laxatives for weight loss ?

Quote  |  Reply

Hey i was wondering if taking laxatives can result in quick weight loss ? I heard about this from my friend and she overdoses on them ( like 20 a day ) and she said that they work. She has lost some weight but idk if it was from that laxatives . I feel i need to lose some weight so i was thinking about trying this . If anyone does take them for weight loss, what brand do you recommend and when do you start to lose the weight ? :) thank you

Laxative abuse is a form of eating disorder. Please, don't do this to yourself.

And encourage your friend to get help.

There are lots of unhealthy ways to lose weight quickly, but they are bad for your health and your looks. The goal should be fat loss, and that takes time. You're not going to do that with laxatives.

Did you ever wonder why your friend has to take 20 laxatives a day?

"Laxative dependence.  This is when the colon requires larger and larger doses of laxatives to produce bowel movements.  People often become so dependent on laxatives that their body loses the ability to produce bowel movements on it's own without the aid of laxatives."

"Physicians warn against the chronic use of stimulant laxatives due to concern that chronic use causes the colonic tissues to get worn out over time and not be able to expel feces due to long term overstimulation."

"Abusing stimulant-type laxatives can lead to permanent impairment of the bowels, and the constipation problem becomes irreversible. In addition, blood can develop in stools, and excessive blood loss can result in anemia. Patients recovering from laxative abuse often have several months of problematic water retention, resulting in temporary weight gain."

TL;DR, your friend has probably worn out her colon. she CAN'T POOP ON HER OWN ANYMORE. and if she stops her 20 a day habit, MASSIVE BLOATING, and possibly IRREVERSIBLE constipation.

Gee, that sounds like a GREAT way to lose weight.

Well i thought i was recored or doing good recovering . I have been eating a lot and not weighing myself for the past 3 months . I know i have gained weight though and its like all those thought are all coming back to me now :0 aahh its crazy ! I really didnt want to starve myself anymore or purge anymore so i figured laxatives were safer . Well i was just told a few days ago i have a concussion and that means no physical activity and im starting to feel fat ! But its okay ill be fine :) i mean i still want to try it but i guess its not a good idea , my friend said its beneficial to your health :/ . I never knew it was like having an ED

You lose water weight, not real weight.

Yikes does that really happen ????? :0 i hope my friends okay !! We arent that that that close so idk if i really wanna talk about all that with her . Awkward
Yeah but if i was to take them then i wouldnt overdose . So it wouldnt be as bad but i guess then i would lose much weight . Well the sports med. doctor i go to has no idea that i had an ED , actually to tell you the truth i still dont think i had one but i know i did ! Okay scratch that last sentence idk what im saying lol ... Concussion ..,. Haha. Oh and Since you had a concussion , how do you know when its completely gone ? I need to start exercising some more .

Laxatives are not made as a means of weight loss. Their purpose is to help things move along your intestines when you're constipated. Even then, they're very hard on your system and that's when they're taken as directed. Abusing them makes things even worse.

Definitely don't do it.

Laxatives stip all the potassium out of your body along with all the good bacterial among other things. If you continue to use them on a regular basis then your body will start to become dependant on them so if you decide to stop at some point then you will begin to have problems passing food.

The reason why people think they are such a great weight loss solution is because when you take a laxative it pull the water in your into your stomach so you will get a loss of a  few pounds of water weight, big deal! That 2 pound loss might last a day or so but u are damamging your body in the process.

The quickest way to loose weight is clean eating, lots of water and exercise. That means eating small meals every few hours not starving yourself either. Your body is like a car it needs gas to run properly so if you feed it the proper nutrients then you will get the results you are looking for. It takes time and dedication it is a life style not a quick fix.

No. You NEED to recover. You don't NEED to exercise more. You WANT to exercise more.

Why aren't you being honest with your sports med doctor? I never understood why people lie to healthcare professionals.

Oh god don't just, don't. Taking a laxative, even just one, feels awful. You cramp, you bloat, and you can't do anything besides hang around the bathroom, waiting for 'it' to come.

You need to be upfront with the sports med doc. If you can't do that, then at least say 'hey, when can I resume activity', he/she should at least be able to answer that.

In the mean time, look at this set back as a step forward in your recovery; you can't exercise away your emotions, so you have to deal with the anxiety of feeling 'fat'. you can and will get through this without the aid of laxatives which are just....a whole other host of problems you don't NEED right now. Seriously, popping a laxative or two just to tide you over till you can exercise... that's just asking for MORE problems that what you are dealing with right now. Who wants more problems?

You can handle feeling 'fat' for a while, you've made it 17 years in this world tackling all sorts of difficult issues/problems/emotio ns, feeling 'fat' is something you can handle without backsliding into problematic behavior.

Repeat after me. Pills don't work.

OF ANY KIND.

Laxatives will move WATER out of your body, it doesn't reduce your fat.

Don't take green tea pills. Don't take cranberry pills. Don't take Laxative pills. The only thing that works permanently is a healthy lifestyle.

Yikes ! My friend only mentioned the benefits of this pill , she never said anything about all that . But there must be something good about if she keeps taking them and shes not stopping anytime soon she said . But i dont want my body to depend on them because then i would have to keep buying them and thats a waste of money . I was so excited to try these too !! Guess not :/
Although i did see on this one show on youtube that this girl lost 50 lbs taking these !! But im not saying i am . But also is my ED gone yet ? Yes im thinking about starving and purging and all that but im not physically doing it again yet . Im still eating a lot !! And im certainly not underweight even though i wish i was but. I just have thoughts thats it so im fine right ?

There's not anything good about them. She's delusional. And addicted.

No. If you are thinking about it, thinking leads to doing. Do not comfort yourself by 'just thinking' about starving.  If you think about it too much, you'll do it. You'll tell yourself 'just one day'. It's never just one day. If you are thinking about it, your ED is not gone.  Stop wishing you were underweight. Underweight is bad.

Hint - People sell things. They say they will work so they can sell them.

Well im trying to recover i really am ! I cant help thinking about it !! I dont want to think about it , the thoughts are just always in the back of my mind

I just wanted to chime in. As embarrassing as it is to admit, I abused laxatives as a teenager in an attempt to lose weight. I lost maybe five pounds at most, but almost ten years later, I'm still suffering from chronic constipation. It is so not even remotely worth it, and I deeply regret it. As someone who's been there, please don't do this to your body!
Ohh gosh that sounds horrible !! Yeah i dont want to go through that . Did you gain the 5 lbs back ?

Saragusa did what we're all trying to do now - take control of our health and diet. Although it was a mental struggle at first, Saragusa used Calorie Count (and a few of her own clever tricks!) to track everything she ate. As a result she's over 80 pounds lighter and a lot stronger than she was before.
