i only want to eat 600 calories a day

i feel eating 1200 calories is to much i am 5'6 145 pounds and i wanna loose 25 pounds but faster then 2 pounds a week i no it isnt " healthy" but how can i speed up the process

The fastest weight loss will come from adding exercise on top of a healthy diet, not cutting calories to such a drastic target. You know it isn't "healthy" but if you are not eating healthy then your body will go into survival mode instead of just dropping fat like you want it to.

No one on this site is going to recommend anything under 1500-1600 calories for you.

what about 1000 is that still ok as long as im eating healthy lots of whole grain fruits vetables ect?

Why are you so blatantly saying that you'd basically like to have an eating disorder, are you looking for people to have sympathy for you? 

 First off everyone knows that it is NOT healthy to eat 600 calories a day, to see the list of reasons look pretty much anywhere on this website.

Second, eating a ridiculously low amount actually makes your metabolism slow down in the long run..soo..not a good idea.

If you want to lose weight the healthy way, just make sure you eat around 1200 a day and exercise plenty. And stick to healthy foods like fruits and veggies (but not solely)...the obvious stuff. There is not a "healthy" way to speed up the process..

Just a few words from the wise: I was trying to diet off of 700 calories a day, and now one of my organs is failing. That's right, my organs. Didn't treat it properly and now my gallbladder kicks my butt on a daily basis and needs to be removed by a surgeon- all because I did not consume enough calories. Of course that's aside from the dizzy spells, blacking out, nausea, hair falling out, etc. It's not fun.

I don't understand why you want to crash diet anyway. This is about making lifestyle changes. You'd be just fine dieting at 1200 calories and losing 1-2 pounds per week. It's the only way to take it off and keep it off.

But please please please don't harm your body. I know you don't think about the damage you are doing when you are doing it, but you will harm yourself.

BREAKDOWN OF WHY 1200 CALORIES A DAY IS MINIMUM

Your body needs at least 1200 calories per day to survive. Here is a very rough scientific break down provided by a dietician for a  5' 2", 19 year old female weighing approximately 100 pounds, sitting around all day and doing nothing:

-The heart needs 12% of the calories (144 cals)
-The kidney needs 12% of the calories (144 cals)
-The Liver needs 23% of the calories (276 cals)
-The brain needs 23% of the calories (276 cals)
-The skeletal muscle needs 30% of the calories (360 cals)

i defintly do not have an eating disorder..... but i did do some further reasearch and 1200 seems healtheir and easier thanks for the concern

also lets say i eat 1200 calories a day but go to the gym and burn 600 is that healthy?

I'm no expert, but I think you really should 1800 calories then if you burn an extra 600...otherwise it would basically be like you ate 600 in the first place...although I might be wrong.

By only consuming 1200 calories and burning 600 calories at the gym, you are still only supplying your body with 600 calories to function. The 600 calories that you burn off by exercise will never be seen by most of your organs. You should probably talk to your doctor to find out the best weight loss option is for you.

The point is that as long as  your intake is at 1200, you will inevitably LOSE WEIGHT. You will, and I know it doesn't feel like it and that you might feel fat eating so much, but it will work.

In terms of a calorie deficit, eating more and exercising it off is redundant; however, exercising has many benefits that anyone trying to lose weight should take advantage of. Exercising will give you better cardiovascular health, a lower % body fat, and higher % muscle mass. Muscle burns calories faster than fat, so by increasing the amount of muscle you have, you will increase your body's ability to burn calories even when your doing nothing.

Jewlee, you will not lose faster. You will starve your body and your metabolism will respond by hoarding fat and using up your muscle mass and organ tissue for energy. You will get sick on 600 calories a day. You need to face the fact that breaking unhealthy habits and incorporating nutrition and excercise habits into your lifestyle takes time, and taking pounds off takes time. One to two pounds a week lost is the healthy payoff, but that's only the measure - you'll feel a lot better while you're doing it, too.

CC is not the place to be looking for advice that will reinforce a 600 cal diet or ultra rapid weight loss. Not only are the majority of members following a reasonable plan themselves and wouldn't advocate something so unhealthy, giving you advice or encouraging what you're suggesting would be against forum posting guidelines.

