Exact same problem. Is it a dial-scale? Upgrade to digital.
Depending on where my dial-scale is in the bathroom, I can lose or gain upwards of eight pounds in mere seconds.
My scale only lies to me it would seem..
It's busy telling me that I haven't lost ANY weight (not even an itty bitty 0.1 of a pound) in the last 4 weeks, despite the fact that my clothes are hanging off me.
I know I haven't gained any muscle.. or changed my sodium/fiber intake.. it's just being a meanie pants.
Meanwhile, it's happily telling my bf that he's losing a pound or so a week.
I too may invest in a new scale. Stoopid scale.
I own a Tanita scale which I am quite happy with, but the body fat % read out is of no value for me; it is notoriously off. As far as accurate weight, though, it is outstanding. I have checked it against "professional" scales and have placed on it weights ranging from 25 pounds to 100 and gotten accurate results.
I have moved my Tanita about, but the most change in my weight has been one or two tenths of a pound. My sister, who had a rather old scale, use to be able to put the scale on different parts of her bathroom floor--since she lives in an older house and the floor is far from level; and she could "control" her weight by 4-6 pounds.
I have the same problem. I have a digital scale though and it is off by 3lbs. I just rely on the scale at the gym.
Every morning I weigh myself about three times. The first time is always, and I mean always a pound heavier than the subsequent two times. And I don't wait at all between the weighing. So I totally hear you on this. :P I have a digital scale, the cheapest one i could find at my drugstore. It works well if you don't mind trying multiple times.
I had the same problem recently. Mine seemed to fluctuate 3 lbs in either direction no matter when I stepped on it. I could step off and immediately step back on and it would be different. I bought a new digital scale last night. It seems to be better, but who knows.
Yeah I think i'll be buying a digital scale at the weekend
and yes my scale only lies to me to lol it seems to work fine for the boyfriend
gahh the trials of dieting
anyone got and fave brands / types of scale ?
advice appreciated
OK, a few minutes ago, I decided to test my Tanita scale (The model I bought cost me $59 just over a year ago -- I believe they are lower-priced now). I weighed in 11 different locations about my basement, always putting the scale on a bare concrete floor. The first and last places I weighed were in the place I do my morning weigh-ins. The middle 9 places were placing the scale in different directions and throughout the basement as spaced out from each weigh-in as possible:
- 173.8
- 173.2
- 173.8
- 173.4
- 173.8
- 173.2
- 173.8
- 173.8
- 173.4
- 173.8
- 173.6
Now, obviously according to the above results, I did not weigh exactly the same each time. But, on the other hand, there is such a slight difference from the high of 173.8 to the low of 173.2 that I am satisfied with the overall accuracy of the scale.
Note: I weighed 172.8 this morning on first weighing -in. That was before my big breakfast and pot of coffee and before I begin my exercising for the day.
I have a Salter digital. My bathroom floor isn't particularly even, so I've gotten into the habit of moving it and taking at least three measurements, then averaging what I get.
Generally the spread is 2-3 lbs. For me this is not a big deal because I'm looking to lose a much larger amount, but I can imagine this would be super frustrating for someone just working at 10-15 lbs.
I have no vested interest in recommending or not recommending Tanita scales. I am simply reporting the test results I have done using one I bought about a year ago.
Test number 2: I weighed myself five times, around 1 minute apart -- allowing the scale to "turn-off" each time. My test was to see if I could "shift about" on the four scale pads on the Tanita surface and change the weight. I tried this 5 times and these are the results:
- 173.0
- 173.2
- 173.2
- 173.0
- 173.2
Test number 3: I used a 25 pound free weight and placed it on the Tanita scale, but each time I placed it in a different position so that the weight did not touch each of the four pads in the same amount.
- 25 pounds
- 25 pounds
- 25 pounds
After conducting my 3 tests, I am more than satisfied that I am getting an accurate weight within a couple of tenths, anyway.
I just use my wii fit as my scale, even though its on carpet its the same if i weigh myself a bunch of times in a row. i like the graph feature
Eh, after reading through this again, I decided to see what other scales are out there. On Amazon there's a scale with over 1,000 5-star reviews, and it's under $30.
I read review after review of people saying that it's super accurate, even when the load is shifted.
I just went ahead and ordered it.
