Can bananas make you fat?

Quote  |  Reply

Okay, so I love sweets, but since I'm trying to lose weight, I make my consumption minimal. At the end of the day, when I have reached my calorie limit, I usually eat fruit. Actually, whenever I feel hungry, but just ate or something, I'll turn to fruit. Usually an apple, some strawberries, pineapple, or a banana.

Is it unhealthy to eat a lot of fruit? This is a really really dumb question, but will it ever make you gain weight? Because I know it has sugar and stuff.

You can get fat eating anything.... as long as the amount of calories going in are more than the ones you use up!!  Smile

An extra piece of fruit isn't going to make much of a difference either way and it's a better choice than sugary snacks.  As long as you're still reasonably close to your calorie target you should be able to continue losing weight.

I've been asking almost the same some weeks earlierSmile. You can check up other people's opinions also if you want...I agree with gi-jane, if you are on a weightloss progress you should strictly focus on calories eaten vs calories burned and that applies for fruits too..unfortunately....But to answer for second question, eating lots of fruits I think isn't unhealthy especially if you eat them instead of junk food.

Some fruits are worse than others.  You can ingest a lot of calories eating bananas, grapes or raisins, and fruit juice.  A few bites, a few gulps and they're gone.  In a short time you're hungry again.

Some fruits are easier to linger over so that you don't take in all that many calories.  Pomegranates, berries, whole oranges, cut up apples or pears.

Fruit is fantastic and anyone who is not eating fruit should.  It is nature's treat.  Eat fruit...as much as you want...but be careful because sometimes it can make your poop runny.

As GIJane said, you can gain weight on eating ANYTHING...that is if you eat TOO much of it.

Fruit is very healthy, yes it has natural sugars, but hey I think a piece of fruit is going to benefit and nourish your body far more then a cupcake or chocolate bar. (not that those things are bad, just have them in moderation.) Plus the calories are far lower in a piece of fruit then other highly caloric treats.

Just keep track of your calories and you'll be fine. Fruits not that high in calories to really be concerned about though some are higher in calories then others. As long as you're putting it into your caloric intake...then by all means enjoy that banana! Heh.

:)

sigh.  They are not "worse."  They are simply higher in calories.  So control the portion and log the calories and you're fine eating any fruit you want.

Nobody here got fat by eating too much fruit.

I eat one bannana a day.

Ive lost over 60 pounds now.

i agree........I used to try to limit my fruit intake to one piece of fruit a day and now I usually have between 4-5 servings. Fruit is good and healthy! I prefer fruits that have lots of water in them (apples, berries)......a banana seems more substantial. It's still good for you, but it probably packs more calories and gives you a less immediate sense of satiety, b/c it holds less water. No problem with that of course, as long as you realize how your body reacts.......

Actually, my mother, gained 20lbs by eating too much fruit.  A medium banana has 110 calories, which is fine if you're eating one a day, and is a better pick than a Snickers bar or even a granola bar, but yes, if you are eating more than 5 or so servings a day you are eating alot of sugar (even at 5 pieces a day my sugar intake is at about 250%-300% of what I should have daily).  Try raw veggies instead.  Carrots, red peppers, and tomatoes are sweet like fruit but with a fraction of the calories and sugar of fruit.

Best,

Karen

Hi. I usually have a banana and yoghurt for breakfast. I've lost over 20 lbs so far... And sometimes a small apple later in the day. Food's food, although some are more nutritious than others. Fruit's definitely a better choice than junk, but when in doubt about fruit, check through the food browser and log what you eat. :o)

Clairelaine, I got fat eating raisin bran.  For me, raisins are as bad as eating candy bars.  And I've heard that drinking apple juice is a serious concern for causing childhood obesity.  It's as fattening as soda.  The fruit sugar fructose doesn't suppress appetite the way other sugars do.

Yes you can get fat eating fruit if you don't watch your intake.

