The Morning Workout Group - JOIN

Quote  |  Reply

This is a group for people who, regardless of fitness, weightloss or general heath goals, all want to commit to getting up each morning and beginning the day with a workout.

Any time of the day is a great time to work out, but there's something really satisfying about exercising first thing before you do almost anything else and kickstarting the rest of your day.

To get us started I have some questions to ask you :)

1.   How many days a week do you plan on doing a morning workout?

2.   Do you eat breakfast before or after you workout and what do you typically have?

3.   Do you do any exercise during the day/evening in addition to your morning workouts?

4.   Do you have any specific fitness, health or weightloss goals?

5.   What motivates you to get up and exercise each morning?

My answers:

1.   My goal is to workout in the morning at least 5 days a week, with one or two 'active rest days' where I do a little bit of non-strenuous exercise, not necessarily in the morning.

2.   I eat half a banana before my morning workout then a decent breakky after. I usually have fruit, yoghurt, nuts & sometimes a piece of toast.

3.   Sometimes I do additional exercise but the morning workouts are my staples. As of next week my friend and I are going to go to the gym together once a week so that will be an additional workout.

4.   I want to loose a little fat and gain a lot of tone. My main measure of progress is a tape measure *EDIT: and a mirror*. I also want to enjoy making gradual fitness gains by doing time challenges, lifting heavier things, doing more reps or round etc.

5.   Currently I'm very motivated by a lovely online fitness coach called zuzana, posting "ZWOWs" on youtube.

 1.) If I'm ambitious, 4-6, if I'm realistic 3, if I'm lazy, then 2

2.) I always eat after I work out, cause I usually get dressed and dash out the door to catch a train after I work out. Therefore I eat breakfast in the office; Greek yogurt, granola or nuts/seeds/raisins thrown in, chopped up banana or kiwi included, coffee, stevia, a bit of creamer. On the weekends I usually have a peanut butter-banana sandwich for breakfast.

3.) Nope, I just work out in the morning. Occasionally I might sprint to a bus or train, and I walk for a bit, but most of my working out is done in the AM.

4.) Lose 5lbs-10lbs more pounds? Not really, I'm mainly interesting in being graceful, strong, and limber.

5.) I recently saw a video of an 86 year old woman doing floor gymnastics; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W2bOED5LzZw Shes's amazing, what she did is amazing, and if I want to be just as bad a** as her when I'm 86, I need to get up and work for it. So, that's my current motivation.

- i do running between 3 and 4 am , the problem is that i do that before sleeping , can you think of that as "early" ?

- Do you consider trackers like this one http://www.sports-tracker.com/, participants will need a smartphones for that

I've always wanted to workout in the morning....since i consider myself more of a morning person...but can't imagine getting up any earlier than I already do (5:30). How do you get yourself going in the beginning? Of course in June (summer break...I work in a school ) morning takes on a whole new meaning :) Then I always have a small breakfast, cup of coffee and I'm ready to workout! I know it makes soooo much sense to wake up and make sure you get your workout in before the busy day gets in your way....just need a kick start to try it :-/

o get us started I have some questions to ask you :)

1.   How many days a week do you plan on doing a morning workout?

3 or 4 for morning EX ( I am trying for 3.5 hours total a week)

2.   Do you eat breakfast before or after you workout and what do you typically have?

Just depends on the day but I eat light if before...I can go longer if I eat but I am not trying to go over an hour on most days

3.   Do you do any exercise during the day/evening in addition to your morning workouts?

Yes, I ride horses, swim, do physical outdoor labor around the house...gardening, shoveling etc...some body weight resistance training, jump rope.

4.   Do you have any specific fitness, health or weightloss goals?

I am 4# from my Current goal to be under 150# ...so 149 and maintain a while

5.   What motivates you to get up and exercise each morning?

I prefer to do it in the morning...then tackle the rest of my day... I am more of a morning person and it gives me time to think, plan my day and spend time with my dog (I usually walk, jog, hike or bike ride with my dog...he has way more stamina than me so he is a good partner..LOL)

We are having a rainy spell so I am not on track this week like I was a few weeks ago...

