Green Tea! And my weight loss.

Quote  |  Reply

Q1: Has anyone else seen the benefits from Green tea?
Q2: Is there any other foods/drinks anyone swears helps them?

Green Tea:
I swear by this stuff. In February I was fed up with my weight, my lack of energy, and the overall way I felt about myself. I'm going to go out on a limb here and admit how much I weighed. I'm 19, 20 in August, 5'4", and in February I weighed in at my heaviest.... 173 lbs!!!! It was shocking, to say the least. I am not at all surprised that I got to that point because I was eating JUNK all the time, not exercising, and was constantly hidden in "my cave" (my apartment) studying all the time. Needless to say I got straight A's for the semester but I never made time for MYSELF and my HEALTH.

BUT.... I finally did something about it. I have now lost 22.5 lbs since February and I already feel so much better about myself and have so much more energy. My goal is to get down to 130 and from there I will see how I feel/look.

The point is, when I started my exercise/eating healthier "program" I drank a cup of green tea every morning. And I'm not talking about the sugary crap they sell. I'm talking about the tea bags with NO caffeine and I don't add sugar.

They say that green tea helps your metabolism and I couldn't agree more. I definitely think it has helped me lose those 22.5 lbs! So if you're not drinking green tea, I suggest you try it. You may not enjoy the taste (don't add sugar) but I swear it works!

I have also read:

Here are just a few medical conditions in which drinking green tea is reputed to be helpful:

  • cancer
  • rheumatoid arthritis
  • high cholesterol levels
  • cariovascular disease
  • infection
  • impaired immune function

Anyway, I will stop rambling. But I hope everyone will atleast try it because I have only read great things about it.

Good luck to everyone! Keep up the great work and Happy Monday!!! :-)

I started out counting calories, walking, etc.  In the first 2 months I lost approximately 14lbs each month.  At the start of month 3 I thought "I keep hearing so much about this green tea, I'm gonna give it a whirl."  So I bought green tea  (in bottles, but the diet kind with no sugar although it does have artificial sweetener in it) and some weight smart vitamins with the green tea extract.  That month I lost 22 lbs..which was more than a 50% increase from the 2 previous months!  I swear by the stuff now and drink 1 bottle every day and still use the same vitamins.   As of right now I'm down a total of 68.5 lbs.
|'ll definately try that. |'ve been drinking black coffee lately in the morning, and | think green tea would be a much better change. =]
I recently read on the news that you would have to drink literally buckets for green tea to have the weight loss effect. It has so many other good aspects to it though! Diet + Exercise = Success You simply don't need the other "diet" loopholes!
Motivateme320: Great! I'm glad you have seen the benefits as well :-)

BTW congrats on all of your weight loss, that's great!

I have read the same articles about how much green tea you have to drink, but I have to say that just from personal experience (3 cups of green tea a day with meals), I saw a huge jump in weight loss from my pre-green tea days!  But I have a cautionary tale.  A friend of mine is a nurse, and she told me that taking green tea supplements as well as drinking loads of green tea can actually have adverse effects on your organs.  So stick with the old adage, everything in moderation, and you'll be fine!  Also, those of you who don't like the taste, there are several great blends available.  My personal fav is Chamomile Green tea.
I too drink a bunch of it, it's best after a meal to assist with digestion!

Ok - I LOVE green tea - not only does it apparently speed up weight loss but it is good for detox and clearing up skin!!  I drink around 2 cups a day.

Also - another wonderful drink i HIGHLY recommend is Hot
Water with Lemon (juice of about one whole lemon) first thing in the morning.  It helps cleans your system from the day before and it gives your motabilsim a good boost first thing - it feels great!!  Nutritionist highly recommend doing this one thing if nothing else - so i read of course!!  I have a hot water with lemon first thing and then a green ginger (ginger is great for digestion) tea around half hour later then have breakfast another half hour later of lots of fruit!!

Let me know if you do drink hot water with lemon....
I drink Lipton green tea...( colder and sweeter..) does it give +ve effect?

Sorry for posting this, but ..Just so you know..

I worked at a coffee shop for about 6 months a few years ago and would literally take shots of espresso a few times throughout the day and drink gallons of coffee, simply because it was there and I had unlimited access to it. So after I stopped working there I swore off coffee altogether and started drinking green tea. While my body does feel sooo much better and I give it credit for not really ever getting a cold, I haven't seen much/any weight loss effects. And when I switched from coffee to tea I was drinking like 10 cups of green tea a day just to get rid of my nagging caffeine headaches.... but I'm glad it has worked for some of you. I recently gave up green tea too because I cut out caffeine altogether, but I'm thinking I might go back to it using the caffeine-free version and see if that helps any.
I certainly don't reccommend drinking insane amounts of green tea. I only drink 1 cup a day in the morning. I just swear it works!! :-)
A caffeine-free version exists?  I thought all tea, true TEA, had caffeine.  Or are they 'extracting' it like they do with coffee and other teas?
wow, I had sort of forgotten about green tea, and just put it in the back of my mind but knew it was good for you.  I think I will have a cup each day too, every little bit helps, thanks for the healthy reminder!
I just recently bought some "real" green tea for pennies in Chinatown (you know just like the kind you get in sushi restaurants) and now my boyfriend and I are ADDICTED. We share a pot at least once a day. It's so good, so soothing and perfect for the soul.

The only thing that concerns me is the caffeine in it ... does anyone know how caffeinated it is???
I got hooked on grean tea during 2 weeks in japan, drink it cold over ice.  :o)  If you can't pallet the strong after taste of green tea buy white tea.
Sarah, are you putting sweetener in the lemon water?  Are you drinking 8 oz, or what?
responding to nycgirl- 1 bag of green tea has 30mg caffene, compared to 90mg in a cup of coffee.
So i take it it doesn't matter what kind of green or white tea it is?  One of my co-workers has been drinking the crystal light green tea singles in her water bottle and she has definately been dropping the weight faster than me (we've both been doing slimfast).  Also, can you add sweetener to the hot tea or does that mess with the effect?
I don't know about the health effects of green tea. I told my doctor about my green tea supplements I was taking and she said I should just be cautious of overly high blood pressure from it.

I would like to say though that Bigelow makes a green Mint tea that makes an excellent iced tea for the summer. It has some of it's own natural sweetness too so you may not feel you even need sweetener.
E1ys3 -- what brand of tea are you using?  I'd like to try this.  Thanks.
