400 Calorie Diet

Quote  |  Reply

Anyone out there tried the 400 calorie diet??? You eat 400 calories 4 times a day. You can eat anything you want at those times as long as it is 400 calories. I have tried this in the past and have lost like 5 pounds a week. Any other stories out there about this diet? I need to loose like 40-50 pounds and I am thinking of giving this one a shot again. Its really easy for me because I am a picky eater, and with this diet you can basically eat what you want but in moderation. Let me know your thoughts/stories!!!

...isn't that just a 1600 calorie diet?

Sounds like...counting calories.

Its called the 400 calorie diet because you eat 400 calories at each meal. It was on the Rachael Ray show. I believe the reason you loose weight so fast on it is because you are training your body's metabolism by eating the same amount of calories spread out throughout the day at the same time everyday, instead of eating like a huge dinner or something...

Well yeah, it's a good idea to space out your meals, for sure. Have you not been doing this before now?

No, I'm pretty sure its because you're limiting yourself to 1600 calories a day, which is a decent deficit for a lot of people. (there is no "training your body's metabolism. Theres nothing wrong with big dinners, or lunches, or what have you, as long as you aren't going over your cals)

Put whatever name you want on it...its still just calorie counting. Cals in vs cals out. Whatever helps people stick to their diet I guess.

The main reason you lose weight on this is that you are eating 1600 calories and burning more than that.

It's okay to eat the 1600 calories in 4 meals, 3 meals, even 2 if that's what works best for you (although 2 800 calorie meals may not be good for blood sugar level and absorption of calcium, etc, etc).

It's not a bad idea though. The only thing I have against it is that they've taken calorie counting and called it something else with a famous person advertising it. Surely helps ratings for the show and leads to money for the "creators" of this "new" diet.

The other issue I have with it is sometimes a person may not feel like eating exactly 400 calories in a meal, and that's perfectly okay. Calorie counting is obsessive enough without having to get it right at every single meal.

Ajaro, same time, same post!!! lol

this actually sounds like a good plan. but the thing about counting calories is that it's really hard to gauge the exact amount of calories I'm taking in if im not eating something standard like say, a subway sandwich. Like, when I'm at home eating whatever my mum cooks, its really hard to count how many calories exactly!!!

when I read the title, I thought 'oh no another one of those uneducated souls undereating'.

I don't think eating 400 cals 4 times a day is much different than eating 320 cals 5 times a day, or 530 cals 3 times a day, as long as it's the same number of calories. It's whatever works best for you (your schedule, your hunger cues, your likes, etc) that's the best choice.

Yeah, the success of this diet isn't the '400 calories 4 times a day' part of it. The success of it comes from the 'eating 1600 calories a day'. Like many responders before me has said- 1600 calories a day creates a decent deficit for almost any person, so of course you'll lose weight! The 400 calories a meal part is just to help you structure your eating and makes you be more mindful of what is in your meals and that ultimately leads to weight loss.

There is no way to trick your metabolism into burning more or training it when to burn because of the food you eat/when you eat it. The only way to spike your metabolism significantly is to do some strength training. Like I stated before, it just gives you a decent structure to follow-- when some people have a structure laid out for them it tends to be a bit easier to follow and succeed.

hahahaha, this could be considered calorie counting for dummies i guessssss.  LOL, non the less i eat 1600 cals a day, spread out however i want it, and i have lost 30 lbs so far.  soooo, i'm sure it works.  I think the breaking it down to 4 servings of 400 calores just makes it more simple for some people.  It doesn't matter when you eat, only how much.

Really just a new name for an old system..1600 will work for most people.

Not everyone likes to snack between meals, so I guess this way of counting makes sure you have substantial meals.

But Rebeccaav if it means you can organize your meals better, then great! I think if it's healthy and it works then it's a winner.

Good for you! Welcome back on the wagon.

I think it's important to be sure to remember to get the correct balance of fats/carb/proteins and getting all your essential vitamins and stuff. If you are eating 1600 calories of chicken sandwiches (or fruit salad or bacon omlettes--you get the idea) everyday, you will lose weight, but it won't be the healthiest way to do it.

That's why I love the analysis option on CC. :)

Good point! Nutritional value is important for health.

I have been doing the 400 calorie 4 times a day diet for 1 month and I have gained 7 pounds.  I am counting everything so accurately and not loosing.  I am 6 foot tall, 265 pound female.  Anyone have suggestions?

five pounds a week? really?

that would mean you have a deficit of 17,500 calories/week, or 2500/day. if you were eating 1600, you'd have to be burning 4100, which would put you in starvation mode.

if what you meant to say is that you lost 5 pounds in one week and then quit the diet, then that makes sense. you probably lost one pound of fat and 4 pounds of water, then gained back the water, and here you are trying to do it all over again.

oops. stupid zombie.

I haven't stopped the diet.  I guess I will continue for another few weeks but I just hate gaining.  Will start loosing eventually?  I can't do exercise due to heatlh issues.  I am so confused.  I appreciate your input.

apaigec, i was responding to the OP, not to you. then i realized that she hasn't been here in months.

1600 should be low enough for you to lose weight, and may in fact be too low. but if you've been sedentary for a long time, you may have damaged your metabolism so much that you're actually burning less than that. i don't have enough information to say either way, but it sounds like you need to find a way to get moving. at your size, you should be able to eat 2000+ and lose weight.

yeah, i'm with pg.  i'll pop out to say that i'm 6'1" also and eat 1800 on my non-exercise days.  and that's a deficit.  i can easily eat up to 2300 and break even, and i have a pretty slow metabolism for my size (thyroid issues).

ETA: feel free to message me--i know it's hard to have a good perspective on what you should be eating or how much you should weigh if you're a super tall female (at least i used to have trouble with it when i first started cal counting and being more health conscious).

Allergy Remedies
Is It Possible to Go Natural?
The side effects of allergy medications keep some people from using them. Natural remedies can be a great alternative, but some are more effective than others.
