Does anyone else have a hard time figuring out calories in home made indian food?

not indian, but persian food yes :)
plus, any foods from restaurants that won't have info on the web - most indian, thai, chinese, japanese, mediteranean, etc. Makes it difficult.

I have a lot of trouble finding nutrition info on the food I normally eat at home as well. I try to use the recipe analyzer that CC has, but sometimes it won't recognize very recognizable food, like "curry powder" or "radish" or "turnip." It's really annoying. When this happens, I end up going to  http://www.thedailyplate.com in order to find the caloric intake of my food or an equivalent just because they seem to have a lot more data, and also share recipes that users put in. Not to undermine CC or anything :/

This is the story of my life right now, because I am actually spending about half my time in India on business. I usually just try to err on the side of caution when I estimate the calories in restaurant meals...

If you're making the food yourself, though, you should be able to calculate your calories using the recipe tool. The biggest culprits are probably going to be rice, oil or ghee, and high-fat dairy like cream or paneer.  Chickpeas and potatoes can bump up the calories too.

 i dont use much oil and hardly ever use ghee, so thats def a good thing.  we have Diwali (kinda like an indian christmas) coming up this week, so its going to be hard trying to keep away from all those sweets and fried foods!

I'm going to attempt to put some recipes together of indian foods i already make,  with calories counts...should take me a while but while probably be better for me in the long run.

 

Hey! i know what u mean about sweets and fried foods...try drink lots of water-especially in themorning.  Stay away from salt as much as possible.  Chappathis and Rotis are very healthy-stick to a maximum number of 2 with lots of curries-especially the vegetables..and if u r a non-vegetarian, have more meats than the gravy-which are usually loaded with creams/milk fat, oil, and nuts (the tastier ones)...also as someone earlier said, keep away from potatoes-that means samosas, and bajis....

Something i realized that we all can do is skimp on a meal if u know the next one is gonna be big-like have oatmeal in the morning or cereal-to compensate ur calories.  Another thing i do-is choose a few of the sweets that i LOVe and cant go without tasting (gulab jamuns and milk sweets)-and split it with my husband or my son-that way i get to taste it but i wont have the whole thing.  Lst but not least-dont gobble everything down, eat slowly, stay away from the buffet tables...focus more on socializing and assuring yourself that you look great-that will help you stay away from too much food...

I figure home made food is so much healthier then outside food anyways so i count my calories when making indian food but not to the dot.

I buy roti from the indian store which already has the calories on the pack. (1 roti 200 calories!) and then just try to stick to veggies instead of meat and no ghee! Just use Pam spray.

I sure could use a gulab jamun right now though!

yup its a good place to start :)

but thing with indian tasty food is most of it is based on cooking with lots of oil.

its hard  to get an average calorie counts because the method of cooking a same dish/curry is different  based on region/culture.

Ive been trying to count calories in the curries made at home and i still cant get my head around the portion sizes and the total calories per portion o_O.

I'm Indian and I always have this issue. I usually take the ingredients and estimate the calories based on that. If there's a recipe that I make a lot, I'll note down the calories for that recipe and just refer to that each time. Also, http://allrecipes.com/ will generate nutritional info for recipes. You might try entering stuff on there.

 whaaaaaat??? 200 kcal? madam,a roti has 60-80 kcal!!

mm....yeah i do have problems...but i tried a simple thing!!... not eating the veggies mum cooks...it wld sure have a lot of oil and salt. i make my ow quota of the day, with minimal oil, mostly boiled.

we indians have like 2-3 subjis, including a dal and maybe curd or lassi! and yeah our food had a lootttttttttttt of salt. every cooked dish has salt! so lessen that and u'll look slimmer!

but try eating fruits and vegetables raw... fill urself up with them...because that over heating, boiling and cooking ruins the vegetables nutrient value...

Dal actually has more calories than most curries.

tomatoes are best raw vegetables to eat.

deep fried curries have most calories even in the smallest portions.

roti without oil has 60-80 calories considering the average size of the roti to be of 6-7 inches in diameter.

similar to a single slice of bread.

Indian food tastes fantastic!

If the dish is home made, it is so easy to enter the recipe into the recipe analyzer here on CC.. you'll get all your nutrient info instantly and you can adjust the portion size (or recipe) until you get an acceptable calorie count per portion.

I have a lentil curry that tastes great and is not bad on calories if you keep the portions sensible.

If it's something not home made, then I look for a similar sounding/ looking recipe online and enter that into the analyzer... Everything is an estimate anyhow but this will at least give you a rough idea.

As to portion sizes: be conservative, since the ghee/ butter/ salt content of Indian meals is usually high. Make the rice whole grain and the portion of Naan bread small.

Agree with the long cooking decimating the nutrients in the veggies, so add a salad or lightly steamed veggies as a side or first course.

Check this website.  It will give you calorie calculation to some of the foods.  Also you can choose how many servings you want to make out of a cup/half cup etc.

Usually what I do is make the curry/dal or anything else enter the data into that website and then enter that nutritional values in to CC and save that to my tagged items for future use.