The best, and healthiest, way to lose weight is by a balanced eating plan with adequate calorie intake for your age, height and activity level, combined with physical activity. It's not a quick fix - but it's the best way to stay healthy. I strongly suggest that you use the CC tools and advice to put together a more reasonable plan.

I personally want to eat about 5000 calories a day because I love food. However doing that would seriously damage my health. Just like eating 600 calories a day will damage your health. Extremes are ALWAYS bad.

The OP is a teenager, so 1200 is not sufficient.   You will screw up your metabolism long term if you go too low.

1200 calories in a day is the minimum recommended intake for a 5'1" sedentary middle aged adult woman who is trying to lose weight.  Each individual has characteristics that modify this amount.  Use a tool and enter your information to get an accurate number.

  • Gender - men should eat ~300 calories more per day.
  • Height - add ~50 calories per inch over 5'1"
  • Age - add ~300 calories if you're a under 20
  • Activity level - add calories based on your activities
  • Weight - add ~100 calories for each weight category above normal

Your body does not understand that you had a calorie deficit and should lose weight.  Your body is more like the LAX airport that is constantly undergoing construction.  It needs the supplies (calories, vitamins, minerals, protein, fat, carbs, sugars, etc.).  Your body does it's normal functions of breathing, circulating blood, growing hair, etc.  If it has extra materials for this then it puts them in storage (fat cells).  If it doesn't have enough materials to do the job, then it looks for some in storage (fat cells).  If the on hand supply seems more than a bit short then slows some of it's construction until such a time as it has enough materials to do the job (starvation mode/slow metabolism).  If the supply is really short for a long time it borrows from organs and bones.  A calorie deficit of over 1000 calories fro most people slows their metabolism which is not a good idea for losing weight.  For many people, as they get closer to their goal they are unable to have a deficit of over 500 calories.

In the past I have put myself on some pretty low calorie diets and all that has ever happened is I have lost control of the urge to binge day after day promising myself that I would be good tomorrow.

Three months down the line i was fatter than ever! However if I had followed a sensible plan then three months down the line I would have been a stone or so lighter, not all the way there but still feeling pretty good about myself and more motivated to carry on.


I don't know much about metabolism or brm and even though the allur or losing 2 stone or so in 2 months is very tempting i think its better to stick to a healthier diet with a much higher chance or success besides by doing it this way you will be more likely to learn about eating/ excercise patterns that will help you keep the weight off.

What is more important? The way you look or what the scales say?

If the way you look is more important, eat a healthy 1200-1400 cals and go to the gym.  Loosing 5 " and staying the same weight looks better than loosing 3 pounds.  In a gym you can tighten your muscles to loose inches.  More muscle also increases your metabolism to help you loose weight faster.   

in 6 weeks you can make significant progress working out.

Sweet heart... I am 5'1 and 125lbs. I know I can lose 1 lb a day by eating only 300-500 calories... but it's not good for you and eventually you are going to miss food. 1200 is NOT too much for you. I eat 1200 and it's helping me lose weight without even exercising.

i know what it feels like to see yourself bigger than you really are. That's what you are doing right now. The least amount if weight that you should weigh is 125-130 lbs. I'm about your size and I have been eating about 1200 calories a day and doing my daily normal routine. I do a lot of moving in my job and work a lot so I would never consider eating much less than that. If i were you I would eat 1200 calories at least. you shouldn't worry too much about dropping the lbs fast. The first 5 lbs should fall off pretty easily then definately don't go beyond 2 lbs a week. Don't obsess over it, do it for your health. Practice good eating habits and it will eventually come naturally. I hope that you will choose the healthy route because in the long run it will benifit you more than any other way.

I personally eat around 1800 a day (and on a day where i think "sod it i'm going to treat myself" ad days where i have vigorous gym sessions around 2000kcals.

At my gym sessions I burn at least 400kcal (going at it like a madman!) but if you exercise I promise you you'll lose the weight, and you dont have to miss out on stuff you love.

But it all depends on your height, as i'm only 5'3 my body will allow it (its probably bad for me but im losing weight so something is working!) but i suppose the taller you are the more likely your body will store fat as you have a bigger ratio. But in all honesty do what works for you. I hate people that say you should and shouldn't do this. If your comfortable go for it! Good luck and I wish you all the best :) xxx
