Feeling the compulsion to eat -- what do I do?

I know I'm not hungry physically, but all I want to do right now is consume (either eating relatively healthy food, or buying junk food just to chew and spit it).

I've had a good day today (eaten the right amount, and of good food), and I don't want to wreck that. How can I fight my cravings?

How many calories are you consuming?

 Chew and spit is disordered eating and very dangerous.

Chew gum?  Drink some hot tea?  Find an activity that will engage your attention and turn it away from food?  Take a walk or do some other physical activity? 

And make sure you are getting enough cals and nutritious foods to support your activity level so your body doesn't feel deprived.  Definitely do not chew and spit!

I know it can be a very dangerous eating disorder, but honestly, it hasn't effected me like it has many others. I'm not anorexic, or bulemic, and I never have been (even after months of CS). I appreciate the concern, and I'm being careful with it, and trying to quit. My main problem with it is that it breaks my budget, but I am very aware that it can lead to serious eating disorders, which is why I'm trying to quit. I've not quit perfectly, but I am only doing about 1/4 of what I used to (on average. Today is my third day of quitting), so I think that's progress.

I'm running a calorie decifit of around 500 a day, which I believe is reasonable. I've been eating healthily today, so I think I've got the nutrition I need. Though now you mention it, I am very low on fat intake. I'll watch that tomorrow.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. A cup of tea and a walk sounds good right now.

How many cals are you eating?  Make sure you figured your total output properly to get your deficit.  I would say if you can't quit the chewing and spitting cold turkey, you have a problem and may need professional help :(

Thanks for the advice. I've quit addictions (much more addictive than this, mind) before without proffessional help, but never cold turkey. If I'm still doing it in two weeks or so, I'll talk to a proffessional. I've definately gotten better so far, and without much trouble.

 

When I feel like mindlessly munching, but I know it's not genuine hunger because I've gotten everything I need for the day, I usually go brush my teeth or make ginger tea.  It's hard, I know.  Lately, I've been on a giant binge, and I'm just now getting myself back on track after actually splitting my work slacks sitting down.  Horrifying and embarrassing. 

See if it works for you, too.  Go grab the dental floss and give your gums some TLC, then brush away.  It'll keep you busy for a little while and make your mouth nice and minty.
