So basically due to my light bulb moment on saturday i more than doubled my calorie intake (from 840 to 2000) and i know i need to up it again soon....
So what do i up it to? I'm 22 years old and dont do much activity at all - apart from 1/2 an hr walking i sit most of the day.
Many thanks and i will see you all in 2500+ very soon ;)
If you don't gain around 2 pounds a week then you need to keep increasing past 2500. At one time in a program I was on 4500 a day. At first it is hard to tell because you may gain a large amount of weight due to water retention. It is still important to remain on a high calorie diet
Thanks, the only trouble is i gave my parents my scales as i think seeing my (water) weight increase so fast would cause me to restrict so i have no idea how much i have gained.
I can relate to the not wanting to know your weight at these early stages in case it sets you back, but if you live with your parents could you ask them to weigh you (without you seeing the weight) and ask them just to guide you in terms of whether or not you are gaining? Just a once a week weigh in and explain to them that you need to be gaining a minimum of approx 2lb a week or you will need them to let you know if not achieved this and then increase your intake.
Just a suggestion!
helly79 - Thanks for the idea. I would do this but i like to get weighted in my undies as i feel this is my real weight and i dont think they could cope with seeing my body the way it looks ATM. I may construct come sheet/ towel screen which would solve that problem.
How long after increasing should i weigh myself and take that gain as real (and not water weight)
Regardless you need to eat at least 2500. All the programs I have been in even if one was gaining they would not drop calories until you reached a healthy bmi. They don't want you to drag the process out because more health complications can happen and they also know a lot can be water. Also metabolic rate changes as one recovers.
Abbi333 is right that you need to stay on a consistent 2500 as a minimum, but to know if you are gaining adequately on this then some weighing (say weekly and not more that this) is necessary. Do you have a GP or treatment team who monitor your weight? If so then weighing at home is not necessary.
I am not sure entirely when the water weight slows down, although every body (even people at a normal weight) has fluctuations in their weight day to day due to water. I think though for initial weight gain it is something around the first 2-3 weeks that the water retention reduces. Someone else will be able to tell you more accurately than me!
In terms of the weighing with your parents, I can understand that you do not want them to see your underweight body as I too hide mine, but when I did have an inpatient stay they would weigh us first thing in the morning in very light pyjamas only - is this an option? Generally though you do not go by just one weight as you need to look at the trend in your weight over a few weeks to be sure that it is going in the right direction.
Thanks guys. I dont have a treatment team which is why i wanted some guidance re cal target. I will see if i can get my parents to blind weigh me at the start of next month and i will start eating more as of today :)

Thanks :) xx
There is no debate here: 3000 calories MINIMUM for teens to gain. End of story. Are you going to up your calories?
i'm up to 2500.
If i'm 21 (22 next week) am i still classed as a teen?
Good to her you reached 2500.
No you are not a teen but there is no magical switch that happens when you go from teen to young adult. I would guess you still need 3000+ cals if you are active as a normal young person would be. Bottom line is 2500 is MINIMUM so you truly should be aiming for more.
I am going to be upping the cals again soon, maybe on saturday so i will have had a week of practice at getting 2500 in!
Today though i am super hungry and will be hitting 3000 most likely! :)
