Does lemon juice really help kick up your metabolism?

Quote  |  Reply

Is it true that adding lemon juice to your water kicks up your metabolism?  I've heard it many places and would like some opinions.  Thanks!

Not sure if it does or not, but I like the taste of some lemon juice in my water instead of just plain water.

I do too, so if it does help, that would be nice.

Short anwer: no.

Nothing really "kicks up" your metabolism through consupmion, the only way to burn more calories is to increase physical activity. But I love putting lemon in my water too, it's a good way to curb cravings for fruit juice.

Well, i don't know too. But i always like to add lemon juice to my tea, sometimes water and some veeery sweet things eg cakes with too much sugar. It just takes it to another level !Smile

Or to increase your muscle mass, which will increase you BMR.  (but you can do this through exercise)

I have NEVER been  a plain water drinker unlike my husband.  But our grocery store (Meijer) has flavored water packets that you can add right to a bottle of water.  It is called Meijer Sugar Free Free & Light - there are NO numbers all the way down the box - no calories, no carbs, no sodium, no nothing. Now I can drink water as much as I want to and no worries.  It comes in Lemonade, Raspberry Ice, Strawberry, Orange, Banana and Fruit Punch (that one has 10mg sodium but I don't like this one anyways).  I am constantly buying the other three flavors :-)

I have heard that hot foods will kick up you metabolism

Any food eaten increases metabolism as your body deals with it, so does exercise. As Tibbj said, chillies increase your metabolism - up to 3 hours or so I've read. Even drinking water helps boost your metabolism. Green Tea, coffee - stuff like that. This is why eating small meals frequently is proven to be an effective way to lose weight - it keeps your metabolism boosted.

The question was does lemon juice increase metabolism? Well yes it does, because water and food will increase your metabolism. I reckon if you want to add some flavour to your water then go for it. Whether it has any further metabolism boosting capabilities seems to be a matter of debate. There is no harm in having lemons, on the contrary there are many benefits such as it being a source of vitamin C and other good stuff.

The best way to boost metabolism is of course exercise.

no. tryadding cayenne to your meals, or red pepper flakes. hot food has an effect on your metabolism. or add grapefruit to your diet, that is proven to help fat loss

Thanks for the tips everyone! =D

Lemon is a diuretic; if you drink it, you'll widdle lots and thus your water weight will go down - that may be why people believe it boosts the metabolism.

Is It Possible to Go Natural?
The side effects of allergy medications keep some people from using them. Natural remedies can be a great alternative, but some are more effective than others.
