What are net calories compared to calories? I'm lost .....help

"Net calories are calories burned during exercise (not BMR/Sedentary burn), minus calories eaten."

Most people seem to look for a weight loss of 1lb per week, which requires a deficit (negative net calories) of at least 500 calories per day.  Many people don't understand the whole slow weight loss thing, so they push for targets which are much great than the -500...
