Monday check-in.  180.8 lb.  Didn't work out at all last week, but was under the weather too so maybe those balanced out. 

spiray, on the love handles thing, I think it is a bit of both.  Yes, some people genuinely have no or virtually no love handles.  And yes, some photographs are photoshopped. 

 

Hi Spiray. There are definitely all sorts of tricks for getting perfect body shots. It is possible for some people not to have love handles though as I didn't have them when I was at my goal weight. That is another big reason I want to lose the weight! It obviously depends on your body type though. I am kind of an inverted triangle - my hips are smaller than my shoulders. Sounds like you've got a great exercise schedule there :) What date is your birthday? Mine is also in October.

Of course, when love handles get down to a certain point, you can start pretending they are obliques. Sssh - that is my plan B.

joaree, our fearless thread-starter, how are you doing? Are you trying something new? Or sticking with the tried and true?

joaree: Oooh, no love handles? Really? Wow! I wonder if mine will at least partially go away, then. I've no idea, really! And my birthday is on the 6th, in like ten days. Yours is on Hallowe'en, right?

This is super embarrassing... I was eating just fine and then I got all stress-y over my homework and ate half of a Costco-sized chocolate bar. I don't hate myself for it or anything (that won't help!), but stress eating is getting sooo old. Eating carrot sticks instead would be a step in the right direction, perhaps, but I still can't figure out how to cope with the actual underlying stress in a healthy way.

But the chocolate was good, anyway.

What's everyone up to? Well, I was feeling pretty pleased about my weigh-in this morning. Then I received my dandy new set of body fat calipers in the mail and, lo and behold, the caliper measurements agree nicely with my body composition scale. Damn. I would have preferred a healthy debate between the two.  I may have to resign from this group of people with only a "bit" left to lose . . . I don't "feel" that I have great big love handles, but I'm a numbers person, and the numbers are speaking.

Hi everyone, I have an increase to report but not too bad considering all the crap I've been eating at my parent's. It should come right back off in the next few days at least.  :)

Actually I am really excited. I thought for sure I would be back up to 130 this morning.

I hope it's going all right for everyone this week so far.  (I've got all my foods and snacks with me so hopefully I won't continue any more of my crappy eating from the long weekend.) :)

John, currently I'm going for higher fiber. Ever since I've started eating healthier I have always eaten a lot of fruit and vege and I eat 5 or 6 small portions of food a day to keep metabolism revving a day but have often skimped on cereals (breads/pastas/rice etc). Now I have found a pasta that is super high in fibre. Your average piece of bread has about 3g fibre per 100g while if you're lucky a wholemeal variety might have 6g per 100g. This pasta has 12g per 100g! I figure I only need 3 small portions of it per day to get my cereal fiber needs and I am eating it with veggies each time. For one or two of the times I eat it I will also have a serve of protein. My two other meals are fruit with yoghurt (breakfast and dessert). Let you know how it goes. On the exercise front, I am kinda putting the exercise on hold until Saturday as I have a major test to study for. Looking forward to getting back into it though. BTW did you mean you had a higher or lower body fat % than you expected? Was a little unsure.

Spiray, yes my birthday is on halloween and I think if you lose fat overall they should go away a little bit at least - no promises though lol. I read somewhere recently that you lose weight the way the layers of an onion get peeled off. Where you put weight on first is often the last place you lose it.

Health, only a small increase, and I'm sure it was worth it to catch up with your family. Bet you can soon lose it too.

 I heard that too and it's definitely how it worked for me.

Monday check-in.  181.0 lb, so up a bit from last week.  Just normal weight volatility for me. 

Following joaree's lead, I'm trying to eat more fiber.

Thanks John. Unfortunately I managed to do the fiber thing well during the weekend but come the weekend all thoughtfulness went out the window. Will try again for this week! Hope the fiber thing works well for you too :)

Hey everyone!

