blueberries. Stir mixture for a count of 10. Add 1 cup blueberries to mixture and stir 3 more times. Reserve the 1/2 cup of blueberries.
Using a #20 ice cream scoop, add the mixture to greased muffin pans. Sprinkle the remaining 1/2 cup of berries on top of muffins and press down lightly. Place into the oven and increase the temperature to 400 degrees. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, rotating pan halfway through. Remove from oven and turn out, upside down on tea towel to cool completely. Serve immediately or store in airtight container for 2 to 3 days.
I like these becase I can deal with a "blueberry muffin" for a snack, but you get almost 600 delicious calories out of it!!
bannana bread is annother good option, but in my house it always goes to waste. Believe it or not, corn on the cob is an easy way to add to your dinners. 2 large ears withsmart balance is over 300 calories to add to your meal!
about how many calories are in the average traditional hot fudge sundae?? :)
(that includes vanilla/chocolate icecream, hot fudge, whipped cream, and nuts)
(that includes vanilla/chocolate icecream, hot fudge, whipped cream, and nuts)
In a bananas royale (which is basically a plain sundae plus banana slices) at Baskin Robbins there is about 650 calories in a regular size. So take off the bananas and it is about 550 or a little more
Ensure and those variety of elderly weight gainers destroyed my innerds...
I do not suggest them to anyone with an intestinal tract, is younger than 65, and that can eat solid foods....
i love ensure. lol
If anyone is haveing trouble with bloating, decresing wheat can help a little and heres some awesome news:
Gluten free things are packed with cals!!!
English muffins- 220 cal
Bagels (tiny ones, so you could eat 2!)- 270 cal
Tiny Tiny cookies- 110 calories a piece
explore Gluten Free Mall if you have some extra cash to speand, because an innocent slice of bread made with rice flour can have like 200 calories!! and some of the pound cakes and zuccini bread that comes frozen are like 240...for HALF A SLICEE!! haha its really cool, I just discovered it. Buckwheat pasta, rice noodles, etc. etc.
erm...thats what I gained weight on, anyway
