Both are great exercise, but overall running burns more calories per mile, unless your walking super super fast.  An easy way to calculate it is:

running: .75 X (wt lbs) and walking is .53 x (wt in lbs) will give your roughly the calories burned per mile. (note this is at speed up to 5.0...if you can somehow manage to walk on the treadmill at speeds faster then 5.0 then walking starts to burn more, but I find that kind of impossible)

thanks sealion311 and jeff1968!..  great information!...Laughing

you can walk at 5mph??

that's a really fast paced walk... 5mph is like a very light jog for me, but I can't walk that fast, I usually walk at a 3.8-4.2mph pace

I think jogging/running at 5mph would be easier and there wouldn't be as high of a risk of injury... walking at 5mph and you are likely to hurt yourself unless you are really tall and have long strides

haha 5mph is like race-walking...its an actual event in Track....its actually quite painful on the legs .....more than running it hurts the calves......Haha!

It also funny to watch cuz when we have a meet and were watching the walkers they all start and there is a whole group of people powerwalking which is actually a funny sight!!Tongue out

I always thought they were the same, but looked it up in the cc activities and found out they were different.  For someone weighing 150 lbs,

Activity................calories/hour....calo ries/mile....calories/5 km

walking 4 mph...........340..................85........ ............266

running 6 mph...........680................113......... ...........353

biking 13 mph............544..................41....... .............128

If you look at from the standpoint of exercise, running burns the most.

On the other hand, from the standpoint of fuel economy biking is best.  Twice as efficient to take the bike than to run.

If only it weren't so dangerous....

I actually would burn MORE calories walking at a speed of 4.5mph then running/jogging at 4.5mph... but at that speed walking starts getting very painful on the shins and the risk of injury is greater

I would perfer just to up the speed if I want to run (I usually run between 6.5-7.5mph) or decrease the speed if I want to walk (3.8-4.2mph)

that area between 4.5 and 5.0 mph is a tricky one for me cause it's too fast of a walk, but yet too slow of a run

I think it has a lot to do with speed and your heart rate. I bought a Polar F7 HRM and jogging at 5mph and breaks with walking at 4pmh, I burn about 270 for 2miles.  If I jog at 4pmh and walk at 3.5mph it's much less.  The higher the heart rate the more cals from fat you burn.

I do agree with other members about jogging at 4.0 being easier than walking at 4.0.  Having that little skip during a jog really makes moving easier.
