6 feet tall ladies out there! Let's talk!!!

Quote  |  Reply
I am 6 feet tall, and weigh 193 lbs.  All of the weight charts say that we should be about 160 (no more than that), but because I have a small frame (wrists are tiny), I should be even littler (130s or 120s).  Does anyone else think that this is crazy?  I weighed 130 when I was anorexic in high school, and there is no WAY that this can be a healthy weight for women.

I wear a size 10 or 12, and most people would describe me as athletic looking or even thin!  I feel like some of the ideal weights are a bit unrealistic.  I am still trying to lose weight because I am comfortable around 160, but I want to know what everyone thinks.

Thanks!

I think that the powers that be do not believe that 6' women truly exist. This is also my theory for why I can't find pantyhose where the crotch doesn't hover around my knees.

I am 5'11" and hover between 130 and 135, and despite my very small frame I'm still pretty scrawny. I could go up to 160 easily and still be a stick. I think you're doing just fine; us tall folks can often carry weight more easily than smaller ladies.

Moral: most objective standards are BS.
I am 6 foot tall with an 8 1/2" wrist.  There is no way that the ideals will work for me.  I was a size 6 at 168, so I don't ever want to go lower than that!
Im 6' tall and have a largeish frame and weight 220. I admit Im over weight, but I am not obese as the BMI charts suggest. I used to weigh 155 for a short time and during a bought of depression, and I was sick looking. I had comments all the time that I needed to eat something, yet all these charts and calculators say 155 is the middle of healthy for my height. At that weight I wore a size 10. In fact, at 170lbs I wore a 10. I lost almost 20 lbs and still couldnt get the buttons on an 8 to even touch. And that was with my hip bones sticking.

Ive always had wide hips and big thighs and a large chest, and I cant remember wearing any other size shirt besides a large or bigger.

And I hate looking for pants. I found a tag at a dept store explaining their sizes and it said something to the effect of

Petite- for petite women 4'8-5'2
Regluar- for most women 5'3-5'6
Tall- for taller women 5'7-5'10

I think thats how a lot of companies see it. You're right. To them a 6' or over woman doesnt exist.

I'm 5'11" and I'm aiming for about 160 as goal weight.  My mother is 155 and she is just skin and bones.  I try not to hug her too tight she feels that frail.  I couldn't imagine her going down to the 130's.  There would be nothing left!

I'm at 220 now but I don't look it.  Most ppl don't believe I've got 60 more pounds to lose.
Just out of curiosity...do yo uguys have a hard time finding shoes?
I hate wearing heels because, well, I have enough of a crick in my neck looking down at my co-workers all day in flats, and because they make my pertetually too-short pants look shorter.

Any time I find shoes in my size (anywhere from a 9 to an 11) they are almost always heels of some kind unless they are sneakers. It gets extremely frustrating so that I tend to just have one or two pairs of shoes for work, and wear them for several years until they are sheads.

I wear my berks, keds and a pair of running shoes.  When I worked I wore nice flat sandals in the summer and had a couple pairs of basic black flats.  They are ultra hard to find now though.  I do wear my 3inch heeled black boots though!  For some reason I love high boots and don't really care that I end up towering over ppl even more than normal.  I've got it easier than my mom and sister though so I can't complain.  My mom wears sz 11 and is required to wear high heeled shoes every day and my sister is upwards of a sz 13(she's 6'5" at 18) but she rarely wears shoes unless it's mandatory and then mostly flip flop styles.
I hate shopping for pants mostly.  All my jeans are from the mens department.  I guess only men grow to 6ft!
I don't mind the shoe thing so much -- I actually like wearing heels. Though Cole Haan makes some really beautiful, professional (and, unfortunately, expensive) women's shoes in a range of sizes; they're my go-to for flats. They even have a line of dress shoes with invisible Nike Air technology, so they're really comfortable.

I thought of an illustration of the silliness of height/weight charts and how they don't serve tall women well: some years ago I had a roommate who was 6'2". She was a runway model. She worked for Givenchy, Calvin Klein, Galliano, Thierry Mugler, you name it. Her weight? 170. And she was not plus-size. Feh.
I get my pants mostly from Lane bryant. Their regular length is a little too short, but their talls are too long. I was giddy the first time I bought some and was able to pull out my sewing machine and hem them up.

