Lesser of two evils: diet sodas or crystal light?

Quote  |  Reply

I'm SO addicted to diet sodas. I used to drink a 20oz bottle everyday but now I've switched to cans. During the summer I had one 500ml cans (small skinnier can in asia) a day... and since I'm back in the states I have one 12fl oz (normal can) a day.

I'm trying to break the chain and get rid of sodas for good because artificial sweetners can't be good for me.

I drank some sobe life water with 0 calories because it said it was naturally sweetened. However it was pricy (and probably still not healthy) so I started drinking crystal light.

I know it's also sweetened with aspartame!

I'm trying to replace my diet soda altogether with one crystal light instead a day. Sometimes I have both which is just making it worse!

I really like water but I'm a grazer... and I "graze" on liquid, if you know what I mean. I count it was my daily snack as in I drink water with my hard snacks and then I have a diet soda after a meal or something as a dessert.

I drink alot of liquid in general so...

Anyhoo, so would it be worth it to switch to crystal light from a diet soda? (Diet sunkist I LOVE) or would it be just as bad for me?

I used to drink alot of tea as well and I know I shouldn't drink diet soda or crystal light but I'm trying to ween myself off instead of going cold turkey. (And I have 3 packs of crystal light already)

so which one is worse?

crystal light for sure, it's still all chemicals though and probably not fantastic, but i don't think either is harmful

crystal light however has no acid, no caffeine[i think]

also the fact that you mix it into pure water that you know is pure water [even though coke is mostly water too it has so many more chemicals]

i really don't like the taste of crystal light though so i go for the DC

There is nothing good about artificial sweeteners. Studies have been done that show they actually cause weight gain and many other health problems. I am a believer in "cold turkey" Quit and don't look back. Choose healthy drinks, water, water with lemon or lime, tea. Many different varieties and flavors to choose from. Once you get into the water habit it is no big deal. Years ago I drank tons of pop and other junk. Gave it up, missed it for a while and have never looked back. You can do it. Will power is everything when it comes to maintaining a healthy lifestyle and weight.

Soda is very addictive.  I used to drink it all the time (2-4 cans a day).  I went cold turkey after that and switched to coffee in the morning (I had been drinking soda for my morning caffeine) and no soda the rest of the day.  I had terrible headaches and generally felt like crap a few days (stock up on the Tylenol).  I had major soda cravings.  I swear, it's like when you quit smoking!  Anyway, I didn't drink soda for a year or two then started drinking them occasionally about two years ago.

Over time I started drinking it regularly every time I went out.  I was at the point I would eat out so I could have soda.  Finally I started buying it for my house again.  That was a few months ago.  Then about a month ago I stopped drinking it again.  The withdrawal wasn't as bad because I wasn't drinking as much as I had the first time I quit.  The soda cravings were there though.  When I started wanting one really badly, I just drank some water and tried to think about something else.

The cravings didn't last more than a few days (maybe 4 or so?) this time.  I haven't drank a soda in about a month now and I don't crave them at all nor do I have any withdrawal from them any longer.  In that respect, it's not really like when you quit smoking (or at least my understanding of what it's like), once you're done with soda for a short time, it's gone and you don't really "want it" that badly.

If you drink a lot of it, try weening yourself off.  If you drink a can a day, try drinking half the can and dumping the rest out for two or three days.  After that, stop drinking it totally.  You're still going to want it but maybe it won't be as bad.  It really is possible to stop drinking the stuff.

On the whole, I'd go for the crystal light, but beware that it still has acid, especially the lemonade.  NOT good to be drinking all day long!

Try switching to lightly sweetened, watered down tea.

The OP was only drinking one a day.  If you want to drink one a day, go for it.  If you want to switch it for one crystal light go for it.

I really would not stress about 1 can of soda a day.  I gave up soda recently too, but I was drinking 36-48 oz of it a day.  I switched to hot and iced tea.  And I drink a ton of water.  If you're getting lots of water and having one soda a day, I don't think it's a big deal.

I thought I was the only person in the world who did this! The pop is my favorite part of a meal out -- I actually plan where I am going to go based on the soda available and how I know it will taste (some places mix it wrong).

OP: if you're going to have one soda a day or one crystal light a day, it's really not much of a difference between the two except for the caffeine and the bubbles. I really like bubbles so I opt for the soda for my "treat." But you might like the crystal light better. And it's not going to do a whole lot of anything to you -- the negative effects of aspartame have been shown only to affect those who consume massive quantities of it -- once a day isn't going to have much of an effect at all. There are things in our tap water where I live that are going to do you more harm.

I like having a diet soda every now and again, but learning to love water, green tea, and black coffee has been my best friend during my diet.  Aspartame and all its chemical brothers and sisters are such bad news.

