Is it possible to gain weight from watermelon?

Quote  |  Reply

I'm on a diet and I ate kind of a lot of slices of watermelon about 2,5-3 kilograms (equals aprox 750 kcal). My total calorie input for yesterday was about 2000 kcal. I'm 5'3" and 117 lbs (my goal weight is 110 lbs).

each day (about 5x a week) I usually eat 3/4 of a huge weightermelon!! Not the small kind. (I eat half at one sitting and later I eat 1/2 of the other half of the huge watermelon :/ will this get me fat?

Thanx for your advice:)!

You will gain just as much weight on 700 calories of watermelon as you would on 700 calories of peanut butter.  It all comes down to calories in vs. calories out.

However, 2.5-3 kg of watermelon PER DAY seems a bit excessive, and I wouldn't be surprised if it gave you a stomach ache...

If you eat more calories that you burn, you will put on weight. Doesn't matter if it is watermelon, carrot sticks or donuts.

If one type of  food is a huge proportion of your daily intake though, you may miss out on nutrients.

Hey, that's funny, I ate almost an entire watermelon today. 800+ calories worth. It fit into my calorie allotment, so I won't gain weight (neither will you).

the problem is that I've exceeded my calorie allowance, I ate aprox 2000 kcal....It's obvious to me that it's impossible to loose weight with this amount of kcal even though I ate a Ceasar salad, a protein shake and a coffee..but to gain weight from veggies and watermelon....Cryand according to todays weigh in I've gained 0.3 kg..

thanx for your input;)!

1) but the crux is as adrienne so relevanty pointed out, if you took IN 2000 calories, what WAS your total burn? and

2) if you say your current weight is clocking in as a gain of 3 tenths of a kg, that appears to be still well under 1 pound if I found the right conversion -- which definitely seems like it could be a fluctuation of major current water weight from all that watermelon and bulk from veggies  -- and all IN the context of a WAY more than appropriate weight of 117 lbs at 5'3", so maybe I'm a little confused as to what an actual problem here is?

Except for maybe you just want to be much more gentle with yourself, enjoy your watermelon, but maybe ease up and substitute even the second half with some other food group depending on what ELSE your 2000 or whatever total is comprised of, right?

Yes.  As everybody has said, it's true that a calorie is a calorie and you'll gain as much on 700 calories of watermelon as you would with 700 calories of burger & fries.

But I've never heard of anybody getting fat because of too much watermelon.  Burger and fries on the other hand...

If you go over your calorie allotment every now and from healthy food, I wouldn't beat myself up over it.

It is POSSIBLE to gain weight from eating any type of food if you eat more calories than you burn.

But by focusing so much of your intake on one single food item, you are losing out on the potential benefits of a VARIED diet.

Why on earth are you "wasting" so many (over one third) of your allotted calories on watermelon, every day?

To me this seems like disordered eating.

Instead of panicking about the number of calories you consumed, a better question would be why do you feel compelled to eat that much watermelon each day?

Cut back on that a little and add in other fruits and vegetables ... or even better... more protein. Seems to me you might be seeking that full feeling and you'd get that from a decent portion of protein too.

I won't restate the whole calories in vs calories out thing, but after eating that much watermelon I bet you really had to pee a lot ;)

This.

szaff - I checked your old threads (from 2009) and I think you might be slipping back into your old habits. Your current stats are perfectly healthy - and I worry that you are eating a lot of watermelon to avoid eating other foods.

Drink more water, eat less watermelon.  Watermelon isn't very filling.  Try foods with more fat an protein content, they should help to make you fill fuller on less total calories.

All things in moderation, including watermelon.

wernt you bloated from eating all this watermelon?!

i eat a bowl of watermelon and my stomach sticks out like im 9 months pregnant.

yepp, I felt bloated:)

Yeah....maybe you're right...I mean...I ate a lot of w.melon because I wanted to avoid bingeing on other foods...but it doesn't work...Know I know that yess it is possible to gain weight even from fruits...
