1200 Calories a day, moderate exercise?

Quote  |  Reply

Hey everyone,

I'm a teen who wants to lose weight becuase I'm overweight. Not too much, I only need to lose about 20-30 pounds. I've been eating about 1200 calories a day, with about 45 minutes to an hour of walking/jogging 5-6 days a week. Is this okay? Can I lose weight from this? Has anyone else done this, with success?

Thank you all so much! :D

You are under eating as a teen. 1500-1800 is bare min (and not really recommended) to no activity for weight loss. As a teen you should be eating 1800 + and get your deficit from exercise only.

edit/add: Here is a teen cal, subtract discretionary calories from the maintenance for a deficit: http://www.bcm.edu/cnrc/healthyeatingcalculat or/eatingCal.html

Anyhoo b4 my post was deleted I was trying to say, you shud eat more than 1200 calories per day. Check your nutrient intake and check with a doctor b4 hand. (side note you can't always rely on websites like the one above) as I said b4 plz go see ur doctor for correct advice.

wolfie, the mods decide which threads or posts get deleted, not users. If you had a post deleted, it was because it violated posting guidelines, not because a user disagreed with you.

And the website that hollowness linked to is specifically geared towards teens. A doctor at best would use a website like that to form their opinion. More likely, since doctors get very little training on nutrition, a doctor would make a completely arbitrary recommendation that would be more based on what she had recently read in a magazine than on a well informed website like the bcm link.

It depends on the type of doctor you go to and what you ask them to do for you.  Your general doctor can probably tell you whether or not you should lose weight and whether or not you are healthy enough to exercise, but they probably won't be able to do much more than that.

Dear Amethystgirl :) all I said was that she should increase her calorie intake from 1200-1400 which may still be low but I was unsure so I recommended seeing a doctor to be sure.I dnt know how things work in the states but I am sure that here in the uk a gp's advice or a doctors advice is far better than some website unless the website was made by official health boards or something. Like here in the uk it nhs direct. However if you see ur doctor they usually point you into the right direction or refer you to the a weight loss clinic or something.

Lastly most gp's would know what a teens daily allowance of calories should be fyi

No -- what you were doing was continuing to offer bad advice by telling her to eat too little.

Mad -- 1500 is the lowest recommended amount for SEDENTARY, overweight teen females; 1800 is the lowest recommended amount for active, overweight teen females -- you are definitely active, so you should be eating no less than 1800 -- and likely more.

Weight loss should be slow and steady not fast and furious.  Learn how to eat, learn what to eat, but leave some room for the fun things like pizza and ice cream -- they do fit into a healthy lifestyle

LOL! It's perfectly okay, don't worry about it.

Thank you! I'm going to go make some changes right now.

Even though I'm a guy, but I get your gist. Thanks! :D

Then as a guy, you should be eating even more but really I think the gist guessing off the top of my head 2000+ is a way to go, the site I provided could give a better range if you want a better idea. :)

It's okay, I appreciate your advice very much!

I actually have my yearly physical appointment 2 days from now, so I think I'll just ask him then.

I mean I end up burning roughly 400-500 calories whenever I walk/jog, and if I were to eat about 2000 calories a day, this would enable me to lose a pound every week, which is still pretty good for me.

I'm going to ease myself back into the 2000 calorie range over the next few days.

Thank you!

0.0 ur a guy Did not knw that as a guy you can intake 2000 a day. Guys to maintain need 2500 and to lose should be no less than 2200 I think or 2000 as a min. Either way good luck

Add 300 to those calorie counts, then -- sorry :)

Simply said, with that amount of excersise you could probably eat normally and just cut out junk food, fast food, and non-diet soda and slowly lose weight.

What you're doing is a good short term "get it done" plan. It'll work but its slightly more dangerous. it might be worth it for a better quality of life. A doctor can't recommend it but I can see value in it.
Hi, I'm new to this site and would like to say I have been dieting for the last year, I started off on 1200 calories, I gradually increased them to 1500 and have managed to loose 4stone and I'm still loosing but slowly, I will be increasing my calories to 1800 calories within the next week and hope to maintain my weight of 9stone. I have lost an average of 1 to 2 pounds a week, so it has been slow but I believe that is the best way to keep it off. I eat loads of veg and healthy foods and have never felt better. So good luck to everyone on here.
