Well I have seen other posts about this so I wanted to share my experience.  When I was a healthy trim girl I ate pretty much like I am eating now but, counted fat grams (still do).  I consumed 10 grams of fat a day, had breaksast lunch dinner and as many snacks as I felt hungry for.  My weight was a SOILID 110 lbs (I'm just shy of 5 ft)  My weight NEVER fluctuates like other women and it never went up or down.  Now that I am getting back on track and using this site I have gone back to my old fit eating habits.  Most days I log my food and drinks and find I am consuming between 800-900 calories a day (never under 820).  I am never hungry, tired or have "fog brain".  I just don't think I need 1200 calories.   If I did I think that the years where my weight was a solid 110 lbs on this same diet I would have over time been loosing weight.  I personally believe that there are "averages" for the "average person".  I think there are a smaller percentage of people who may need a bit less than the 1200 and a small percentage who need a bit more.  Anyone else agree or disagree?

If it works for you, fabulous. I agree. You are the only one who really knows if you are healthy or not!

Edit: Just to add, I would not come here for assurance of a plan like your's. Not to say its good or bad, but the most CC members are not believer's in this sort of thing...

Hey! I have a personal dietitian and this is what she told me (it makes things easier to understand)..a 5'2" 19 year old female weighing 100 pounds (which is WAY too small anyways but this is the example given)... needs 1,200 calories to just sit around all day and do nothing. This is how it's broken down (scientifically)

-The heart needs 12% of the calories (144 cals)
-The kidney needs 12% of the calories (144 cals)
-The Liver needs 23% of the calories (276 cals)
-The brain needs 23% of the calories (276 cals)
-The skeletal muscle needs 30% of the calories (360 cals)

thats based on a 1,200 calories diet for a 19 year old 5'2", 100 pound woman. Obviously its going to vary based on age, weight, sex... but i think that's really interesting! That's straight from my dietitian (a doctor)

If you weigh more than that (or get up and walk around a little, not to mention working out), you MUST eat more than that or your body will start digesting its organs to live.  You will destroy your metabolism (hey, guess what? that will make you FAT eventually, if it doesn't kill you first) and damage your organs.

For MOST of you, you aren't 5'1" and you aren't 100 lbs. Thus, you need MORE THAN 1200 calories a day, just to LIVE, forget any sort of activities.

Also, please note, men, you need MORE than 1200 calories because you've been blessed with more muscle tissue than your female calories.  Typically, the FDA says you need about 500 calories more than your female counterparts.
If a doctor and dietician will endorse what you are doing and give you a clean bill of health, then cool.  Enjoy.  You are one of the few who are an exception to the rule.

However, be careful about what you post on forums.  Not saying you are, but you should not be encouraging people to eat so little calories, as they are probably not the norm.  Many people (teens mostly) read this forum looking to validate why they can eat so little calories to lose weight.  I would hate for someone who is an exception to the rule (if you are healthy and all) to encourage them.

Is it possible?  I think it might be.  But its an exception to the general rule. 

I "buy into" the 1200 calorie thing because it works for the VAST majority of people.  And people who think it can't work for them and they are ok to eat less need to have that medically aggreed to

hkellick- that's really interesting.  I've never heard that before but, what I still don't understand is how come I ate 800-900 calories a day (most days) for about 7 years and stayed at exactly 110 lbs?  If my body was so desperate for more calories that it was eating organs why did I not loose any more weight?  (I'm not trying to be argumentative I just don't quite get it)  :)

bigtwinky-  I agree with you.   That was why I said a SMALL percetage who need less and a SMALL percentage who need more.

From my experience, you will keep losing for a while, but you are going to hit a wall. Right now you have lots of fat and muscle on your body for you to draw energy. As you go on your body will suck that up and you will lose weight steady. But as you body has used up more and more of your fat and muscle it will also fight hard to hold on to what it thinks your minimum fat % should be and you will stop losing.

I'm not saying that will be tomorrow or next month, it may even be 5, 10 or 15 pounds from your goal but you will stop losing.

I have done that 4 times now. I tend to eat less then I should and I have hit hard walls where I can't lose. I got past them but eating more. Now that I am almost at goal I think I could have made it here sooner by eating more for the past 10 months. I know for sure I would have more upper body muscle if I had eaten more.

Now whether you are hurting yourself, I'm not a doctor, so I can't say but I wonder if I didn't lose more then muscle and fat.
i ditto what they are saying..be prepared to be flamed to hell.
If you really wish to know how that was possible, I think a dietitian or nutritionalist can help you more with it. 
I don't understand. Why would people WANT to eat so little?

I'm 5'3, 107ish, and usually eat anywhere between 1500-2000cals. When I'm training for a marathon, it's anywhere between 2000-2500. I LIKE being able to eat that much. I have loads of energy, sleep well, get lots of work done, and am happy most of the time, not very moody, pretty emotionally stable, etc. 

