Why do I get so light headed when I eat only fruits for breakfast??

Quote  |  Reply

I had a banana, some grapes, and some water for breakfast.  A few hours later, I had such a terrible headache and low energy that I could barely get out of bed to make me something to eat. The headache was terrible. I took some Aleeve and by the evening I was fine. I made myself a small bowl of macaroni and cheese in a matter of time I started to feel normal again. I was hoping to have another green smoothie and a salad but I was so low on energy that I needed some real food right away.  Fattening food. Why do I feel this way when I eat only fruits??

Because your blood sugar was too low.  It takes a long time to get used to small breakfasts like that.  A banana has 150 calories at most, grapes are mostly water.  Try something more filling like whole grain toast or oatmeal in addition to your fruit.  Or make a scrambled egg.

For me, toast and peanut butter with banana slices is enough to last me until lunch.

How many calories are you eating? It doesn't sound like enough food. I agree with pinskers that something more filling and substantial would be better. Make sure you get some protein in your breakfast as well.

Did you eat anything between the fruit in the morning and the bowl of macaroni in the evening? Were you only planning on having fruit, a green smoothie and a salad all day?

I read some of your previous posts to try to help better but found very little on what you are doing/eating to lose weight and how successful you are. A small bowl of mac and cheese may not be the best thing for you but I am worried about you calling it fattening when it appears you are way to low in calories. Please post more so we can help you figure out what is going on.

Even though fruits are great, healthy foods, eating just fruit will cause a blood sugar spike to some degree, especially in the absence of fats and/or proteins. You may have felt light-headed due to the rapid rise in blood sugar after eating them, and then felt crappy later on (headache, etc) after your blood sugar took a nose-dive. Try eating a balanced combination of nutrients instead of just carbs in the morning.

No, I didn't have anything between the fruit in the morning and the bowl of macaronni and cheese. I planned on having a green smoothie and a salad for lunch, but I had such a terrible headache that i didn't feel like preparing anything at all. After taking an aleeve, a few hours later I had a small bowel of macroni and cheese with some orange juice. I started to feel much better.

I'm trying to eat a more clean diet consisting of fruits, and vegetables, but the headaches and low energy make it hard to stick to it.

You probably ate all of 100 calories.

I think it's plainly obvious why you are light headed and with no energy.

A clean diet is still supposed to give you enough calories to function. If you're feeling unwell because of what you're eating (or not eating, in this case), it's a signal that you ought to change what you're doing.

Because you ate only fruits for breakfast, and nothing else until evening. I've never answered an easier question.

There have been times when I could eat nothing for breakfast but fruit (because I had to get up really early), but I rectified that by eating a proper breakfast mid-morning.

Edited to add: underlined bit.

Where is your protein and healthy fats?  Your body needs adequate amounts of both of these nutrients as well to function properly.  Add some to your breakfast and other meals.  Eating only carbs will cause blood sugar spikes and crashes, leaving you feeling like crap.  :(  Mac and cheese is basically all carbs too.

Allergy Remedies
Is It Possible to Go Natural?
The side effects of allergy medications keep some people from using them. Natural remedies can be a great alternative, but some are more effective than others.
