Just like it can take a few weeks of effort for a loss to suddenly show up, I'm wondering if it can take a few weeks for a gain to show up. I've overeaten several days this week (am in the process of moving- lots of disorganization and out of whack schedule) and I wonder if it will show up in a few weeks instead of a few days? I'm back on track now, but I know I really went significantly backward for a number of days there.
The good news is that doing the right thing for myself feels more like normal to me now than the old overeating way. I was relieved to get back to my fresh salads, fruits and lean meats after the fast food and other processed junk. Also prefer an active life to a sedentary one. I am making permanent changes, just revisit the old awful place occasionally. Makes me appreciate the new place even more.
why would it take a few days to show up, think about that for a minute. the food and water you have consumed weighs say 2 pounds, then magically 5 days latter its converted to 5 pounds in your body ? if there was going to be a difference you would of seen it already...
I completely disagree with bmfan77. Of course the second you've swallowed your food, it won't be converted to fat. Your body needs an energy supply, and stores excess as fat later. I've heard that it takes about 3 days for food you ate to become fat. However, I don't think you will suddenly gain weight several weeks after overeating.

I got a lot of the experience you describe here! I know you gain weight, if you overeat, in other words, if you eat more then you really need, you will gain weight. It goes slowly, and I dont know about how many days. I just need to see on myself. I took me years to go up to 116 kg (255 Pound). I also overeat sometimes, when I have a bad day. BUT...a big BUT, I contuinue with my exercises. So I use more kcal then I have been eating. If you eat 2000 kcal in one day, and you will only sit still on your work, maybe walk slow to Subway/bus, and then home too look on TV, eat dinner, and then you go to bed. A day like that, you use about 1600 kcal, from the food you have been eating!! The rest, 400 kcal is building up your body, cholestorol, bad fat, and also water. If you go on with exercise, the days you eventually overeat, you will NOT gain weight. And you will for sure gain weight when you overeat, and also stop to move your body, more then you usually do! I think its quite easy to understand. Its like when you put gas in the car for 15 USD every week. And one week the car is home, because of reapair. And you still put gas for 15 USD. The result will be that you have the gas on the ground. Because you didnt drive! And its same about the human body. Anyway, I dont know how long time before its fat in my body for overeat! And Im not interested. If I know, I will start like before....
I overeat, and know it take several days, before I can see it. Then I think in my head, thats no idea to exercise, because I allready destroyed 3 months dieting! And then Im back, on step ONE again. I dont want that anymore, Im really tired of being fat!

I would have to refer back to the old saying "it took time to gain your weight, you can't expect to loose over night". Another words, it takes time for your body to store it....if you are burning enough.
From persoanl experience, after a weekend of bad eating and little exercise, generally it takes until Tues or Wed to really see the scale peak, so I agree that it takes a few days for your body to convert to fat.
Don't fret, just get back on track & learn from all this. Plus, moving is stressful but new adventures await! Good luck!!
A gain is immediate. Granted, it takes a bit of time to digest the food and turn it into fat, but we're talking on the order of hours, maybe a day or two at most, but certainly not weeks. However, on the scale, the gain is immediate.
Think about it this way: You eat something. Once it is digested it is broken into its component parts -- fats, carbohydrates, protein, water, roughage -- it is absorbed by the blood stream. The protein will be shuttled off for things like cell repair, hair and nail growth, enzyme production, etc. Extra protein will be converted to glucose to be used for energy. The body will break down carbohydrates for energy first, then it will go for the fats. Any fat left over will be stored as body fat, and any carbohydrates left over (that haven't been stored as glycogen already) will be converted to fat and stored. When the body needs energy and doesn't have enough from the food you've just eaten, it will tap into those fat stores.
You can't gain weight from something you've eaten two weeks ago. You can't go to bed one night and wake up a pound heavier unless you were eating in your sleep. Weight loss is masked by water retention. Unless you are dehydrated, weight gain is generally not going to be masked by fluid loss.
Without getting scientific, because I'm not that smart , I'll just share how it goes for me.
If I overeat for a period of days, (or even just one day), that's extra food weight in my body, so the scale is gonna reflect a higher weight. That's not to say it's ALL fat gain. If you only eat 1,750 calories over maintenance (=1/2 pound gain), the scale might show an extra 3 pounds. Only after digesting everything completely will the real gain show up. It takes anywhere from a few days to a week for me, depending on how much I ate in how many days. If it's gradual, like an extra 250 everyday, the results are pretty much immediate. But if I overeat in 1 or 2 days, the food weight will mask the gain until things are digested.
