best birth control for NOT gaining weight?

Quote  |  Reply

It does not seem to matter what I used in the past.   Birth control does one of two things to me:  1)   makes me crazy from hormones  (I do much better with a low, constant dosage) or 2) makes me gain weight.

I would rather go without, but I can feel a real difference in the strength and severity of my periods since I quit taking it......

What GOOD experiences have you had with what pills or shots as birth control?   What method seemed to work the best for you WITHOUT aiding weight gain?

I will do my continued daily workouts and smart eating.   I would just like to not start behind the 8 ball.

I am curious about some of the new stuff like Seasonal/ique and Yaz.  Also is Depo-Provera any better than when I was in college forever ago?   EDIT TO ADD:  also opinions and usage issues with the Patch, Ortho Evra?   the online info was good...

thanks!   keeping it extra safe, you know....

I'm no woman, or no doctor, but I know quite a few women who have been on birth control and a few of them have told me that Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo (AKA: "The Pill") never gave them weight gain, while Depo Provera (AKA: "The Shot") did.  Everybody is different though, never forget about "the patch", Ortho Evra, if you've never tried that talk to your doctor about it.

Sorry if I'm out-of-turn for replying but I thought I would offer an opinion based on what I've been told by some women.

lol  --thanks, envy.   I am equal opportunity.  I like that there are guys here too.

I've never considered the patch before, but it is worth researching.     ( :    good call

Birth control pills don't make you gain weight - at least not directly. They may increase your appetite, which would result in weight gain, but that depends on you.

If it helps, I started taking Tri-Cyclen Lo and have experienced no problems with my weight.

Actually, you're wrong in a sense, Birth Control pills CAN cause weight gain and water retention.  Estrogen, is known to cause weight gain in some people, actually many, especially by water retention.  You're also right in a sense, because they do cause higher insulin levels leading to higher appetites too.

thanks, infinite -- on the TC-Lo option.  I know.... I just didn;t know how to express that the right way.  I think the weight gain comes from water and I know when my friend took Seasonale (a much larger percent of estrogen than normal BC), she seemingly ballooned until she went and got on something else.   I guess we are all different.     (:

any other takers, so to speak?

I went on ortho tri cyclen lo and a diet at the same time, and I lost weight :)

Definitely didn't hinder me at all.

there are many different types of birth control pills

you really should ask your doctor

my misses got the choice of which ones / brands to use

some give different benefits to others

I will maintain my eating and exercising, so maybe it won;t matter this time vs. all the other times......  thanks, lafoutloud!

you too, 32123, thanks!  I like my doc, and she is quick to switch me if something doesn't work right for me, but I was interested in finding out about anything new from friends who used 'em.....   lots can change in the 4 years since I haven't been using BC.     ( :    wanted to hear all the opinions I could get

Hello~ I'm currently on Ortho-Tri Lo and I've been loosing weight as well. It hasn't stopped me from my weight loss, and it hasn't caused me to gain any weight. Just letting you know.

thanks, jenn.

maybe I need to keep the faith that all my efforts would keep what USED to be a problem ion check for this time.  that is encouraging!      ( :

I've not had any problems with Yaz or Loestrin 24. I'm on Loestrin right now because Yaz made me pretty low emotionally. However, I think because they are so low dose pills, they shouldn't cause such a problem.

I've heard bad thinkgs about Seasonal/ique, though. I dunno. I take Loestrin continiously and haven't had an issue, I don't see why you would bother with a pill specifically marketed as "less periods" when you can have them with any. (Even if I weren't taking it continiously, there are only four placebos instead of the normal seven for both Yaz and Loestrin.)

With three pregnancies in 2 years post 35-years old, I'm now over 40 with 2 small kids at home and wanted, no NEEDED, a birth control that I could count on. Like you, I was looking for something that wouldn't cause me to swell, gain weight or have hormone fluctuations. I finally opted for the Mireana IUD (may have a different name in the USA) and absolutely love it. I've gained no weight that I know of, and on the rare months that I actually get a period it is brief and very light. Please note that the first month was difficult in that I had my period every other week. They say this is normal. It freaked me out. But once I was over the first month I've had no problems since.

I would rather kill myself than go on the Depo Provera again.......

I'm currently on a Progesterone only pill (mini pill) called Cerazette. I've had no problems what so ever and as a bonus they stop my periods altogether lol

so you WOULD recommmend Loestrin? I like what I read when I research that one.   I felt a little crazy last time I took bc....  made me all emotional and quick to fly off the handle or burst into tears......

I would LOVE Mirena.   Not in a monogamous relationship anymore.....  I will definitely keep that on mind for when I am again.   I love the ease factor......

Thanks for all the responses so far, ladies and gents!  Keep 'em coming!  specifically, anyone else using Loestrin?

EDIT:  linz post the same time I did, so question:  any idea the bonus of taking a mini pill vs. regular?  I ahave nevedr heard of that pill......    how long have you been using?  any emotional difficulities?

I agree with scaroppo, The Mirena is amazing! Two of my best friends and I were all pregnant at the same time and after having our babies are all on the mirena. We all love it and the only minor side effets that we have had is cramping. Also, we have all lost weight! I love it and I love that I dont have to think about it  for five years!

I was put on Cerazette by my doctor as I had been on the combined pill - can't remember what make now but I had one teeny tiny episode of blurred vision one day which was more than likely a migraine but just to be safe my doctor wanted to put me on the progesterone only pill to lessen the risk of strokes (!) as blurred vision is apparently an early symptom (or a migrain). Cerazette is apparently the best mini pill on the market and I've had no problems with it, no weight gain, no crazy emotional freak outs. I am lucky that it has stopped my periods though, apparently with some people it can cause irregular periods, as with most pills the effects can be different for different people

i am currently on Loestrin 24fe. I have not had any problems w/ weight gain at all. Don't take seasonale, i gained lots of weight on that!

i am on the european version of yaz.i belive its the most expensive, but best kind.  i was on depo for 6years before and did not gain weight with hat either  they told me i was very luckey,  i did get fat though, but that was not depos fault, cereal poptarts and unhappyness

I am also on loestrin 24fe, i had no problems with weight gain. I know people who took yaz and did gain weight. I also think a lot of the time it depends on the person. Some people gain a ton of weight on the same people as other people who don't gain any.

Eggs have been both praised and criticized for their nutrient content. You’ve probably heard both sides of the story – protein packed versus cholesterol dense, for example, are two common sides of the argument on whether eggs are healthy or not. There’s more to eggs than their nutrients though. See how many of these egg facts you know.
