Constipation

Quote  |  Reply

I know it's gross (and it's a bit embarrassing to talk about it), but this is getting out of hand. I feel horrible. I'm not sure what's wrong. I'm eating whole wheat and whole grain carbohydrates, veggies and fruit, yet for three days I don't seem to be going anywhere. I've been having this problem for a little less than a month now, and I can't depend on laxatives forever. Please, I'm begging, does anyone have any suggestions?

Drink Lots of water and take Fibre One once a day! It works!!

Magnesium, especially if you take calcium.  And water....

Hi Jayblue: Here is my very basic and simple solution: FIRST THING IN THE MORNING: 2 glasses of water (at room temperature) along with a fruit or two of your choice and one cup of something hot (like plain black coffee). As you drink this very slowly, massage your stomach a little.  It works for me every time. xo

jayblue - a salad of raw grated beets and carrots (w/ fave dressing, sunflower seeds,  and a little feta)  taken in the evening really gets things going for me the next morning!  Of crs,  there are prunes, plums,  and even plum jam.

Also,  i second the water and walking advice.  You could try having a large glass of hot/warm water first thing in the morning.

Senna (an herb),  I believe,  is a stimulant laxative -- that's the kind that causes dependency,  so prob.  best to avoid that.  Not all "natural" things are beneficial.   Stool softeners and fibre supplements are much safer;  its my understanding that they work by bulking up the stools,  not by actually acting directly on the bowels.

I used to work in group homes for mentally handicapped,  and to treat our constipated clients without drugs,  we'd make up a batch of "Fruit-Lax,"  a mixture of prunes,  maybe figs,  all pureed up together.  Try googling it.

Good Luck!!

A spoonful of chia seeds in your smoothie or cereal will do the trick.  Chia seeds also have lots of Omega threes and antioxidants.

Hi, I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned this but I think probiotic and plenty of water is the answer.  You may need a bit of prune juice early on to get things started, but after that, water and a daily probiotic should do the trick!  Good luck!

capsicum... even a bit of mild red chile powder.... sprinkle on fruit, salad, toast, plain yogurt... or red chile sauce over veggies, meat, mexican food...  get creative if you like it...

and you can get capsicum capsules at an herb store of you don't want to eat chile... but do be careful as it's just as hot "later on" if you get my drift...;-)

along with lots of water and fruit and veggie rich diet of course...

Water, coffee, apples, and raw almonds always seem to work for me.

lots of good sugestions

this works for me and tastes great for any time of day  and is just a great recipe  adding other veg in or some chopped chicken breast or other meat makes it a full meal casserole .

contains vitamins healty oil and lots of natural fiber loads of naturaly occuring moisture.

roasted summer  squash   ( yellow summer squash has the most effect ,as the skin is a bit more dense and the seeds more fibery than most zucchini )

pick larger squash ( thicker skin and seeds have more laxitive action)

using one or a mix

several squash   I usually do yellow and green

onions chopped the same if you like them  ( I do )

garlic to taste  ( powder or chopped )

salt ,pepper and other seasonings to taste  ( I usually add garlic onion and basil . but also at times use added oregano  and rosemary )

3-4 tablespoons oilive oil to a large casserole dish vegetables

I slice into quarters length wise then into 1/2" chunks

toss with olive oil and seasonings and bake at 400 for 30-40 minutes or untill the squash is tender

roasting like this gives wonderful flavor , I can eat this for breakfast or a side dish  , great with meats or a salad

adding carrots or extra onions gives colors and texure changes so it never gets old  I plan on making a big pan today with added carrots

and within 24 hours of having 2 servings the fiber has usually done its job and I am back to normal .

I had the same problem, and was having to give up dairy, greek yogurts, cheese. So now that I am a vegan, fresh fruits and veggies are definately doing the trick!

Apart from the veggies( I'm guessing they're mostly green)you're eating mostly carbs and sugar. That'll send you to the crapper and spike your insulin to outrageous levels. Eat more protein, like steak, chicken, tuna, eggs with  that salad and your BM's  should improve. Plus you'll feel fuller and eat less junk or snack every other hour. Psyllium also works wonders in a pinch.

