what do i do about late night hunger????

Quote  |  Reply

ok so i just recently moved and my cat is not adjusting well.... he wakes me up every single night... which is bad enough as it is but when i wake up i realize i'm starving!!!!  back weeks ago when i slept through the night, i know i woke up quite hungry, but at least i made it through the night and went on to breakfast... but now when he wakes me up i can't fall back asleep with out eating something!!!

please help me, i'm trying to lose weight here and instaed i've been adding these late night meals that i really don't want...

usually i end up having a chunk of pound cake... last night i decided to take a couple extra minutes and make a sandwich... mini whole wheat bagel with 2 slices of soy ham and smoked cheese.... delicious actually for the middle of the night....

so my question is 1. how can i not get so hungry in the night??? even if i don't get woken up my boyfriend said i'm not normal that i wake up starving..... and 2. if i am going to wake up what's something quick and not horrible to eat and get me back to sleep???

i'll lay out my day yesterday since it was a decent eating day for me...

-mini whole wheat bagel with a slice of 2% american cheese and a veggie sausage patty

-brown rice with a mixture of beans, celery, carrots, corn, onions, diced tomatoes, cheddar cheese

 -large apple

-whole wheat  spaghetti with steamed fresh veggies in pesto sauce with a little bit of tofu

-bowl of cheddar chex mix

- i had one red bull int he morning and then water all day

ok, i know the chex mix is not good, but i'm addicted to teh stuff i loooove it. and i'm just glad i only ate a bowl of it as opposed to the whoel bag like i did a few nights ago :/  i need some sort of treat right???  (altogether that's about 16-1700 calories..... more than i need to be eating if i want to lose weight, but how do you not be hungry??!.... no i didn't exercise...)

thank you!!!

Try a snack like string cheese or an apple. The protein might help out, and I've read that you shouldn't consume carbs late at night. What I do is put that tooth whitening stuff on my teeth before I go to bed. The Crest stays on all night, so maybe if you do that and wake up, you'll still have it on your teeth and not want to have to brush it off to eat something Laughing

What you could do with is something which is both satisfying and soporific.  Try a banana - God's little lunchbox - it's packed with nutrition, and just big enough to keep the hunger-pangs at bay.  AND you don't have to feel guilty about eating it.  The high potassium values help stabilise your blood and it will help you settle down to sleep.
those are both excellent ideas.... maybe if i think of these things and have them on hand before hand i'll reach for them... my mind automatically jumps ahead to carbs when i wake up!  maybe i'll try switching my snacks/meals to have the carby stuff early and more protein later....
First of all, do yourself a favor and get rid of that pound cake!  You are making my mouth water.  tee hee!

I know what you mean about reaching for carbs, it's always what I'm digging through the cupboards looking for.  Chips, crackers, you name it!

I think the banana is a great idea.  I might even add a small cup of warm milk; it's filling, full of protein and helps lull you back to sleep.

GL!!

I do weird things like....shave my legs, clean closets, harass my husband LOL

But that's just me :)

If I am sure that I am truly hungry and not just bored, I will eat a small bowl of cereal late at night. This happens to me more than often- I think I'm pretty much an insomniac. The milk is gentle on your tummy and has a soothing effect that will put you back into sleep mode. Smile
I like snacking on anti-binge foods when I've got the munchies, it prevents me from going into binge mode.

I had the same problem. My dog would wake me up and would I feel hungry. I am trying something different, that is eating only proteins at night. I limit the caloric intake and stay away from any simple carbohydrates. Take for instance, last night I had a few egg whites and reduced fat cheese! I sleep like a baby now. Good luck!

I don't think that it's weird to wake up starving!! When I wake up in the morning I am so hungry that I feel sick to my stomach.  If my hunger wakes me up in the middle of the night I just swig a bunch of water and fall back asleep.  It's easy for me though, because I'm a very hard sleeper and I will fall back asleep in no time.

1. I think it's normal to wake up hungry. If I eat too late at night I don't feel like eating breakfast the next day.

2. Eat the cat. Problem solved Smile Unless you would consider that "horrible"

LOL thank you my coworker is wondering why i'm cracking up :P

i've thought about it trust me lol

 thanks for the ideas everyone!

I usually have an orange or a small cup of cottage cheese. I also sometimes take chewable fiber - the brand I like is intended for dieters - it's hunger controll.

Allergy Remedies
Is It Possible to Go Natural?
The side effects of allergy medications keep some people from using them. Natural remedies can be a great alternative, but some are more effective than others.
