Giving up pop cold turkey!

Quote  |  Reply

Giving up pop a few days early for Lent.  This is day #2.  My body doesn't like me right now but I gotta make changes to get anywhere.

There should be rehab for this ;)

Good luck Tracy....it can be done.  I was a pop addict big time.  I am not sure, but, I did get a headache from not having the caffeine.  You may get this.  I would just take a sip of diet coke....could be all in my head too.  I drink ice tea now with stevia.  It quinches my thirst.

Good luck to you!

Get past day 3 and you will be just fine.. :)  I went from 3 mountain dews and 2 energy drinks a day to nothing but water and tea (unsweetened or green). I find that drinking tea helps with the caffeine withdraw but doesn't have the calories of chocolate. I consider this similar to nicotine patches that slowly wein you off caffeine. Switching to green or unsweeten tea is just a smaller low calorie dose of caffeine. :)

If you choose to go cold turkey still, I will promise you will be fine by day 3 or 4.  It's like any drug addiction including tobacco. It's hard to break it but once you do you are so glad you did.

You can try to drink bubbly water with some lemon juice. It helps with the craving for that soda taste.

I've done this before years ago and it's awful just like I remember.  I actually only drink one pop a day during the week but several on the weekend.  Alot of water being drank right now.  :)

lyntracy: I'm giving up soda for lent too. I've always gotten close to it such as giving up sugared sodas or caffeine, but this year I'm going all the way and giving up all soda and carbonated drinks. I guess we'll see how it goes.

Fingers crossed...by Easter we'll both be done with soda for good!Smile

I gave up soda years ago.

Now, it always tastes a bit oversweetened to me.  I have a soda probably once every two months.  It gives me hope that I'll be able to do the same thing with other foods, like processed sugar.

Good luck! I've given on soda for almost five months now; it got easier after the first few weeks. Its also easier if at first you gradually cut back. Like, before I drank a glass or two a day. Then eventually I only drank it once or twice a week... Then never! It really does make you feel better, too. And some say it helps with weight loss but I didn't really notice that (that might only apply to those who drink liters of it every day - I only had about 8 - 16 oz.) ANYWAYS good luck, again. (:

I've given up soda too! Although I had no idea when lent started so this is day 3 for me. I find I dont even think about it until i'm in the store and all the different drinks are lined up in front of me, I've been drinking water with crystal light but i'm a bit bored of it now, I'll have to get a few more flavours. Honestly it is a bit difficult, I was having caffine withdrawals today so I got one of those caffene energy shots (non carbonated...does that count as soda?) but it just made me feel light-headed! Lol

I guess its good to know all the crap they put in soda isnt going into my body now. I know if I make it all the way through lent, I'll be good for life! (although I have to admit, I will still be having coke with my southern comfort when lent is over! Tongue out)

Good luck!

You can do it!  I used to drink 5-8 cans/bottles of reg Coke everyday.  I quit cold turkey in May 2011 and only drink water or unsweetened tea.  I do not miss pop at all.  I find when I drink diet Coke, I can really taste the chemicals in it.

This is day #4 with no pop.  Yesterday I felt good so I should be on the right track :)  Tomorrow and the rest of the weekend will be tough cuz I only work 4 days and being in the house alot I tend to drink it outta bordem I think.

Good luck to anyone and everyone giving up pop!

Congrats!  I gave up my beloved Diet Coke on Jan. 1!  I had at least a can every day, and after the first few days, it was surprising how quickly it got easier.  The biggest plus is that I drink SO much more water!  Usually with some flavour added, but even the plain stuff works.  Keep up the great work!

Congrats on giving up soda. I drank at least  2 liter bottle every day! It's been 8 months and I don't miss it at all. I drink lots of water with lemon  and green tea. Keep up the good work!

Good luck. I gave up Mountain Dew right around Thanksgiving, thanks to a chemistry class, and actualling reading the ingredients, and being curious as to what brominated vegetable oil is/does. Maybe it really is harmless, but it gave me the kick in the butt I needed to quit. (so nobody correct me if I'm wrong!) sadly though, I switched to cream soda. Have stopped drinking that now for a week or so.

Ok, Y'all have talked me into it again, I am going to use up the diet soda in my frig now and then get unsweetened tea but sweeten it with the no cal sweetener, It is easier to bring home from the store as well as it gets rid of the pop part, Frankly I think I am an addict to the bubbles more than the taste as I can drink anything that has the bubbles in it, But you are all giving me hope so I am going to go cold turkey slowly and finish the 24 pack in the frig of diet sams cola :) Foot in mouth

Hang in there - it's does get easier! Laughing

Congarts on giving up soda! I have not given up soda completely, every once in a while I will splurge but definately not like I used to. I actually drink lots of water. I really don't like drinking water which is why I used to drink so much soda but now I drink water all the time. I do have a secret though lol I use MIO. I couldn't drink as much water without it. If the carbonation is what you like try the carbonated water with some MIO see if that will take the edge off :)

I'd try my best to stay away from the no cal sweetners. They are worse for you than sugar is. At least from all of the research I have seen.

I have given up soda over two years ago and lost over 40 pounds. I was dieting here and there but not serious. Seems like if I say diet I lose focus and think I am going to get deprived. So I eat what I want in moderation.

I don't get bloated or get really hot in the summer like I used to. So many carbs in soda. Even diet pop will make you feel bloated.  I pop in here every so often to make sure my calories are in range. Sometimes I dont eat enough. I only eat one meal a day and its dinner.. I know its bad but never get hungry during the day.  Good job on quitting. It took about 3 weeks before I felt completely different. It wasnt really to hard to do. The first two days or so.. I have been drinking soda for over 30 years as my main drink and had at least 3-5 12 ounce bottles, cans a day.

Now I drink Vitamin water 0

Congratulations! I gave up pop as my new year's resolution. I was drinking 32oz or more a day. It is hard to do but it can be done! I got headaches with it. Try eating apples. They have more caffeine than a cup of coffee and its all natural. It helped. And lots of water. Keeping hydrated helps with the headaches as well. I recently tried a mountain dew and could only handle about 2 sips. It was too sweet so down the drain it went.

Hey Lyntracy,

I marked out 40 little lines on my white board and have erased two as of today.  I too have given up diet coke and while I've done it before, I've read too much recently about your body keeping weight on due to the chemicals it has to get rid of.  As such, I've gone cold turkey.  Was tempted today, but got my frizzante sparkling water to cover up and so far so good.  Keep it up!
