Omega 3 supplements: Fishy taste when I burp! lol

Quote  |  Reply

Hello,

Sometimes I take Omega 3 supplements, as I don't eat much fish. The only thing I hate is that it tastes all fishy in my mouth when I burp! It's pretty gross. I always have to chew minty gum or something. Why does this happen and what can I do to avoid it, if anything? Is it better to take the supplements before or after meals? Also, are some omega 3 pills better than others?

Thank you!

You burp fishy tastes because you're eating fish oil.... very strongly-flavoured stuff.    If you ate garlic capsules you'd burp garlic.   You could try taking it with a meal, see if it makes a difference but really, you're much better off trying to find more natural sources of Omega 3.... salmon, some cold-pressed oils, flax seeds, walnuts, sea greens... and incorporate them in your diet

How much omega 3 do we really need? I eat salmon pretty often (almost 2X a week), but not most of the other stuff, like seeds or walnuts. I was thinking about getting the capsules, but is it worth it? Will my body even absorb all of it?

I've seen a few articles recently that question the benefits of taking omega-3 in supplement form.  Apparently it doesn't have anything like the same effect as just 'eating fish' or 'eating walnuts'.... not harmful or anything but not exactly beneficial.  I'd save your money.

Salmon twice a week and a few nuts and the occasional splash of canola or rapeseed oil on your salad sounds much more pleasant than burping like a dyspeptic mermaid Smile

I take Natrol Omega-3 fish Oil capsules at my doctor's suggestion, and I have never had a problem with fishy burps. I don't know if that's just me, or the brand, but it's never been a problem.

Now, if someone can tell me how to get rid of garlic burps (and breath) I would be eternally grateful.

They make burpless capsules for the fish oil.

hi

Try to take the pills just before you go to sleep at night. I found this to be the best way to avoid the smelly burps. But i do notice another, nasty smelling effects of the omega 3 capsules, I became more gassy and they smell NASTY, worse than when i get stomach bug!

Does anyone know how to reduce or eliminate this side effect??

Make that grapeseed oil...g's are important ;-)  Love the mermaid imagery.

HAHA! First of all, thanks for the laugh. I had the same problem. The only ones I have found that don't taste fishy afterward are the Acai Berry extract and the Omega 3 supplement from Andrew Lessman on Home Shopping network.

I would highly suggest Andrew Lessman's. They are expensive, but worth every penny. Most of his supplements are tastless, additive free and come in capsules that you can pull apart and add to food, if you can't swallow pills easily. The swallowing is what brought me there in the first place.

Hi,

i had the same problem until i found Coromega omega 3 on amazon. it's an orange liquid in a squeezy packet and they taste delicious, like an orange popsicle .great too if you want to add to yogurts or smoothies. Think they offer a buy one get one deal too, most of the time. Go check them out on Amazon!

Take them just before you go to bed at night.

I've heard that storing them in the freezer helps to keep it less fishy tasting...

double post.. sorry

I've heard that if you refridgerate or freeze the capsules that they do not burp up. Not sure if it really works but maybe worth a try?

I like hemp seeds for omega-3s, though you will have to endure hippie jokes if you admit this to anyone. Chia seeds are good, too, if you are like me and will never ever grind flax seeds in the morning!

Oh gosh. I know all about those fish burps. I started taking the capsules because the smell of any type of fish almost makes me gag, and its even worse when I can practically taste the fishy smell! So gross. I try and swallow as little air with the capsules as possible and I don't seem to burp as much.

Putting them in the fridge really does make a difference!!!!

It depends on the brand you buy. Buy the tasteless/odorless kind.

Fish Oil is one of the most beneficial supplements you can take. Vitamin D is right up there too.

you can also use flaxseed for your omega 3s.  They are available in the bulk food section of natural food stores.  Just ground them in a coffee grinder and add them to your smoothies or sprinkle on your salad.  Use about 2 tablespoons everday.  Should be ground fresh everday as the nutritional value will start to deteriorate.
