Oatmeal (old fashioned, steel cut, not instant) is a much better choice than white rice, but I wouldn't eat it for dinner because at night you tend to be a couch potato.  You're not going to burn it off, you're going to store those calories as fat.

Eat it earlier in the day when you're more apt to burn it off.

What you eat doesn't determine whether or not you will lose weight it is how much.  How many calories does the oatmeal serving have when compared to the rice serving?

so you recommend that i eat oatmeal for breakfast, lunch and snack but not for dinner? can i eat yogurt for dinner instead?

Um... I'm really hoping by "oatmeal for breakfast, lunch, snack, and yogurt for dinner" you mean "as part of a balanced daily diet"

you do need other things in there - veggies, protein, etc.

You're not going to burn it off, you're going to store those calories as fat. Eat it earlier in the day when you're more apt to burn it off.

wrong. Its the calories that count.
Any complex carbohydrate is a good substitute for rice.   Control the portion-sizes if you want to lose weight.   How about trying alternatives such as quinoa grain, cous-cous, barley, cracked wheat or lentils?
I think it's a great idea if you like oatmeal.  It's got similar carb content to rice, but also has more fiber - and soluble fiber to reduce cholestero.  It's a healthful and tasty idea!