Forgot to weigh myself before breakfast, but afterwards I was 118 lb. Aah! I definitely didn't eat three pounds' worth of food, so I gained either way from 115 last week. But I've started this week right; I already went to the gym today and I've eaten my veggies :)

On Saturday my Mycology class went to the woods and we hunted for mushrooms, so that was really fun and worth missing the gym! And on Sunday the gym classes were cancelled so I jogged a bit (and followed it up with inordinate amounts of granola). Buuut I also ate loads of cookies (...they were chocolate-covered...) and granola.

Goal for this week: drink 2 liters of water a day.

Hi, I was thinking about stopping "being on a diet" but now I am back. I think my new goal weight is 118.  Yesterday morning I was around 127.2. But this morning I am 128.3.  Yikes, totally the wrong direction.  :D

Spiray, I love mushrooms! That sounds like loads of fun :) Good on you for going jogging instead of using the gym cancelation as an excuse not to exercise.

Health, you can do it!

I have a problem: I eat too much sugar! New rule: No more than one piece of dark chocolate per day and no other sweet treats! Lets see if by combining that with high fiber and lots of exercise I can finally lose a little weight/body fat. Game on!

I'm adding commuting by bicycle to my weight loss effort.  It is only about 9 miles and 40 minutes total per day, but that is still supposedly about 300 cal/day.  Plus what with the rain (now) and cold (coming), maybe my metabolism will step it up to keep me warm.  The problem will be if I start eating more as a result. 

The other problem is that there is a lot of gear involved.  Bike shoes, rain paints, rain jacket, gloves, helmet, shoulder bag all have to be put on and then stripped off, 2X day.  It is a bit of a pain.  Would that I'd started doing this during the summer.  I could be at goal weight now and cruising to work in a comfy car like everyone else.

I know what you mean about the new need for gear. I get to uni on a scooter motorcycle so a backpack is required, helmet, 2X gloves (1 warm pair, 1 waterproof pair), and I always wear a coat and a very thick water/windproof jacket over the top of that. If I am traveling a long distance and its pouring with rain, waterproof trousers over the top of my jeans are needed too.

In my opinion its great that you're starting now instead of summer. Often people start in summer all enthusiastically then come winter don't have the motivation anymore, go back to their old ways and put all the weight back on. This year I started exercising in the winter (its the opposite here because I'm in the southern hemisphere). I found by starting at this time that it really wasn't as bad as I imagined - the exercise warms you up and now that it has come up to spring it only getting easier and the motivation continues.

You are a positive-thinking person, that's for sure!  I will remember "its great!" when I'm freezing and drowning in the Portland winter.

Sometimes I'll ride my Vespa (1978 P125X) to work in the winter.  It is way colder than riding my bicycle, even with windscreen on the scooter.  You're going much faster than on the bicycle, and are not generating any internal heat. 

When I was small, we lived in Paris, this was the late 1970s.  I remember the streets were full of scooters, and in the winter almost every one had a big windscreen.  Some had "roofs" of black vinyl extending back from the windscreen.  I even saw scooters that were fully enclosed, with zip-up doors.  The bottoms of the doors were left unzipped so that the rider could touch the ground. 

There is a scooter that I'd love to have now, the BMW C1, with a windscreen and roof (and crash protection).  Alas, they were never inported to the US.  Well, I may get a motorcycle in the coming year.

What kind of scooter do you have?  I think you're in NZ (?) - are there Vespas there, or are they all Japanese makes? 

Yes its definitely a chilly ride in winter. My fingers go completely numb and sore from the cold. Think I will have to invest in some electric handle-bar warmers. That is quite a cool picture you painted about the scooters in Paris. Sounds like I would fit in pretty well there! Do you speak French still? I'm wanting to get a motorbike too one day but at the moment I am just a poor student so my scooter does the job fine. We do have vespas here but I have a 100cc Honda lead which I got new 4 years or so ago.

Yes, I still speak and read French. We've gone back quite often. My kids went to a French immersion school from kindergarten to middle school. We have French exchange students pretty often.

I've been looking for what are called "Hippo Hands" or "handlebar muffs" here. Check them out online. So far I've only found them to fit motorcycles, not bicycles.

A motorcycle would be cool. I've always liked older BMWs. But around here, older Honda CBs are popular, either stock or cafe racer'd. They are fairly cheap, simple, look good. How's this:
