How long does it take for diet and exercise to start working?

I just finished night school (while working, so I gained quite a bit of weight during the program) and I've started going back to the gym and eating healthy.  It's been about two weeks and I have not lost ANY weight.  I am getting thinner because I'm building up muscles, but I also need to lose at least 20 pounds.  How long does it usually take before a healthy diet and exercise translates to some weight loss?  Thanks!

How much are you currently eating? how many calories are you taking in vs. burning? are you doing lifting or cardio or both?

It starts working right away but it can take years to get the full results.

I'm 25, 5'5", and weigh 162 pounds right now.  Before school I was about 140 so that's my goal.  

I'm eating about 1500 calories on days I work out and 1200 calories on days I don't.  I've been working out 4-5 days a week and have been doing cardio and strength training.  I definitely feel more fit, I'd just like it to show up on the scale.  I'd appreciate any help or advice.  Thanks!

Am I reading these comments correctly? Eat more...excercise less? That sure doesn't sound like it would work. I'm in the same boat. Been burning 400-500 calories 4 times a week, eating between 1000-1500 calories all days for 3 weeks and have lost zero. I'm 5'10", current weight 160, goal weight 135.

Tabithakelly:  Yes, you are reading this correctly.  If you are only eating 1000 calories, that is too few to begin with.  Then burning 400-500 a day..........umm, this is not good.  Try upping your calories to at least 1500, and probably as high as 1800.  Your body needs fuel to work efficiently.  At your height are you sure that 135 is the correct goal for you?

Tabithakelly you do realize you are starving yourself right? You eat 1000 then work out 500 you are only leaving your body 500 for vital functions like breathing and heart beat. Is destroying your body and your health really worth getting skinny?

You are aiming for the very low end of the BMI range. Being that low is not healthy for everyone and your body will fight to hold on to all it's reserves when you starve it like that. You can put whatever you want in a gallon of gas but its still only going to take your car 20-30 miles. You have to fuel your body and your metabolism and your tank needs more.

The goal is not to eat as little as possible, loose as much as possible as fast as possible and get as thin as possible. The idea is to make healthy sustainable changes that will give you a healthy strong body that will carry you for a lifetime.

If you are under 21 CC's calculators won't work for you.

You are not short, sedentary, or older therefore you need more than 1200. You should never eat as little as 1000 calories. 1500 is even to low if you are active. You are tall and therefore need way more calories. If you are a teenager you need upwards of 1800 at your height, weight and activity level.

It may sound backwards but all you are going to accomplish by eating that low is destroying your metabolism, binging and regaining anything you do manage to lose. You may not think you are doing any damage but what you can't see and feel now will catch up with you and you will regret not eating enough.

I was 135-140 until about 2 years ago; I maintained that weight for about 10 years without excercising or paying any attention to what I ate. I was doing the same amount of excercise and not really worrying about my calorie intake but after 3 weeks of that I thought and not seeing any results I thought I needed to change something.

Three weeks is not long enough for your body to adjust to a new routine. You didn't get to where you are in three weeks and you will not reverse it in three weeks. This is a marathon not a sprint. Eat enough, eat right, be active and be patient with yourself and your body. Focus more on healthy eating and exercise and the rest will follow. You deserve to be healthy and happy and that means nourishing your body. Complex carbs, proteins and fats all of those are important for a healthy body. The trick is to find the right balance not cut anything out. Best of luck.