Um, red peppers and tomatoes are fruit.

"Bell peppers are botanically fruits, but are generally considered in culinary contexts to be vegetables."

and

"Though it is botanically a berry, a subset of fruit, the tomato is nutritionally categorized as a vegetable. Since "vegetable" is not a botanical term, there is no contradiction in a plant part being a fruit botanically while still being considered a vegetable."

(apologies for the digression everyone)

You can get fat by eating ANY food.

It's all about calories you intake and how much you burn.  If you consistently run a surplus of calories then you will gain weight.  Bananas are a great food, and good for dieting, but the bigger issue is how much you are eating.

I eat a ton of fruit.  The sugars in fruit aren't like cane sugar.  They are metabolized slower since they are more complex and are eaten along with fiber.  Yesterday I had a banana, a melon, an apple and some strawberries for breakfast/lunch.  I munched on some sunflower seeds as a snack to get a bit of good fats.  I ended up running a 300 calorie deficit yesterday.

Bananas are awesome! Along with blueberries, they're absolutely my favourite fruit. They taste good, fill you up, and they're wonderfully good for you. Here's why:

  • Bananas contain 3 natural sugars (sucrose, fructose and glucose). Combined with a high fiber content, they provide a HUGE energy boost. Not surprisingly, they're a popular choice with professional athletes.
  • Bananas are a major source of vitamin B6: essential for new cell formation and for the processing of carbohydrates. B6 is also good for the skin.
  • Bananas contain lots of iron, potassium and magnesium, yet very little sodium - so they're good for the blood & building muscle mass; and are an excellent choice for people with high blood pressure.
  • Bananas contain 'tryptophan' - a building block for serotonin. Serotonin has a calming effect on the brain: many contemporary antidepressants - specifically SSRI's - also function by increasing the level of serotonin in the body. Which is NOT to say that bananas can replace SSRI's in treatment of depression, but they sure can't hurt.
  • Bananas are good for insect bites - rubbing a bite with a banana skin can significantly reduce swelling and irritation. (I've not tried this, so I'd be interested to hear if anyone has, and what the results were).

There's probably more stuff that bananas are awesome at, but I have to get back to work. So, yeah. I'm a banana fan. One a day, every day. Don't care how many calories :)

Blueberry season is almost here!

I have one question for everyone having this discussion have you ever seen anyone that was a raw vegan or vegan or anyone on a diet consuming a very high considerable amount of fruits and vegatives get FAT?, NO! you eat all the fruits and vegatables you want!,  There is a different between processed food calories and healthy food calories, You might as well count as healthy food calories as to not eating at all because your body is using the healthy food to do miracles for you body and whoever the sad person was you can get fat eating ANYTHING, WRONG!!!

When I first started dieting I never ate any fruit because I believed a calorie was a calorie. Why eat a banana when I could have a 100 calorie granola bar or something? However, I do believe that the body processes calories differently. Fruits provide nutrients and reduce cravings. I feel so much better when I snack on fruits and veggies. I have eaten fruit for lunch on weekends with some nuts which I have had hold me over to dinner.

Apple juice is causing childhood obesity because fruit juices remove the fiber from the fruit thus providing no satiety. The fiber slows down the absorption of sugars into the body. Drinking "fruit juice" is completely different than eating real fruit regardless of any vitamins and minerals "added" to the end product.

It is true that you shouldn't overeat period but I don't think people should avoid fruit like its a piece of chocolate cake or a bag of potato chips. I think fruit gets a bad name sometimes.

The best thing about fruits is that it contains water and has some fiber.  It'll fill you long before any processed food will.

So even the "worst" fruit is at least 3x better than the best candy bar.  So if you want a banana, have one.  Plus it's high in potassium.

If you eat enough, but that can happen with anything.

Is It Possible to Go Natural?
The side effects of allergy medications keep some people from using them. Natural remedies can be a great alternative, but some are more effective than others.