I have had chronic constipation my entire life and have tried every product imaginable. I use MiraLax daily, it is tasteless and can be mixed in any liquid. I mix it into my morning coffee. (You may need to adjust the dose to your needs but start with once a day. It may take up to 4 days to start working.) I also eat Fiber One bars fairly regularly along with plenty of fresh fruits & veggies. AND drink plenty of fluids. Some of us have trouble in this department and more help than just diet alone.

If you've suddenly increased your fiber intake, you need to drink lots of extra water to help with the digestion of it. Even if you haven't upped your fiber intake, more water will help with constipation.

Exercise also helps a lot. The more sedentary you are, the more likely you are to get constipated.

It's important to go to the bathroom right when you have the urge to go and not put it off. I know it's hard if you're in a public place or at someone else's house, but if you need to go and you don't go, your feces sit in your large intestine and more and more water gets absorbed from them. That makes them rock hard and very difficult to push out.

For me, drinking a few cups of coffee each morning is what makes me have the urge to go. Stimulant like caffeine will sometimes help.

Finally, I'd suggest opting for a stool softener instead of laxatives. You can take a stool softener long term and laxatives are dangerous to take longterm.

Also, things like opiates, iron supplements, calcium supplements, antacids if they contain aluminum or calcium, antidepressants, and diuretics (like for high blood pressure) can all cause constipation. So if you've recently started taking anything like listed, that could also be to blame.

Hope that all helps!

Water. I did the same thing recently. I had been drinking about 6 glasses a day and although I wasn't constipated I was only going once-twice a week(which is how often I've always gone). I started drinking 15 glasses a day(which isn't as bad as it seems), and now I go once to twice a day. Just try drinking 9-10 glasses a day

Milk of magnesia with  glass of water before bed. People who suffer IBS swear by it and it's much more comfortable and better for you than a lot of the other stuff. An old classic for a reason. Try 2 capfuls first time to get you moving then adjust the dose as needed maybe twice a week.

Hi, I used to have that very same problem until I started eating unsalted sunflower seeds and a varitey of nuts,  no more problems since. I have a 1/4 cup with my cereal and as a snack and on salads. You can still have your water and fibers but out of every other thing I've tried, the nuts and seeds worked best for me. Give it a try for a week and see the difference, I swear by this.

I swear by it, too.  I eat a homemade meal bar that has raw oatmeal, flax seed meal, wheat germ, raw almonds, raw peanuts and olive oil in it, with a banana. every morning.  I drink 2 qts of tea over ice starting when I wake up and when the 2 qts are gone I switch to ice water.  Water and raw foods make an amazing combination and keep you regular.  If you've recently cut out saturated fats then I recommend a one-portion sized Hershey's chocolate bar every Sunday (medicinal),  it will loosen you up.  lol  Taking away fats, good bad or whatever, isn't a completely good thing.

* I weighed 216 on 4/1/08, I weighed 162 this morning.  Goal weight 164, maintained for 8 months.  Chocolate bar every Sunday  :)

Not many people said it, although a few people have mentioned nuts, but eat more FATS! They can be healthy fats; but this helped me the most. It's easy to overlook eating enough fat since when you're trying to eat healthy, fat is supposedly the enemy but it isn't, you need it!

from a chronic sufferer - i can relate. And i will say, there is such a thing as too much fiber! Regardless of how much water you drink, how long you run, or the number of hours of sleep you get a night, sometimes things just don't want to move

Others suggested the smooth move teas. i love these, and here's  my secret: brew some of that chocolate smooth move tea with half water and half skim milk, add a tsp. of organic honey. steep 2 to 4 minutes, then add a cap of miralax and stir till disolved.

works every time for me. no cramps, no straining. sometimes i wonder just how much crap can one body hold lol

try at your own risk - i am no doc. but my gastro did suggest this remedy and it seems to be the only thing that works consistently for me w/o the discomfort of those other laxatives.
