Anyone try the 17 day diet book.

Just wondering if the 17 day diet worked for you? Sounds interesting. How are the meal plans? What kind of food does the book recommend. I am not a big fish eater.

What happens on Day 18 when you resume doing whatever you were doing before the 17-day diet?

I think the 17 days are just to get you motivated to keep up with the healthy lifestyle. I don't think they want you to go back to what you did before.

Sounds like something devised to make money.

The stuff I'm seeing about it promise just under a pound lost per day. That rate of loss isn't sustainable, and is most likely due to water weight.

From the quick google search I did, I can't find any info on what the plan actually involves (specifics, not just buzz words like "cleansing" and "resets metabolism"). So you have to buy the book to find out. That's a big red flag for me.

Why not just focus on keeping a 500-cal deficit and being more active?

Losing 15lbs in 17 days is a gimmick.  It can be done, certainly, by a combination of one or more of the following: starving yourself by fasting, employing laxatives or enemas to clear out food-weight from your colon, and shedding water weight.  In any case almost all of the loss isn't fat weight but food/water weight.  Just about all of that weight will come right back once you begin eating normally even if you eat perfectly healthfully.

I'd say forget the "17-day diet" and roll your own lifestyle-improvement program.  Mine's currently on day 730, two-year anniversary is tomorrow.

No need to make a bunch of big drastic changes, a series of small changes one at a time will get you where you want to be a lot more reliably with a lot less stress.  No need to worry about whether you like the foods, because you only eat things you like - just less or less often for the things that aren't as good for you.  And no book to buy. :)

I did the same thing, I found a step called "re-teach yourself how to eat carbs" so it's probably some sort of Atkins variation.

And according to the link the book can only be purchased online, so you can't stand there in the bookstore and thumb through it before deciding to purchase.

My BS detector's chirping pretty loud for this one.

From that site, I also found this on exercise: "Dr. Moreno gives you a 17-minute exercise that you can do every day to reshape your body."

All I can think of is this. You know that old children's tale from the sea.

The 17 day diet is one of those diets where you order all of the food you eat from them and they deliver it. The food might be healthy but it's very expensive (160$ for the first week, like 23$ a day). You also have to buy the book for 27$ and there's some kind of 17 minute workout video for 15$).

Unless you plan to order their food for the rest of your life the diet is not sustainable.

Dr. Phill will be using it in January as a healthy weight challenge. It will be interesting to watch.

You don't have to order the food that is just an option. I am more interested in the recipes and meal plans and exercises. I need a plan to read and stick to. I hoping the book offers many recipes to cook from. I emailed the company to see.

Well then that should be reason enough not to try it.

Dr. Phil is a great manipulator and a ratings grabber.

A plan to read and stick to: The New and Improved Calorie-Count "Diet"

Recipes to cook from: Recipe browser

I saw the Dr. Phil show yesterday that talked about the diet.  I normally don't watch him but I taped it because I thought it looked interesting.

He started the show by humiliating an overweight couple.  Parading embarrassing pictures and videos of them in an effort into shaming them into saying they needed a "lifestyle" change (for 17 days no less).

They showed a sample meal plan for the day.  IMO, it didn't look anywhere near 1,000 calories a day.  Three meals:

Egg whites and grapefruit for breakfast

Salad for lunch

Chicken breast, asparagus and carrots for dinner

Plain yogurt with berries for a snack

To which Dr. Phil says, "you certainly won't starve on this diet"!  Haha.  Perhaps he should try it for 17 days before he makes that kind of influential statement to his followers.

I'd bet he is getting kickbacks. It's an advertisement for the diet. HE could stand to lose quite a few pounds himself.

On another note I can't stand the way he has "victimized" his housewife group for his own gain. I have very very little respect for Dr. Phil. It's all about his ratings and is own financial gain. I can't stand his wife either. I see through them!!!

I always find it insanely funny when a fat guy hocks a diet book. How many 'diets' has Dr. Phil endorsed? Or Oprah for that matter? How long did the weight stay off of them?

I think you should judge your decision by looking at the people who are trying to sell you the gimick. And yes, 17-day-diet IS a gimmick.

