So... I need new underwear. Help!

Quote  |  Reply

I feel really silly even asking this question, but I honestly don't know the answer so I'm hoping someone can help fill me in.

Last June I started using Calorie Count and for the first time in many years I have actually been able to accomplish real weight loss.  I'm 38 years old, 5'0" tall and my starting weight was 179.2lb.  As of today I'm down to 141.8lb -- only 30lb to go to reach goal.  Yay!

So while that's great and everything, I've discovered a problem that I had never even considered:  I have no idea what size underwear I need to buy.  For years now I have worn Cacique string bikini panties by Lane Bryant -- the kind with the two thin elastic bands on each hip.  They are super comfortable and I really like them.

But now that I've lost (and am still losing) weight, my Caciques are getting too big for me.  I still wear them, but only because I have no idea how to figure out what size underwear I should be wearing now.  I've looked at underwear in a similar style at various stores but they only come in sizes 5, 6, 7 and 8.  At best I'm a size 12 right now.

For example, these panties at Kohl's are a perfect match to my Caciques, but the largest size they come in is size 8.  What about people who are larger than size 8 -- like the average American woman??

I can't figure out what the proper size is for me.  Caciques are easy because they reflect the actual dress size -- 14/16, etc.  But other "non-plus-sized underwear" out there seems to have some sort of weird sizing system.  I have never seen size 10 or size 12 underwear, for instance.

Is this just me? I can't figure this out.  Help me!

I think size 7 underwear is a large.  I remember it because L7 is a funny way of saying square.  Anyway, anything larger than that is probably a plus size.  I think I'm wearing a 9.

right I think mrsjmcd is totally right because as best I know as well, the numbered sizes like that aren't meant to be interpreted the same way at all as when they are standardly used in clothes sizes, etc. and most important it should help you to know that even if you don't actually purchase a Hanes or a Jockey brand, a lot of their under products have the translation as to like hip and waist size coordinating with THEIR particular sizing structure -- on the back plastic or cardboard of the package, similar to the way pantyhose do, you know? -- and it's a huge help to apply to all underwears and stuff!!

Here's a size chart you can use.  It has both bras and underwear.  I hope it helps: http://www.mycamila.com/sizechart.html

I nominate this thread to the "Most Forboding Title Ever" category. O.o

Curiously I just read an article today that mentioned something in there about Lane Bryant.

What dress size or waist size am I really?

Not sure if it will help you, but it's a very interesting article!

Maybe this will help you...

I am 5'6" tall and about 160 pounds and My underwear are a size 6 currently. I might need to go to a 7, but I'll see about that when we have monies to go shopping next month. What I'm saying is that at 141 pounds you should be able to wear a size 6. and on the underwear packages I think it gives you a chart on what sizes fit what size bodies, approximately....kind of like what you see on pantyhose packages.

 ^^^

In a size 12 pant I wear a size 7 underware

I think all stores carry different sizes according to pant size so the best thing would be to try them on over your panties. With that being said I know that Victoria's Secret panties run as this:

pant size        ;  panties size

0-2               &nb sp;    xs

4-6               &nb sp;    sm

8-10        ;       &n bsp;  med

12-14      &nbs p;        lg

16-18      &nbs p;        ex lg

I'm a size 8 at 160lbs, so I think you should probably be smaller than that. I think you should definitely take measurements though, and they have on the backs of Hanes packages what the sizes are to the measurements. I'm around 40 inches around my hips, so I'm an 8 which is XL but I can fit into a 7 too.

once again, originally pointed out in Post #2. See Post #2!

A few years ago I lost 40lbs due to stress in 3 months. I had to buy new underwear as well. I had dropped from a size 18W to a 14-16 misses. I wore the same underwear that you love so much too! lol! I was able to fit into a size 7 or 8 from "regular" stores. Here's my suggestion... buy a 3 pack of Hanes in a style you like (personally, I love the boy shorts now) in a size 7. It will cost about $5. If they fit, great, you know what to buy. If not, go up or down a size depending on how they fit. Typically a size 9 is a XXL in underwear. I'm back up to an 18W again (damn) and wear a size 9 Hanes boy short.

Congrats on your weight loss! Keep pushing ahead and don't spend a fortune on something that's going to be too big in a few months anyway!