Vonapathy, that 86 year old lady looks so healthy and energetic. Good on her! What's your exercise of choice to get you closer to your goal of being graceful, strong and limber?

Ooozzz, I guess that counts, it's still in the morning, even if it is a little strange lol. How long have you been doing that? And unfortunately I don't have a smartphone, but maybe I'll make my next phone a smart phone, since I'll have to get a new one later this year.

Lak111, I know what you mean. To get ready for work I have to get up at 5.20 or 5.30 as well. Then I figured, hey what's another 20-30 minutes? So now I get up at 5am to workout. I just try to go to bed at 9pm - that's the hardest part really. What kind of exercise would you chose to do?

Kmstearns, wow so close to goal well done. And that's cool that you're also active in a functional way. I would love to start gardening - just have to get around to buying some tools. What sort of things do you mainly garden?

joaree,

HI,

I mainly care for my horse and my friends horses...feeding, cleaning stalls, then I have a dog who digs so I have to go around my yard and fill in the holes LOL...

I also try and grow tomatoes, and berries but that's about it up here...Gardening in the pac NW consists of weeding weeding weeding or living with the weeds ;-)

I think walking/jogging and sprinting with my dog is the best exercise I do...so I aim to do it 3-4 days a week...

What is everyone's exercise of choice for am work outs?

I feel like I can respond to this, even though currently I am not doing my normal routine due to a fracture in my foot that requires me to wear a crazy boot all the time :( but anyway, I was an extremely motivated morning exerciser for several months prior to my accident.

1. I worked out everyday of the week and I plan to return to this lifestyle once I'm fully healed :)

2. I would always eat a light breakfast about a half an hour before exercise. I would typically have a bowl of high fiber, low sugar kamut puffs with almond milk and coffee.

3. I would usually do a little strength training in the evening or yoga or pilates.

4. I'm maintaining my weight currently and want to become more fit and gain some muscle mass as well.

5. Honestly, getting to eat more. lol. It sounds horrible but I like big filling meals and snacks and so I know that an intense cardio workout each morning burns off enough calories for me to indulge a bit more during the day. :)

Kmstearns, that's cool. I'm thinking i should at least try to grow some herbs where I live. And my main workouts are short, intense body weight workouts. They are done at some speed though so sometimes have a cardio component. I want to do a bit more cardio on the weekends though.

Hi Jvau, that's a shame about your foot. How long does the doctor think it'll take to heal. What kind of exercise would you normally do in the morning? My guess is some sort of cardio since you would do strength or flexibility in the evening.

joaree: He tells me three weeks of wearing a boot and limiting the time spent on my feet should do the trick, however, I'll need to start off slow when I get back into exercising regularly. I'll probably start with some low impact cardio and move my way back into my normal routine which was typically 45 minutes on the elliptical or HIT type cardio based workouts or running. I think all the jumping messed up my foot, so I might limit that at first as well.

Yeah starting slow is always a good idea. And I've heard that you should warm up but not stretch before a workout. Strecthing after a workout is good though. The idea is basically to avoid stretching cold muscles.

Who worked out this morning?

I'd like to join!

1.  4 mornings a week.

2.  I typically eat breakfast after I work out.  I typically have a protein granola bar and a glass of almond milk or cranberry juice.  Often, some light string cheese too.

3.  I play volleyball 1-2 times per week in addition to my workouts.

4.  I would like to lose another 5 pounds and tone up quite a bit.  I plan to run a few 5Ks this summer too.

5.  The group of women that I work out with motivate me to get up early!

1) four to five :) 2) A banana and small glass of chocolate milk. Sometimes a handful of nuts. 3) exercise at night at least twice a week after morning work outs. 4) My goal is to be as healthy and in shape as possible and comfortable enough to stop comparing myself to others all the time. 5) SUMMER. Haha and of course happiness, it makes me feel proud of myself for my determination. Also I love being able to honestly say 'i work my **** off' when friends ask me how I did it :)

Hi Krausp, I take it your morning exercise is running since you want to do 5Ks over the summer?

