Losing weight but stomach getting bigger?

Quote  |  Reply

I have been on weight watchers and exercising twice daily for an hour 4 times a week since Dec. 26th. I am 5'2 and started out at 183lbs, I am now down to 164 lbs, but for some reason, my stomach appears to be getting bigger!

It is insane, from the side I almost look like I'm pregnant or something, but I know I'm not because I just had a period and I've taken tests that came out negative.

Has anyone else had this problem? Is there something I could be doing without knowing it to make my stomach grow? Is it possible that my stomach just looks huge now because the rest of me is getting smaller?

Yes, it's possible that your stomach appears larger as other body parts shrink. We cannot control where the fat goes from first. You should measure your waist, however, so that youi have a "reality" check--in a couple of weeks, measure again. Maybe it's just getting smaler at a slower rate, for example. Measuring is a good way to know what's really happening.

Good luck.

You know, I've had the same problem.  I've only lost 10 pounds, but I feel that my stomach is appearing larger.  I think it may be that you are losing weight all over.  So if your arms and hips lose weight too, they may make your stomach stick out more because you have more weight to lose there.  At least that's my theory.

that is my theory too and l'm stcking to it. l had to start lifting weights with my husband, his stomach disappeared but he didn't lose that much actual weight.  l figured if it worked for him, it will work for me too.

This happened to me too.  My theory, though, is that I lost a lot of muscle all over my body and hence my stomach is not as tight as it used to be.  My legs are sort of floppy too, which makes me think I am right.

Yeah I think it's a pretty common thing. Especially with me - I went from being a pear shaped girl to just being an apple. My legs and arms are pretty darned toned... don't think they can really get much skinnier. But the darn belly just wont go. It wont! :(

Hoping with lowered body fat % over the years I will finally get that killer stomach.

Hi,

This thread has just about saved my sanity....  THANK YOU !

I too have a huge belly (looks that way to me) I have lost 11 pounds since January and am working out every day.  I seem to be loosing and toning except for my stomach area... I too though OMG... I look pregnant !  Similarly I can't be, so was getting really worried...

Having read all your comments it appears a totally 'natural' thing... so again thank you...

Good luck everyone... here's to smaller bellies in the future - when they catch up with the rest of our bodies....