I don't know I don't see anything to unhealthy about this diet. Portion control, healthy food, with exercise. I don't really expect to loose 17 pounds in 17 days but it's a start.

I actually know someone featured on a website that looks extremely gimmicky she paid over $200 for the meal plans. No meals just instructions on what to eat. She lost 90 pounds with exercise and has kept it off. She looks and feels amazing. Gimmick or not some work for some people.

I have been eating healthy, using calorie count and exercising for a year. I am the same weight as when I started. So something has to change.

That's fantastic that you have been able to add exercise and eating healthy into your life.  But losing weight is about having a calorie defect.  Have you been accurately counting calories and making sure you have a defect?  If not, that is where you should go next...not a fad diet.  If you are POSITIVE that you are counting everything correctly, have a defect and still aren't losing weight, it might be time to talk to a doctor.

I have been eating healthy, using calorie count and exercising for a year. I am the same weight as when I started. So something has to change.

What exactly is changing other than your bank balance? You're going to go from portion control, healthy food and exercise to healthy food, portion control and exercise and expecting a change?

The difference for me would be.

1. Portion control. I can't run up stairs to the computer to look up how much to eat of it at every given time.

2. I love to cook. So any recipes that are new and heathy are a plus.

3. I am not good about planing meals in advance when we are at the grocery every 2 weeks. (We live way out in the Country.) I would love something that I could take to the store with me to show what the upcoming meal would be. A plan, a map.

4. Winter is coming which means in Ohio way out in the country that mean I will be stuck inside for days on end. Yes it sounds great to say throw on a coat, take a hike but in reality I have kids that are to young to go with me in the cold or leave at the house. Once my husband gets home from work it is pitch black. And he lives before the sun even thinks about rising. I walk or rollerblade while I drop my child off from preschool. But that came to an end once the leaves fell off the trees, then will come snow and ice. Now when I drop my kid off to preschool it is cold and dark and hitting the trail is impossible. It's scary walking through the woods in the dark. No gym, no exercise classes, no personal trainers - they are to far away.

Having an exercise video to do instead would be nice. What is wrong with that. 17 minutes I could do that. Hell I could do 17 minutes twice or 3 times a day. If I had the video.

We have cut way back. Everytime I hear a wait loss story about someone cutting out everyday fast food, chips, pop, donuts, white pasta, white bread. I want to scream. I did that way back in 2003. After having my daughter 3 years ago I have bearly lost 1 pound.  Our work plan does intensive blood testing to test all good and bad levels. My thyroid was tiny bit low. They said here is medicine you'll loose the weight now. Um no. Still the same. Last year. We ate on small plates, just like they say. Added exercise every day. Still the same. I walk everyday and I have 17" calfs. I weigh 190 pounds my sister does no kind of exercise, eats what she wants and is 110 pounds. It is frustrating.

To me all I have to loose is 30 bucks.

Why not??

If you don't like logging on the computer, get a notebook and log things in there.  Packages typically have calorie information on them.

There are lots of recipes that are free on this site and other places.

Plan things out before you go to the store.  Write what you need down on a piece of paper.  A shopping list.

There are lots of exercise videos out there.  You could also purchase some cheap weights to do workouts inside.  There are endless options.

To me, it sounds like you are making excuses and looking for an easy miracle cure.  It doesn't exist.  Count your calories.  Make sure you have a defect.  You will see results!!!

I'm kinda not following here.  You're going to be stuck inside for days on end, yet don't have the time to look up calorie information or plan meals ahead of time?

Weight is all calories in and calories out, whether you're aiming to lose or gain or maintain.  If you eat fewer calories than you burn, barring medical conditions, you lose weight.  All any diet book or diet plan can offer is a way to (maybe) eat fewer than you burn without the bother of having to count calories.

What counting can offer you that no simplistic diet-plan book can is a way to keep score.  You know whether you're supposed to be losing, or not losing because you're actually eating closer to maintenance-level, or not losing because you're eating too little and your metabolism has tanked as a result.  Counting can be a bunch of fiddly details, sure, but when you don't know why you can't lose weight those are fiddly details well worth looking into.

Allergy Remedies
Is It Possible to Go Natural?
The side effects of allergy medications keep some people from using them. Natural remedies can be a great alternative, but some are more effective than others.
