We went to the State Fair today and I was dreading lunch because I knew there wouldn't be many healthy choices at all. We walked past every food booth know to man "fried, on-a-stick, loaded with oil, dripping with fat, etc" While many of these things looked so yummy, I knew I would feel bad after eating them. We kept walking and stumbled upon a huge food place that had BBQ chicken (white meat) and you could have corn on the cob, plain green beans and steamed carrots as sides. I was so happy to actually see vegetables at the fair! So that was my lunch and it was very good and I even treated myself to a caramel apple (very small one w/ very little caramel). I actually came home feeling pretty good about my day at the fair. So, it goes to show you if you look hard enough there is usually a better choice out there. It is no wonder so many people are overweight judging by all the crap I saw consumed today there... egads! The worst was a lady eating a huge piece of fried cheesecake that was then dipped in chocolate. I don't even want to know the nutritional info on that!

Moke,
Doesn't it feel *so* good when you go to a place like that, and are able to avoid temptation?!
APPLAUSE, APPLAUSE!
You deserve a standing ovation. Seriously, we need to praise ourselves more for days like these.

You're the first person talking about this, on these forums, that has been positive and didn't resort to eating funnel cake and corn dogs because of the lack of choices. Thank you!
yeh, well bloody done!! that must have been a real feel good moment. Seeing al lthose people eating junk, dont you just want to go up and ASK them how they can eat that and how many cals is in it? bet they wont thank you, though.
you know i went to one once and bought this 'caramel honeycomb' without thinking about the ingrdents, and assume it WAS honeycomb. I then read the side after opening the packet and nibbling a tiny bit, i read 'bicarbonate of soda, sugar. colour' i blinked, and then put the bag that had cost me 2 pounds stright in the bin! blah! Fair food is REALY full of crap.. other than that lady did you see anything else that made you glad your on a healthy lifestlye change?
HU-RAH for sence and control!! well done you and i hope more people go by your example!!

I'm glad you posted that on here. My kids and I are going to our Fair today and I was worried about me eating lots of junk there, but by what you've said, I'll just have to look around and make other decisions. I actually even thought about not going, but I think I will because my kids will love it and I know that I'm strong enough now because of CC that I can resist the temptation. Thanks again for posting your success!
I have no control around funnel cake! Where can I look to find out just how bad it is for me? Sometimes just knowing that is enough to turn me off a food, or at least make me restrict portions/frequency.

That's just the dry ingredients, not the grease it's fried in!!!

Was this the Texas State Fair?
I just checked your profile and you're not in Texas, nevermind.

kellywood - the TX state fair starts the last weekend of this month.
My philosophy on fair food is this - it only comes around once a year and there's nothing else like it, so indulge. You don't have to everything in sight, but having 2 or 3 treats one day out of 365 is not going to undo weeks of hard work & being healthy.
It'd be like not having mashed potatoes, gravy and dressing on Thanksgiving.

I just assumed that the fair had started because there was an article covering the fried food competition - must be a pre-fair promo thing. I don't remember what the best fried food winner was, but "Fried Coke" won for most bizarre.
I went to the Kansas state fair this weekend and did pretty well. I ate a light breakfast (about 200 cal) because I was saving up so to speak for the fair. I managed to find a buffalo burger and split it with my friend. Buffalo is lean so I did pretty well there. My downfall was 2 cups of lemonade, and then after the fair we went to Freddie's Frozen Custard and got a steak burger patty melt on rye, which was really really good, followed by about 1/3 cup of a custard shake... threw the rest of the "small" sized serving out. All in all, I was right around my goal for the day since I walked for 3 hours. Did pretty darn good!
I just went to the fall fair a little while back-bought cotton candy, 1/2 piece of fudge(instead of 3), and a honey comb-a week later-the fudge is gone-still have half the cotton candy(if you put it in fridge it lasts a couple weeks)-and have yet to touch the honey comb-last year I ate all that and a little more fudge in 2 days. Funny how a little time here will change your perspective on temperary pleasure foods that have long term issues-I still like to eat it-I just take a very long time to eat smaller amounts of it.
kellywood- the fried praline won best overall.
fried coke is so weird i will try it. no holds barred that day!
