Well I have ordered some in my shopping this week, but I'm really not sure if I will like it. I remember my sister eating it when I was young and I remember thinking it looked like it had already been digested. The one I have ordered has chives in it too.
So what people opinions of Cottage Cheese? What does it taste like? And do people like it?
Edit: Sorry, I think I should have put this in the food section.
Cottage cheese is not my bag. ![]()
I don't have much of a sweet tooth, but cheese is my downfall (Swiss Gruyere, Applewood Smoked Cheddar, Norwegian Jarlsberg, German Butter Cheese... yum yum yum - but all so unhealthy...) ![]()
So I have looked into lighter cheeses as an alternative and after a bit of trial and error these suit my taste (but I generally don't have much of them):
- Feta Cheese cubes - sprinkled into salads
- Low fat Mozarella - when you want a cheese that melts nicely
- Grated Parmesan - over pasta, but not much of it
- Mild goats cheese - on a piece of toast
Thanks for that... actually that reminds me of something I was thinking. Can you melt cottage cheese? For example on toast.
You can try mixing it with some fruit at first to get used to the texture. I love adding some pineapple bits to mine, but pears and strawberry slices are another fun option. A little bit of applesauce is also another common mix in. I don't know about heating it ..?
Also, if you like (and can control yourself!) nacho type chips, I like to mix a little cottage cheese with salsa as a dip option. But only when I'm feeling really in control and not tempted to eat half a bag:)
I like it a lot, but with fruit, and sometimes with a little bit of sweetener mixed in.
I wouldn't know what to do with one that had chives in it. Maybe as a sour cream substitute on a baked potato?

I have never tried melting cottage cheese but I absolutely love putting it on toast. Sometimes I fry some tomatoes and put those on top of the cottage cheese and toast as well. I never cared for cottage cheese until I started thinking of it as a savory food. I think in my mind I kind of associated it with yogurt, since it's next to the yogurt at the market and whatnot... anyway, I hope you like it! I started out cottage cheese with some flavored varieties... Rachel's brand, I think. I hope you like it.
I don't know about melting it, but you could definitely blend it so that it has an even texture, and use it as a spread.
I like mine plain. My mother used to make a dessert with it using whipped cream, jello powder, and canned mixed fruit. That was pretty good too. But I don't have an adventurous palate.
Cottage cheese is not my thing either. It's not that I can't eat it if I had to, I don't think it tastes all that terrible when mixed with fruit. It's just not a suitable substitute for cheese for me- I think of it more like yogurt- and in that case, I would rather eat plain yogurt w/ fruit or similiar mixed in. backinthenines gave some pretty good suggestions that I happen to use myself.
I LOVE CHEESE. It took me years to learn that everything I ate did not have to have cheese melted on top of it. I make up for not having cheese a lot of the time with making foods extra spicy with various hot sauces. With all the heat, it's hard to miss anything else! Now I crave spice instead.
Great stuff. I like the following:
- Cracked black pepper
- Diced tomatoes
- olives
- tuna
- peanuts
- package of Italian dressing mix
- cream and add favorite dip mix, or blend with a little milk to make salad dressing
- stuff a baked potato, add some chives or parsley, salt and pepper
It's also good for your dog, if you have one![]()
Some great replies. Thanks so much!
You can melt SOME cottage cheese. I actually melt it all the time on my baked potato and then mash it all together. Little bit of black pepper on that and you have lunch :)
Directions: Wash 6oz potato and poke holes with fork. Put in a bowl and cover with a wet paper towel. Microwave for 3 minutes. Flip potato over and microwave for another 2.5 minutes. Cut open baked potato and put 1/4 cup cottage cheese on top and spread out. Microwave for 1 minute 15 seconds. Put on desired amount of black pepper. Mash with fork and eat :)
The only cottage cheese I will eat is made by Shamrock Farms (fat free - green label). I've found it to be the least watery and it tastes like CHEESE. I've tried several brands, and they were all to watery and and gross. Kudson cottage cheese will not melt. Disgusting stuff.
I am totally weird about texture and avoided this stuff like the plague until one night at a local german place I was starving and they put some down on the table with crackers before our meal came. I gave in and tried a forkfull on a saltine, it was fantastic!
They mixed horseradish (the grated kind, not the creamed) and chives. I add horseradish at home now and eat it with Wasa crackers, it's a perfect snack.
