Professional Metabolism Assessement
I'm considering getting my RMR assessement done by professionals. It costs $179 though! Does anyone have any experience?
Is it a local professional assessment like with a Certified Nutritionist, or one done online?
And a description of the test here: http://www.freshfitness.ca/pdf/RMR%20Forms%20 Package.pdf
Original Post by rokamortis:
I had it done but the results were nearly half of what the estimates here were.
Did you burn half as many or did they say you needed to eat half as many?
because in the past I have been told I burn 1110 a day but on here it says i burn 1600 base
rokamortis: how high was your RMR? What are your stats?
I am male, 5'11", and 300 pounds at the time (early November 2007).
The machine used was a bodygem. The test showed my RMR as 1790 but then adding in stationary lifestyle it went to 2148. CC estimated I burned 3140 per day sedentary. I averaged eating about 2150 calories per day.
The CC numbers made sense since I was losing about 2 pounds per week consistently without any exercise. My calorie target is 2000 now and I weigh 267. CC estimates my daily burn at 2900 sedentary. I'm still losing about 1-2 pounds per week on average but have added in a little exercise.
I visited your profile. I too am 5' 6". I have a large frame. I exercise 6 days a week for 30 mins and my job requires sitting most of the day. I'm 183 lbs.
My Calorie Count profile said that 1900 would maintain my current weight but to lose I should consume 1450 a day. I have been sticking to that MOST days and losing 2 lbs per week just as they said.
I hope this helps. If you'd like more info just email me. I'm always happy to help.
I just looked at your profile...I think your body fat percentage is off, 10% is unusual for women, even athletes.
I'm 5'5", a medium frame with a lot of muscle weighing 150 lbs and my body fat percentage is 25% from the impendence test I just took and 30ish% on my scale.
I considered doing one of the evaluations at a local place, but I found it frustrating that I couldn't get more information about it online. Essentially they want to get you in in person where they can sell you more. My local city college has a PE class that is like a gym and they do all kinds of fitness testing there so I'll be getting it done this semester for free.
They gave me 1470 calories per day. Which is the number that would be ideal for me to lose weight without exercise. I think that CC's numbers are fairly accurate, their calculators give me 1800 calories per day for maintenance which seems to be close. The calorie calculator gives me 1500 calories for light activity to lose the next 15 lbs at no more than a pound per week...I think .5 lbs is probably more accurate.
It seems to me that now that I'm closer to a normal BMI range that my weight loss rate has slowed and sometimes stalls out completely, but my clothes fit better and I feel very healthy so I refuse to obsess about it.
First of all, the girl who did the test said I didn't look 163 lbs :)
The test was a little awkward. They strapped a mask onto my face and instructed me to breathe through my mouth only. I'm a nose breather so as soon as the thing when on, I felt like I couldn't breathe! That passed quickly and I sat in a chair, breathing through my mouth for 10 mins. Quick & easy.
My results:
1788 (My RMR) + Very Light lifestyle (I work in an office, though I go to the gym 4-5 times a week) =
2324 (Total Daily Calories)
I can't even believe I'm supposed to eat that much! I'd say I'd usually eat 1700-2000. Now I have permission to eat more!
Another cool part of the test was my "fuel mixture" which means that when I burn calories, which percentage is fat and which is carb. My Fuel Mixture is 71% fat : 29% carbohydrate. The idea ratio is 80%:20% so the girl said I was doing good. My ratio is high because I already have a lot of muscle. Yay!
She reviewed my Food Log (which I posted in yesterday's journal entry) and said it was great. I'm eating a variety of healthy foods, getting a lot of fibre and including the major food groups in my diet. However, she commented that I should eat more protein, particularly lean animal protein since I was getting ~50-60 g/daily and I should be looking at 90-100 g. I had no idea. She also said CUT OUT THE ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS! They are chemicals and totally mess with your body. This wasn't news to me but I'm going to find it hard to quit having sweeteners in my morning coffee. That's really the only time I use them though, so I shouldn't have too hard of a time eliminating them.
We also talked about pre- & post-workout nutrition. She also suggested that I eat a complex carbohydrate + protein before (ie: whole grain bread + peanut butter) & a simple carbohydrate after working out (ie: banana + yogurt) so I could see optimal results. I usually just had a yogurt with some All Bran Buds beforehand. I'm excited about this because I was always really hungry after the gym and it takes me 45 mins to get home so I never felt like waiting an additional 30-45 mins to cook some supper, and I usually grabbed (healthy) leftovers.
So, that's about it. It was really quite interesting and it's good to know that I'm definitely doing the right things and only minor adjustments are needed. Go me!
(x-posted to my journal)
I came across your post this morning and was going to suggest you have your RMR professionally checked, but I see you beat me to the punch.
I recently had my Metabolic Screening performed just this past Tuesday and I came up with some similar results.
I'm much older than you; 50, but I'm 5'6"1/4 ( shocker, because I always thought I was 5'7"), I weigh 154 lbs. I work out 5-6 times a week pretty intensely, but have a desk job during the day.
When I put in my profile here at CC the numbers were all over the place, they indicated I should eat 1200 calories on a day that I don't work out and more on days that I had my spin class, or my boot-camp. I was hungry all the time, and I would gain a pound, lose a pound. It was quite frustrating.
I discovered thought this metabolic screening (New Leaf) that I have a resting burn of 1720!!!! Unheard of for a woman my size and age. With a light lifestyle added in I burn 2236 per day. This is before any exercise. I found my fuel mixture is 85% fat 15 %carbohydrate. I have 27% body fat, and I would like to get it in the 20% range. They gave me a number called a V02 max it is considered your horse power for your metabolism... mine should be some where around 23, it is in fact 46.3. All these numbers were considerably higher than the information I got from CC, but it's understandable. We are all not built the same. So to make a long story short, in the past few days that I have been able to implement my calorie intake of 1720 or more, I've lost 2 pounds! I can't believe it. I feel like a different person. I feel better knowing my exact numbers. However, I was reluctant to believe the machine. It took my thick skull a few days of thinking about this whole thing before I could apply the information.
Glad you had your screening completed and you know exactly where you stand.

Cell-
I agree this is all very time consuming, and the longer I stay at it I feel like I am getting addicted. This must be how drug addiction starts ( lol)
The V02 max reading was out of the same test for me. It has to do with the amount of oxygen that you utilize while resting/ working out..... I don't quite understand it all. You may want to take a 2nd look at your print out that they gave you concerning your screening, possibly it is hidden there somewhere. Unless they told you up front that it was an additional test. Is that what happened?
I am interested to see how things go for you. Would you consider adding me as a friend and keeping me informed. Other than the age, we have similar goals.
Have a good day!

Considering the fact a large chunk of that 300 pounds was fat, I think 1790 calories is pretty accurate for you RMR/BMR. Only metabolically active tissue (muscle) has any effect on you basal metabolism. Obviously a 300 pound bodybuilder with 3% bodyfat would have a much higher metabolic rate.

This is a perfect example of genetic variance from person to person. Obviously some people are genetically prone to slower metabolic rates, while others have a metabolism comparable to a blast furnace. This relates directly to the idea of body types. Those that are endomorphic tend to have lower BMRs, while ectomorphs have much higher BMRs than their size would suggest.
I know this is somewhat off topic, but have you considered just putting sugar in the coffee? If you're only using a teaspoon or two per day in just that one thing its not too many added calories!
thanks for all the info about the professional assessment.
