Help with the last five pounds please !!!

Quote  |  Reply

I have lost 100 pounds since August 2010 which I am very proud of but my goal is five more pounds and I seem to be stuck !!  I am logging my food and being very careful about my food choices but I seem to crave things at night and don't know how to break that.  I usually do not have a problem during the day because I stay very active with three children but at night when things calm down the cravings begin.  My current weight is 130 lbs and my goal is 125 lbs, I am 5' 6".  Any advice on how to stop this?  Any and all suggestions much appreciated Smile

You lost those 100 lbs pretty quickly, and are currently at a perfectly slim weight for your height. Have you considered taking a break to let your body "reset"?

If I was in your position, I would eat at maintenance for a month or two, do some strength training and interval training (which will give you a metabolic boost), and then cut my calories by 300 or so to take those last 5 lbs off slowly.

Thank you for responding... I have been on maintenance for a few weeks just keeping within my range of intake and exercise.  Sometimes it seems to be water weight (that time of the month, especially the week before) but the cravings are making me feel more like a failure at times.  I have not lost my will power at all but I question when I feel the need to snack at night if I am really hungry or just not as active as daytime.  Any suggestions for the night time snacking in the most healthy way possible?  Thanks again :)

When I crave something at night, especially after completing my food log for the day, I grab a dill pickle spear. The crunch, dill and slightly salty flavor satisfies many aspects of the craving and it's only 5 calories per spear.

Please don't feel like a failure just because of your cravings! There are numerous possible reasons for them - you may be genuinely hungry if you aren't eating enough, your diet might be deficient in some nutrient or another, or you may just be bored. Do you mind if I ask how much you are eating and how active you are?

It's also possible that your body is still adjusting to your new weight - there are complex hormonal feedback mechanisms that regulate things like fat storage and hunger, and they don't necessarily distinguish between good weight loss (like a nutritious diet to get down to a healthy weight) and bad weight loss (food shortages).

If you do feel the need to eat at night, you can always choose sometime low calorie. Alternately, you can adjust your meal plan so that you eat the bulk of your calories later in the day. I've been eating at least 50% of my food after 6 pm, just because that's when I'm the hungriest.

My CC intake for the day is 1,276 and I average that right now.  I have a hard time eating my bulk during the day because that is when I am way more active (three children at home for the summer keeps me on my toes) and I do sit down more in the evening and that seems to be when I have a craving.  I do housework all day long and usually have an errand or two to run during the day so I am pretty much moving all day long.  I swim with the kids at least three to four days a week and work out while I am in the pool to keep moving.

I agree my body could be adjusting as it is use to me eating junk and anytime of day before August of last year when I decided to get the weight off and keep it off.  I am constantly looking for healthy eating tips as my family has changed our eating habits for good and I like to give them a variety to choose from.  I think the snacks I have stocked for myself and my husband may be more harmful than good like Fiber One bars (90 calorie), Kashi bars, Low sodium pretzels and Quaker rice cakes.  They all contain sugar and salt which is what I seem to crave.  Sometimes I find that it is just a "crunching" crave, I know that sounds silly but that's what it feels like. After dinner we usually snack on fresh cut up fruit (pineapple, cantaloupe, grapes, blueberries or watermelon) and cut up veggies that we sometimes dip but not always.

Any suggestions?  Thanks so much for your time... I appreciate it soooo much !!!! Smile

^This is why you're so hungry! You're just not eating enough to sustain your activity level. When I enter your stats into the Burn Meter and set it to "moderately active" (which you are), it says you're burning around 2060 calories/day.

So, I'd suggest eating around 2000 for a couple weeks, and then cutting your intake down to 1700 or so (definitely no lower than 1500) to take off those last 5 lbs.

I totally agree that a lot of "healthy" snacks are anything but. Ultimately, I've found things like nuts, fruit, cut up veggies with dip, and hard boiled eggs to be the most satisfying snacks for me. If those don't satisfy your crunchy craving, how about kale chips?