Also, I have found that I prefer a more natural cottage cheese, something without gums and the like. In Connecticut they have Friendship brand and I really like it, the texture is smoother than the Hood kind.
I saw this post and got really excited. I love cottage cheese. I live in the UK and everything is in smaller portions here than in the US. . .so I can get a little tub of it that has about three servings and not go overboard. I usually get the fat free kind with chives (like you!). When I was younger it really repulsed me when my mom would eat it. . .but then one day I had some with Ritz crackers and loved it. Maybe start off eating it with someone really indulgent like a few buttery crackers so you can wean your way into it? I like mine savory. . . I cut up about a cup of cucumbers, add 1/2 cup of FF cottage cheese, add some pepper, and then enjoy! Also, sometimes I slice up a whole wheat pita and spray it with a little bit of I Can't Believe It's Not Butter, sprinkle on some pepper, and then throw it under the broiler for 2 minutes. Yummy, crispy whole grain crackers to dip without all the added salt :) My flatmate is Indian and she makes some AMAZING dishes with cooked cottage cheese. If you want to cook it maybe search some Indian recipes :)
I didn't think cottage cheese was my thing either but I really enjoy it. I needed different ways to eat fruit with protein to keep my blood sugar from spiking so I add everything from berries to chopped tangerines. I also sprinkle a tablespoon or two of chopped, roasted, unsalted almonds for crunch. I do the same thing with unsweetened greek yogurt but add a half cup of fiber one along with the fruit.
Do you have Trader Joes stores where you live? If so, I think their brand of cottage cheese and Greek yogurt is the best.
It's the best thing ever!! I get most of my protein from it & other cheeses since I don't eat a lot of meat, it tastes so good! I usually get the no salt added kind though because regular versions have a lot of sodium, but it's still very healthy for you either way!
There's a lot you can do with it to, besides eating it by itself (guilty hehe)
you could add fruit or mix in sugar free preserves, you can eat it with apple slices, you can use it as dip with chips, or you could even use it in cooking as a secret ingredient (I like to top my pita pizzas with it sometimes) you could do almost anything with it ![]()
I'm actually in the UK, so don't have access to some of the brands/shops that you have mentioned. I do my food shopping online at Sainsbury's, and its coming tomorrow, so I'm getting quite excited now... :)
If the one I ordered isn't much good, they sell a few types so I wont give up straight away.
I ordered some other food to go with it, but seeing as most of you eat it with baked potatoes or with fruit you might laugh at me when I tell you what I was thinking... So I ordered some crumpets, tomato puree and cottage cheese and I was planning on making crumpet pizzas. I estimated they would be around 150 calories each, so I thought two of them would make a great lunch. Or one would make a great snack. :) I thought I could always add some pineapple or sweetcorn too (fyi I put sweetcorn with everything).
I bet you all think I'm barmy now! :)
I absolutely love cottage cheese! I like the one low fat one with chives... I don't know if this is weird but I put it in all my sandwiches, especially in tuna salad, turkey rashers or lean ham or turkey sanwiches... it adds so much flavour! And it's hard to find flavour in my sandwiches after I have put in a large lettuce leaf, a whole tomato which is about 8 slices, 8 slices of cucumbers, 2 slices of onions, and 2 gherkins all in a 30 gram whole wheat round roll! And yes it's a balancing act until you get to make it so perfectly everything stays in place even when you pick it up. LOL! I don't have to eat until 4 hours later after one of my sandwhiches... ;o)
I mix cottage cheese with thawed frozen blueberries and top with a homemade cinnamon vanilla granola that I make. I eat this almost every day.
I also really like cottage cheese mixed with salsa as a dip for tortilla chips. Just make sure to portion out 1 ounce before you start eating or else you may lose track of how many chips you ate.
I also like cottage cheese on top of ritz crackers with a smidge of strawberry jam, but I don't eat this very often, too many calories, and it's hard for me to stop eating them.
My CC friend got me hooked on this cottage cheese dessert:
I use 500g fat free cottage cheese, 1/2 cup splenda (or white sugar if you want), 1 tbsp cocoa, 1 tsp instant coffee. Blend it till smooth with hand blender or regular blender. Chill and serve with fresh berries. Yum!
I separate it into 4 portions, each have 100 cals, 0.3g fat, 15g protein.
