Still losing weight, but stomach getting BIGGER!

Quote  |  Reply

About two months ago I hit a 35 lb weight loss mark, and I was feeling really happy with the shape of my body. But in the last couple of months, even though I've kept losing weight (now 40 lbs down) my stomach has gotten big again.

I was really happy with about a 32 inch waist. Two months later, it's almost 35 inches, but I have LOST weight and size in my arms, legs, breasts, etc. I don't understand this. I'm not starving myself, and I just started at a school where I carry a backpack up and down stairs all day, so I don't think I could be losing muscle.

Does anyone know what can cause this, or what I can do about this?

Probably a dumb question on my part but you're not cooking a bun in the oven, are you?

If not - maybe your retaining more gas than usual?  Have you been eating anything lately that would cause gas to build up?  I know I had a week recently where something wonky happened and my stomach was HUGE - seriously - it was troublesome.

LOL, not a dumb question, but no, I don't think I am.

I thought about gas/bloating, too, but it seems to me more like more flab on my belly than just stomach muscles sticking out...

Does retaining water make fat seem bigger?

Yes, your fat cells fill up with water instead of fat. the GOOD thing is that water weight is super easy to get rid of cuz all you have to do is work hard to sweat and pee it out.

You said you don't think you're losing muscle. Contrary to your assumption, losing muscle would actually make your tummy SMALLER, not bigger.

If you are GAINING muscle in that area (lots of sit ups or other exercise that targets the stomach), then this could definitely cause the extra three inches of girth.

are you doing lots of crunches, becuz if there is any fat around your stomach, when you do crunches it will make your muscles bigger and push out your stomach more

Thanks; I actually meant I didn't think the weight loss in the rest of my body was muscle loss, but I hadn't thought about whether I was gaining stomach muscle...

I'm back to a 31-32" waist, so I guess it was just water retention. Maybe too much salt... I dunno. It was just frustrating, and had me worried I was losing my figure along with the fat, which I don't want to do!

Thanks for the help, everyone!
