Confused on caloires and burned caloires.

Quote  |  Reply

I've read alot of post regarding calories and burned calories, and I'm still confused.   Here's my stats:

39 years old female

current weight 208

Sedentary Active leave, I have a desk job.

Goal Weight #1 is 190.

What should be my NET Calories each day.  Is it -500 to lose a pound a week?

Thanks for any help!!

How tall are you? You can use the burn meter in tools to get your burn rate per day. Just subtract 500 from that. Although I think cc way underestimates the amount of cals you burn. I always set my activity level to light and add exercise to that. Sedentary really means lying in bed all day.

And yes -500/day = 1 lb/week

I'm 5 ft 5 inches.

If you layed around in bed all day and did absolutely nothing you would burn about 1650 calories. This is what your body needs just to function, breathing, pumping blood, etc.

NEVER eat below this #.

Now considering you at least get up and walk to the potty and fridge and to the car and in the grocery store it's pretty safe to assume you burn up to at least 2250.

So keeping that in mind if you eat 500 less per day, 1750, you can lose 1 lb per week. Everyone is different and it's not an exact total but it's pretty darn close.

Try eating at 1750 for a few weeks and see how you do. If it's not working for you go up or down by 100-200cals. Or just add in some exercise. I always recommend only reducing your food calories by 500 and burning the rest through exercise this way you know you are still getting enough food.

But why then Calorie Count suggest eating 1400 calories a day?

I would stick with calorie counter, i asked n RN and her answer was very close to what it said. Im 5' 2" n 145 n she told me 1080 calories n if u burn more u can eat more

it all depends on the activity level you set with calorie count. 1400 is still way too low for someone who is 5'5" 208lbs.

For instance:

If she burns a total of 2250 and only eats 1400 she will have a deficit of 850 and that's fine. But if she adds exercise on top of that it could put her at a much higher deficit which is difficult to maintain.

Even without exercise at 1400 cals I'm miserable and feel like crap. No energy to do anything.

Like I said in my post above your BMR is the amount of calories your body needs to function normally on a daily basis. Why starve your body of nutrience just to lose weight faster? It's also very likely the weight will come back if you eat at that level and then try to eat "normally". Your body has a defense mechanism that will slow you metabolism if you don't eat enough. It thinks it is starving.

Are your saying that an RN told you that eating 1080 calories is okay or burning that is okay?

Thanks for this question and the responses. I just joined today and was wondering the same thing. What's great is that every detail is exactly the same for me, except that I am 40 instead of 39. Same height, same weight, same short- term goal. I do think that CC tends to recommend things on the extreme side because it automatically put my goal weight at 132. I weighed that in high school and was pretty active. Doesn't seem very sensible or "adjusted" for this stage in life...