My favourite way to drink water and kick that soda craving is lime Perrier--it's seriously awesome, better than it sounds.  It's bubbly and fantastic.

SoBe drinks (the zero cal ones) are sweetened with stevia, which is a plant extract.  I would think that would be the least of all evils (compared to aspartame/equal or sucralose/splenda).

Cold turkey works for some.  I went the "slowly wean yourself off" route and it worked beautifully for me.  Attempting to go cold turkey off soda and onto water had never worked before.  Replacing all my soda with diet soda then slowly replacing most of my diet sodas with Crystal Light then watering down the Crystal Light then replacing most of the watered down Crystal Lights with water was a far more effective (if longer) process for me - especially since I don't much like lemon juice or cucumber in my water.  I also still drink herbal tea, milk and the occasional orange juice (100%).

I lost weight just fine while going through this process.

I did cold turkey before and didnt drink soda for 3 months. It worked in Korea because I had so much more beverage choices (I bought alot of tea!)

Then my mom started making tea and we drank that instead of water... and then I thought it was pointless how I was buying tea when I could have it at home for free.

And thus back to those skinny pepsi cans... I was drinking around 8 oz a day (250 ml not 500 ml oops. Those were the asian bottles which is less than american bottles).

I'm back in the states and now i'm having one can a day which is around 12 oz a day. I wish American cans were smaller too.... why do americans super size everything? haha.

But i remember when I was a kid and I drank like one bottle of coke a week at church. I kinda missed that so that's why I'm trying to cut down on it. I'm thinking about doing half a can for a day but it's hard for me to stop... and the fizz is gone the next day! They don't have those tiny cans where I live for diet sunkist :/

Like I said, I drink ALOT OF water so its not hatred of water itself. I just get bored of it every now and then. I drink like half a gallon of water a day on top of diet soda + crystal light + tea. I'm going to stop buying so much soda once my stock right now (3 cans!) runs out. I'll buy it for occasional treat but other than that... (and for alcohol haha vodka + diet sunkist! sunkist covers up everything goodness. It doesn't taste like a diet soda as much imo)

puh8suwrux-Thanks! :) I drink everything through a straw to prevent it from touching my teeth so I think I should be ok... or I was when I went to my dentist. I used to drink a ton of cola and my teeth didn't really suffer at all it turned out o_O good teeth genes I suppose.

saetum-Thanks. :) I have one soda a day but I'm sure other things I eat have them too! I'm trying to figure out what they are and cut down on it. I use maybe one or two pack of splenda a day or two on my coffee/tea. Fiberone probably has some and probably my 100 calorie popcorn too. Sigh. :/

janeba-eck.. I'm not a big fan of club soda or carbonated water... it feels like there should be some kind of after taste... and I didn't like those lime ones... it tasted like cleaning detergent to me. hahaha. I'm weird like that! I might get a plain carbonated water and sqeeze some lemon into it or something.

generator8-I think so too, but I have to run to the grocery store to get it all the time and the costs add up... compared to crystal light :/

Susie cue- watering down sounds like a wonderful idea! I'm really sensitive about taste so I can definitely have a watered down version without worrying about the taste being too little. :)

Do Crystal light for the transition and then water it down or move to protein water and then water it down.

I can't drink water by itself so I have to put either crystal light or protein water powder. Have you tried lemon water? I did, and couldn't do it, so I imagine that eventually, I will be able to drink the water by itself...someday.

I honestly don't see an issue with either, in moderation.

Crystal Light is a good way to break up the water monotony, once in a while..

I find if I'm drinking the water I should do for the day the craving for the diet sodas goes way down... (I just kind of forget about them.) I've probably cut my soda consumption in half, if not more, without even trying.

I've given up soda...pretty much replaced it with water (coffee too).  I do like raspberry lemonade Crystal light though and when I'm having a harder time drinking water I use that.  Buy the "to go" packets at costco and they're pretty cheap and very portable.

I found that my favorite new drink is sparkling water mixed with fruit juice-- at about a 1-3 or 1-5 ratio. (1/4 c juice to 3/4 c water, etc.) Its not calorie free, but in the end the amount of calories I actually have will clock in between 20-50, but I feel way more refreshed with the zing of the fruit juice and the bubblyness of the sparkling water =D It feels quite luxurious actually!

The thing about juices is I dont really drink them and then the date passes... or something. And i chuck out the entire thing. :/ Good idea though, I might try it! :)

I feel like having one soda can a day is too much for me personally. I'm trying to cut down on the fake sugars.

I tried half a crystal light today and I liked it! :) I think I might go down this route for a bit. I might end up still drinking one packet a day but at least i'll drink more water with it :D

haha thanks guys! Other suggestions?
