Colon Detox

Has anyone ever done this using herbs or another product?  What results did you see/feel?

I have been looking at this and if I understand things correctly, I may be eating healthy, but the nutrients may not all be absorbed efficiently due to toxins within my body.

Any insight would be great.

I tried that and it did NOTHING for me at all. It was a 2 week thing and 12 pills a day and a waste of money! Seriously nothing changed at all.
"...but the nutrients may not all be absorbed efficiently due to toxins within my body."

I dont think there is any scientific evidence to support this idea.  Unless you have a severe medical problem, you body is "absorbing nutrients" just fine.

Keep in mind that if you had significant toxins in your system you would feel very ill.
If you have been putting toxic substances into your body, please see your medical professional immediately!

If you haven't, then you don't need to "detox."

The best way to keep your colon healthy is to eat plenty of fiber every day (between 25-35 grams for the average person), drink enough water, exercise (it doesn't seem likely, but it does have a major impact) and eat in a mostly healthy way.  As long as you are kind to your body, your colon is a self cleansing unit.  Unless a doctor is telling you that you need to cleanse for some reason then let your system work how it is supposed to.  You risk upsetting the natural flora in your system by introducing artificial cleansers.
I did it last year and and I must admit, it worked pretty well.  I used to have constipation issues but now I don't, after I did the cleanse.  The detox will give you a headache for about a week or so, but I'm doing them both again come August.

I used a cleanse as well, as I was having indigestion and lots of strange pains in my abdomen... (it was an unhealthy diet, go figure)

But I'd say try it if you are really interested, especially if you've had a lot of processed foods and are looking to detox.  It will give you a headache like technus said.  Just make sure to drink LOTS of water... as the fiber will bind you instead of flush you if there is no liquids to help it along.  You'll even see that gunk that they show on the website... but I feel like it's not necessarily "plaque" and maybe just a reaction to your flora with the psyllium husk.

You'll also be having more BM's so try to time everything correctly if you don't want an embarrassing situation at work :)

I'd say 2 weeks on.. 2-4 weeks off so that your body doesn't become reliant on the Psyllium & stevia... the stevia in the tea is addictive apparently.

I never finished my entire kit and just use the fiber powder once in a while when I feel I could be more regular.  Don't be alarmed if you look more bloated later on... this stuff really cleans you out so you'll have an insanely flat stomach while you are using it.

Here's what the world famous Mayo Clinic says about detox diets in general

Detox Diets

Here's an article from the another source about the use of herbal laxatives

Herbal Products

And a quote from this article:

"Laxatives: Dulling Down the GI Tract First, and most importantly, laxatives do not really cause the loss of significant amounts of food or help in weight loss. They do cause dehydration and reflex fluid retention. Therefore, laxative use is an ineffective weight-control technique and can be dangerous."

"A number of these herbs contain ingredients that act by irritating the lining of the intestines or by directly stimulating the nerves; over time and with overstimulation, the bowel becomes nonresponsive. Laxatives often contain stimulants such as bisacodyl, cascara sagrada, or senna. Bisacodyl can lead to stomach irritation, cramping, and loss of fluids and electrolytes. Cascara sagrada can cause severe vomiting, electrolyte imbalance when abused, and loss of potassium which can make certain diuretics more toxic. Finally, senna can cause abdominal cramps, nausea, increase mucus secretion, and eventually help lead to reduced bowel function."
Jun 04 2007 20:22 The Dangers of Colon Cleansing

quotes from the above article:

"The bottom line? It's a waste of time and money. It won't prevent colon cancer - or any other diseases for that matter. In fact, colon cleansing may even hurt you."

"Holistic practitioners believe the colon is a sewage system and if it's not kept clean, waste products won't be cleared out and toxic substances will be absorbed into the body. They believe that the typical person may have as many as several pounds of fecal matter in their colon, which causes mucus to build up and harden on colon walls.

Science says this is not true. Your colon knows how to do its job, constantly shedding old cells, absorbing nutrients and keeping a delicate balance of bacteria and natural chemicals. Interfering with this process can hurt or destroy these relationships, meaning the colon won't work as well as it should. Colon cleansing is unnecessary, and medical doctors do not advise you to do this."

Hi All,

I was recomended the Colonix kit from DRNATURA, and after a shaky start it worked very well, I did have the usual headaches and quisiness but it did make a difference after sticking with it for 2 month, ofcourse afterwards one has to keep up the usual healthy lifestyle, which we all know about, but few of us really keep.

Speak for yourself about healthy diets and who keeps them.

And thanks for the tip on the newest Dr. Feelgood.

All I hear is bad things about these detox things, so I stay away.  The only thing I did my my digestive system was to start taking psyllium husk, because I had an extremely low fiber diet at the time.  That helped out my acid reflux, heart burn and regularity issues within two weeks.  I don't take it as much now since I get enough fiber from the rest of my diet, but if you want to do a colon cleanse, try adding fiber first with raw psyllium; alot of the so called detox products actually contain this stuff at a higher price along with some crap I never heard of, mostly irritating laxatives.

The thing stating that holistic practitioners believe the colon system should be clean is ridiculous.  It is a sewage system for our body, when's the last time you noticed a clean sewage facility? As long as you get enough fiber your system will manage. Anything holistic is absolute nonsense in my view.

Hi, yes psyllium husk is good, but that does not get rid of the possible parasites, which ofcourse everyone has, wheter you know about it or not, but can cause havock in your system. Thats mainly why I decided on the natural way, with DrNatura. The capsules have garlic and other herbs, which get rid of the parasites, and they odcourse have the psyllium husk also in the fibre.

Parasites? Really now?

Ok, so I eat a ton of garlic and fresh herbs from my garden daily.  If I had a parasite that was really doing some damage, I'd probably feel the effects and would be running to doctors, but I feel better than I have my whole adult life.

The detox stuff is a myth, just scare tactics by the manufacturer who is attempting to make money.  The detox regimens also usually contain stuff that kills beneficial bacteria which continue to break down waste products in your body.

I have a feeling Susiethomas is just trying to sell her product, two total posts only in this thread about this Dr Natura junk.

There really isn't a need to do a colon detox if your body is working properly. Eating a clean diet rich in fiber, and lots of water is what your colon needs. I'd stay away from all the fad cleanses that are out there, they're just marketing scams.

and wait..everyone has parasites? That's news to me....

Well most people have parasites, yes, they are not long "snake "like, in most cases they are microbes, undetectable with the human eye.

Allergy Remedies
Is It Possible to Go Natural?
The side effects of allergy medications keep some people from using them. Natural remedies can be a great alternative, but some are more effective than others.