Kelrantymus, that sounds like a great goal! What is the criteria for getting through it?

Maryspigel, its terrible how much we compare ourselves to others right? I think the main reason I do it because I worry about other comparing me to them haha!

What's everyone doing for Easter? Will chocolate be on or off the menu? I'm away for a few days hopefully getting a few sun rays and chilling out, maybe even using the change of scenery to do some interesting new morning runs/walks? See you when I get back! PS I'm down a cm in my waist today :)

I love working out when I wake up. However I work nights so my morning workouts are at 5pm when I wake up instead of 5am most days of the week. On my weekends I usually workout after I wake up just to get it out of the way.

1. I work out 6 days a week and about 5 of those days its after I wake up. My main form of exercise is a staionary bike since I have some babck problems but I've also started walking more and I do workout videos also.

2. I have to eat something before workouts or my blood sugar gets too low and I have to stop. Its usually a bowl of cheerios.

3. I don't do any other exercise during the day usually

4. My goal is to be under 150lbs and then to maintain. I want to be healthy so me and my husband can start having kids!

5. My main motivation to get up and work out is to get it out of the way. By the time I get home from work in the morning I'm too tired to do anything

Got up and did 45 minute walk jog today...then breakfast...then some barn chores for 25 min...then off to work...I am down a size in pants so I am feeling good...5 weeks into my eating plan...

How are all you other AM EX People doing?

Hey guys, it's Friday and this week I went to spin class 5 out of 5 times at 5:30 am! It feels great. One run tomorrow until I get to rest Sunday :) do any of you guys feel like others (friends and fam) are getting annoyed with your early bedtime? I went from staying up to 11:30 12 to sleeping at 9 30 10 in order to have energy and my friends especially seem annoyed I don't want to go out all that much at night, it's frustrating, I know they don't mean it but it feels like theyre not being supportive.

Ksmart, that definitely counts! The main thing is that you're staring your 'day' with a workout. How long have you been doing this routine?

Kmstearns, yay for being down a size! Feels awesome to fit into your clothes better and even be able to buy smaller clothes. I'm looking forward to that. And well done for having stuck to your eating plan for 5 weeks. What does it involve?

Marspiegl, that shows some dedication managing to get to a 5.30am spin class! It's great that they offer it that early too. I don't really have that problem with friends because they only usually want me to go out in the weekend when I wont need to get up so early the next day, but it is hard having to go to bed early. A lot of the time I just want to stay up and watch a favorite program with my boyfriend but I know I'll be paying for it the next day.

So I'm obviously back from my trip away. I have the rest of the week off work and uni so I can sleep in a one or two hours later than usual and still get my workout in. No excuses not to eat like a saint either! Should be a good week.

--HI,

I am on a mostly paleo/primal plan with some dairy....so no grains, potatoes, bread or starches...

I am eating mostly protein, veggies and fruit with some nuts, cheese and good fats like avocado, EVOO, coconut oil...

It's working...in the past I did calorie reduction on a low fat type diet and it was a struggle. I think the starches spike my blood sugar and make me hungrier...

But keeping it off is the real trick!

Kmstearns, that sounds interesting. Do you find that diet challenging? I agree about fats. I like to include plenty of healthy fats - they make your meals more interesting, keep you fuller and are important for keeping your skin nice. And I love fruit and veggies so I wouldn't have any issues there.

I started my day today with this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zB5rnCbtY8s

It's a short workout but its tough! May do some ab work later in the day too. Now for a little bit of housework. What sort of workouts did everyone do this morning?