Im actually nervous about losing weight partially because I might not be able to fit in to their jeans any more. ;)

I tend to wear skirts very often because now the style seems to be a very comfortable length fror me, below the knee, and because it eliminates the pants-too-short problem:)

I'm six feet tall and if I weighed 130lbs, I'd be dead.  I weigh around 220 my ribs and hips are boney.  i could still lose some weight for sure, but 130 or even 160 is way too skinny for me.  i'm thinking around 180 to 175 is just about a little as i can go without killing myself.

i don't wear high heels.  i feel freakishly tall a lot of the time anyway, no need to make it worse.
Thanks for this!  As I said, I weighed 130 in high school, but I was literally anorexic at the time!  And weight charts (based on my wrist measurement) say that THAT is my ideal weight?  I don't think they know that 6 foot tall women exist!  And if we weighed 130, we'd be dead!

I am aiming for 165 - when I weighed that (after anorexia), I was a size 6/8.  That's fine with me.

I just wanted to vent since I looked at the weight charts and think that for a small frame 6 footer, 130 is WAY too small!  No way I'll do that again.

Thanks for all of your posts - I apprieciate it!
This thread is seriously making me feel sooo much better!

thank you all soo much!
Hooray for logical tall women!!  I have to admit, I thought maybe I was the only one who thought that 145 was WAY too skinny!

I'm 5'11 and right now 240ish.  So yeah, I'm overweight, but I bet most people wouldn't guess by how much.  My husband was actually shocked when I told him how much I weigh.  I'm headed for 165, but honestly, if I'm happy before then, I'll stop.

As for clothes, if you have long legs, I found the coolest online catalog called Long Elegant Legs.  All the pants are 36" inseam or longer!!  I am loving it.  Also, for work pants, JCPenney carried some in ultra talls.  They aren't hemmed, and I honestly don't  mind doing the work.  I've always been tall, and I guess I got over the heels thing in high school.  I like heels and I'm wearing them.  However, I severely broke my leg a couple years ago, so I don't wear them often...LOL!!

i just got a catalog from l.l.bean and they now have jeans in medium tall with 32" inseam and tall with 34" inseam. i haven't ordered any yet, but the 32" will be perfect for me. i usually find my favorite clothes at "tall girl," a shop in canada and the midwest, but have to cut off a couple inches because most of their pants are 34" inseam. both of these companies have an on-line catalog. i'm "only" 5'10, but also have a hard time finding clothes that fit. used to be the only way to get them was to sew my own. shoes, well, that's another matter. but sas (san antonio shoes) makes the most comfortable, i think, in the widest range of sizes, but they're def not into high fashion, just comfort. it's really hard to find dressy styles. esp in 10 1/2 AA.
I'm 5'11" and a very competitve mountain biker.  I refuse to go below 142 because it would affect my performance in races.  So yeah, I don't think you need to worry about getting down in the 130 range.

Like everyone else says, those charts get very skewed as you move from the center of the height range.  Sounds like you are about the right weight right now.  :)
Victoriassecret.com has pants in a 36 inch inseam.  Khakis, jeans, black pants, pinstripes.  I buy all of my pants from them.  They only go up to a 14 or 16 (I think), but it is worth taking a look.  I like the Christie fit dress pants, the VCut flare jeans, and the boyfriend bootcut jeans.  Take a look there if you're having trouble. (they run a bit big, in my experience)

Thanks for all of the posts - they are making me feel better about my weight!

Hi tall folks!  Out of curiosity - how many calories can you eat and maintain (or at least not gain a whole lot)?  I come up to about your bellybutton and I put food away, despite my age and lack of musculature and diminutive stature; it's making me nervous actually and that's why I'm asking.  Thanks in advance! Nancy "the tapeworm is my friend"
I myself am not that tall. But, Tyra Banks is. : ) She is around 5'10"/5'11", and she weighs 161. She looks perfectly fine to me, but when she was modeling, she weighed 120-130 pounds. I've seen pictures of her from then, and it is scary! She looks incredibly thin, and anorexic-like. I would say that with your heights, 160 would be perfect.

Cashews are delicious, but they're pretty calorie and fat dense. So when I want cashew chicken, I keep an eagle eye on the amount of nuts, and I keep the rest of the ingredients nice and light. Works every time.