What's the point of trying to eat so freaking little? Wouldn't it be better to be more active and eat more? Both for your mood and overall bodily health and strength?

if it works for you thats good.. I am following the Mayo Clinic Healthy Weight for Everybody.. I am in a 12 week class then after the class is over I am going to see the nutritionist for follow up and accountablity until I lose everything roughly 80 pounds in all.. I  am 4 ft 11.. I have a large bone structure.. ( you can check your bone size by taking your thumb and middle finger and placing it around your opposite wrist.. if your fingers overlap.. you are small boned, if they touch you have a medium frame.. and if they do not touch you large framed).. I would look horrible under 120.. my Dr. just wants me under 145.. my goal is 132 .. but I would be happy at 142.. No one I have spoken with in the medical field reccomends eating under 1,000 calories a day.. my program is based on 1200. However if you are in good shape and the doctor sees you as healthy doing a program like that.. then good luck...
Well some people can't eat 2000 to 2500 cals a day because they don't run marathons no offense phimegaphi but maybe that works for you but not for everyone. If I ate that many cals I would def. gain and yeah I could work out for 3 hours a day to burn it off but I don't want to, I am happy eating 1200 to 1500 cals and working out for 1.5 hours a day 4 days a week. Not everyone runs marathons and has a whole day to spend at the gym. It's really about what works for you.  So if eating 800 to 900 cals works for someone and they are healthy according to their Dr. then why not. Unless ltlmsmfft Dr is participating in this chat then all this is just peoples oppinions and not facts.

I'm short. Even when I'm at maintenance, I'm only going to be eating 1400 day at my usual activity level. I don't want to eat 1400 calories. That's like a single trip to Starbucks. I want to MORE, so I exercise.

Boy... I don't get the "eat less" desire. I love food. I'd live off whipped cream and butter if I hadn't previously discovered the side effects of that approach.

believe it or not, some people actually see 'eating' as a chore. I know a little boy who since he was a baby just not really fond of eating. Try feeding him food is like feeding him poison. Oh he will eat, but only when he is hungry ... The brother tho is total opposite.
I think as long as you eat healthy, does it matter how much calories you consume....is this right? Like all the weight watchers meals, desserts etc - although they are low in fat/calories, they are not as good for you as, say a home made healthy meal which is more calories? What really confused me, the other day i was in tesco looking for something for lunch - I saw a chicken salad and the calories where shocking - really high about 350, compared to a packet of crisps at about 110? Surely the salad is healthier? Oh and about the 'bone size test', how much should your fingers overlap to be small - my middle finger touches part of my thunb nail - is this small or medium framed? K xx
smile, that chicken salad was probably loaded with more mayonnaise than is good for you, although 350 calories for a meal is not too much, and the chicken would provide protein.  While the packet of crisps was lower in calories, it's very high in fat and has no other nutritional value.  What you need to look for is food that is not prepared or mixed with anything.  Plain green salads with the dressing on the side is a good example.  Get things that are as close to the natural state as possible.

No, that's not correct.  You gain weight when you eat more calories than you use. The source of the calories simply doesn't matter. Whether it comes from cauliflower or chocolate, a calorie is a calorie is a calorie.

Also, listen to claire... to eat healthy, you need to start looking beyond just the packaging and understand what ingredients are good for you and which are bad.
Carbs are good for you, but extra sugar may not be, depending on how sensitive you are to sugar. Try to get your carbs from fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains. About 50% of your calories should be from carbs.
Fat is also good for you, but really only unsaturated fats, which you can get from mainly vegetable products (olive oil, walnuts, etc.) Saturated fats and unsaturated fats are bad for you. You get these MAINLY from animal sources (in milk, eggs, meat, etc.), but also certain oils like palm oil. Trans fat is even worse, and is in ALOT of products from peanut butter to margarine. Try to avoid trans fats.

Also, avoid High Fructose Corn Syrup. It tricks your body into NOT feeling full and you eat more.  Unfortunately, HFCS is all over the place in all SORTS of products.

Hey everyone...

I'm 25yrs old and just started the calorie counting last Monday...I'm 5'6" and I have lost a bit more then 3pds based on the 1200 calories plan...I'm jazzed about it but it seems a bit rapid...I've also been working out 30-45mins daily...jogging...strength training...etc...while burning a good 300+ calories...besides that I have a desk job and sit most of the day...

With that being said I'm wondering if I'm being too aggressive and should eat more.  I'm worried I'll hit that wall that's been discussed or that my body isn't getting what it needs...I'm a vegetarian and I've been eating mostly whole foods...carbs take up at least 55-60% of my calories...

Any thoughts?  Am I doing it right?

Well, I eat protein, vegetables, fruits, grains, nuts and never under 1250 (sometimes more) per day.  I eat every 2-1/2 hours. 

Since July (6 weeks off for holidays, I have lost 56 lbs.  I do not exercise except for walking. 

If I eat less I feel that my brain doesn't function as fast and my reactions are slower, don't feel that energetic.  If that happens I eat a big meal and drink a lot of water. 

I have a thorough checkup every 2 months, including blood tests.

So far so good, would rather go with the accepted norms than not and find out later that I should have.  In this game it is very difficult to go back and fix damaged organs or metabolism.
My doctor told me that I am where I am because of the mainutrition that I forced myself to live by as a teen.  Sure, I was thin as a teen, but then my body started shutting down.  My thyroid, and then I lost my gall bladder.

The dr. told me that my fear of eating salt, or butter or any kind of fat actually made my gall bladder fail because it needed the iodine.

He also told me that becasue I ate so little, that eventually my body went into starvation mode and started storing everything I ate as fat.  So, I am actually working on eating, and eating healthy, so that my body knows I am not starving and that I choose better choices.
