Anyone lose weight on Wellbutrin?

Quote  |  Reply

Hi, I am new to here. I have been looking for answers on Google and I found some had comments about thier experince with losing weights by taking Wellbutrin. I have been struggling with my weights because I have issue with overeating, and binging. I learned that I am an emotional eater. I need help.

My doctor said Wellbutrin does help with controlling with eating habit and weight control. However, I started Wellbutrin two weeks ago and I noticed I have became hungrier since I have been on it. I am concerning about my wellness being.

I want to know if whether it is generic or a brand name that actually help with weight loss and eat control habit. Any input would be great!

Thank you!

brandname vs generic will not make a difference.  It can help with control issues, I know someone who used it to stop smoking, though she started again within a year.

These kinds of drugs take a few weeks to start woring.  Im suprised that your Dr. didnt go over that with you.  After two weeks you are just barely starting to feel the effects.  They also dont work for everyone.

Assuming they are working for you, perhaps you are hungrier because you are actually eating less?  If you were binging before and now you are not your calorie count will be down, and your body needs to adjust.  Or you are hungry and succfully eating less thatn you used to.  Good job.  You still have to put the work in, it will just help you to be able to do.

On dealing w/ hunger:

My suggestion to just about everyone is to take a multi-vitamin, if you are not already doing so.  If you are not getting enough of a certain nutrient your body will keep you hungry even if you've had enough calories.  Also eat less sugar(eaiser said than done I know).  My personal experience is that sugar makes me hungry in about an hour, more so than if I'd eaten nothing at all.  Keep some guilt free foods around that you can eat when hungry.  I keep apples in my desk.  I also keep cottage cheese ni th fridge at work.  For about 110 calories its a snack that is actaully filling.  I also really like the small boxed frozen vegetables.  If you are hungry enough you will eat your veggies, even if you dont normally like them.  Drink water, herbal tea with no sugar.

Thank you for your reply. I take Multi-vitamins everyday however I do notice that when I miss it on one day I have become very hundry. You are right that by taking it everyday will help less feeling hungrier. I will continue taking that. I will let Wellbutrin SR work in my body for next few weeks and try to stay away from sugar. Overeating really scares me. I usually overeat as soon as I get home from work. I eat deli meats, 4 small contains of crackers, and a tons of m&m in like 5 minutes. I feel dizzy soon after that. I become full before dinner even start. I tried to follow 5 small meals a day but it makes me eat even more. It doesn't work for me that way. I was also told to eat breakfast every morning which I don't and I made hot whole grains cereal with few raspberries before on way to work. And I found myself in same situation of over eat after work. I want it to stop permanently because that is so unhealthy.

Again, thank you so much for taking your time to reply. It did make me think the different way of dealing with it. And thanks for clarify on generic and brand that doesnt make a difference.

I have taken Wellbutrin or Zyban to use as an aid to quit smoking once. It actually works in this way for that. After 2 weeks and during that time trying to cut down on smoking, Zyban causes a chemical reaction so it actually makes smoking taste nasty. It allso helps curb the cravings and minimizes the Shall we say, bitchiness effects? It really does help for that use.

I have also taken it for mild bouts with depression and stress. It seems to help in that area as well. I have never heard of it being used for weight loss. Maybe to help the emotional aspects of your life that may be causing you to have eating issues, but as a weight loss drug, no. I'm not an expert by any means, or in the medical field, just someone that has used the drug a couple of times for 6 months at a time, and I have never noticed any weight loss. Now when used to quit smoking I will say, I did not have the normal weight gain issue normally associated with quitting.

I worked for a cardiologist for years and although wellbutrin is actually an antidepressant it was found to have a side effect of weight loss and lowers cholesterol.  I was never once told it suppressed the appetite.  As far as being an emotional eater I seriously suggest seeing a counselor that can give you tools to get away from the food when you feel the irrational need for it.  I personally have tried every drug, prescription and natural, and I find that calorie counting, keeping a journal of everything I eat and drink, eating good healthy foods (low carb), staying away from any drinks with calories, and exercising are the only way to lose weight and keep it off.  I do plateau and it gets frustrating but I just keep finding new exercises to break through it, work harder, lower my calorie intake until the weight starts to come back off and I don't allow myself to make excuses.  I've lost 100lbs and have another 80 to go, its not easy at all but medications will not lose the weight for anybody. EVERYONE has to eat right or exercise or they won't lose weight, even with "diet pills."  My advice is not to focus on pills, focus on why you eat when you do and find a way to avoid eating during those situations.  I eat when I get bored so when I find myself wandering the kitchen I stop myself and say "did I eat yet?, am I really hungry or just bored?  If bored is the answer then I go outside and clean out my truck, wash the truck, do some gardening, mow the lawn or go for a walk.  I still have issues with eating when Im bored so I can't stay in the house when I feel that coming on.  I wish the best for you and hope you find what works for you :)

Hi, I am on Wellbutrin as well and have recently noticed a weight loss. It has been recent because my doctor kind of screwed up with dosage(suffice it to say i'm finding someone else)
the starting dose is 100mg twice a day, but she started me at 100 mg once a day and then lowered to 100 mg every other day, depression got worse, she was like oh i thought you were on 300 mg a day. So now I am on the 100 mg twice a day, and that was a little less than 2 weeks ago when she fixed that.
My weight then/a little before then was at least 148(it may have been more, i am not sure)
My weight when i got home from school(last wednesday): 143
 My weight now: 141

I do need to lose weight, so right now i am fine with this but I'm worried it will taper off. I've been tracking food to make sure i eat ENOUGH

I have never been on Wellbutrin and know nothing about it. I have spent many years eating and binging based on depression and low self image issues. I did not overcome it with drugs or additives. I got some counseling and addressed the trigger issues and thats what I suggest for you.

I want to encourage you in your journey though. I was 350lbs at my heaviest and weighed in today at 268lbs. You can do it!

As far as blind eating as I call it you may call it binging. I dont keep that stuff in the house and I freeze all my leftovers. Aparently the time it takes to thaw something out I come to my senses, lol. I used to experience what I call panic attacks that I would never eat again, thats when I would really clean out the fridge. To overcome that I kept a food journal to prove to myself that I was eating enough and would continue to do so. I still feel the twinges of that now and again, for dinner tonight I caught myself preparing the leftover taco filling in addition to two chicken thighs and fajita mix for two more servings so hang in there. It may never fully go away but you can set yourself up for success and take it one day at a time.

I was taking Wellbutrin for a few months, but I noticed no weight gain OR loss and no change in hunger.  However, I did experience the awful side effect of suicidal thoughts (which I'd ONLY experienced about 10 years prior on Lexapro).  So, maybe I'm in that small percentage of that horrible side effect plus no change in weight/hunger.

I know this all probably won't help you much, but I just wanted to warn you about that particular side effect.  (That side effect didn't occur while I was taking Celexa AND Wellbutrin together, but rather only when I was taking Wellbutrin alone.)

I was diagnosed with Clinical Major Depression since I was 15. I've tried a few others, but I've been on generic Wellbutrin for a couple years now. When I first started taking it, I seemed to stop thinking about food and I lost weight, about 20 pounds or so. Prior to, I had an eating disorder, anorexia for awhile, then binge eating. The medicine helped me stabilize, I then lost weight in a healthy slow way. Now my metabolism is back to normal and I am finally free of the nightmare eating disorder I went though. It helped me, but the side effects were pretty awful at first. I wouldn't take it just for the weight loss aspect of it. BUT, out of most anti-depressants out there, this is one of the few that usually doesn't contribute to weight gain. But again, everyone is different.  :P
