*EDITED December 17, 2012*
I'm Sara. I know there's a bunch of "short girls" clubs but I can never seem to find one that fits. It's always "5'4" and under with a lot to lose (40+)" or something too specific, so I decided to create my own group! This is for shorties (like, true, honest, really-freaking-short people... 5'3" and under please) to vent, trade advice, or just chat. Here are my stats:
It amazes me how people so close in height can have such different goals and plans, so I'd really like to share.
Our weigh-ins are every Wednesday morning, if you would like to participate in that. The scale isn't everything, though!
Oh yes - infamously tagged as the hypocrites. I was too. =) Crazy that we have that in common, though.
Also realized that I never posted my cal intake either - usually between 1400-1500, depending on the amount of activity during the day. :) Kind of eat when I get hungry: I have three meals a day, plus low-cal, healthy snacks to keep my metabolism moving. It's been going well.
Stepped on the scale today - 163.1.
I definitely did a dance. :D
I'm Sarah a 21 year old college student and I also am in a sorority =]. I have been dieting for what feels like my whole life and have been up and down, up ever since starting college and stopping sports...turning 21 didn't help either. So here are my stats, I would LOVE to join your shorties group. I also weigh every morning!
For exercise I go to the gym for atleast a half hour every day during the week and if i miss a day I go double the next day. On the weekends I play tennis/jog outside/ go mini golfing. Something fun for a change of scenery!
Thanks for the advice, sarabliss.
I'm definitely looking to tighten, I'm not afraid of weights anymore, and I have deiced to start the P90X. Today I did the Fit Test, and I still need to get a heart monitor and some new tennis shoes. My budget is very strict right now, or else I would have joined a gym and worked out as I did before. I'm glad I have a co-worker that is nice enough to let me borrow the dvds b/c I've been thinking about this program all day. I'm doing the nutrition my way, so we'll see how it goes.
I'm all about trying new (extreme) things to keep me from getting bored with my routine. I've tried Bikram (hot) Yoga, and running (it's extreme when it's 90 to 95 degrees outside). P90X is my next task, and can do 90 days.
How's everyone been eating today? I have to say that I can't let bad habits die. I had donuts for breakfast (yes, even after doing my Fit Test), and b/c I had an awful morning I ate too much for lunch. No fruit or much veggies in my day today, but plenty of water. I'll try and redeem myself when I get home from work.

Hi Fellow short people! LOL
I too amd 4'11 1/2'' and weigh 181.2 currently. I am 27 years old. I really need to focus more...I'm down about nine pounds since starting, but I am really not great at this diet thing....I don't eat BK or McDonalds, etc.
I get so discouraged and I have to fit into a wedding dress for June of next year dammit! Help!! I go to the gym for 40-70 minutes five days a week.
I need to find a steady pattern for me. Somtimes I get cravings for something, then I overdo it. It's frustrating at times. Help!
O yeah, I should get down to like 125 or something, but I would be more comfortable just getting to 145 for now...then take it from there...anything would be better than my current 181.
Awesome that you're setting short-term goals and long-term goals. Put dates for your short-term; by when would you want to loose the 40 lbs? This will help you keep up with time.
Also, what are you doing at the gym? Just as Sara suggested to me, lift weights if you aren't already. When you build muscle you burn more fat.
Believe me, you don't want to be like me 1 mo before the wedding. It fit great when my dress arrived and by my 2nd fitting the zipper wouldn't go up. I lost enough weight but gained some back again. The day of my wedding, I looked pretty tight, and when you have big boobs, it's not good.
I'm a shortie! *waves*
first goal: 134
second goal: 120
ultimate goal: 110-115
I'm very active. I run about 4 times a week 2-4 miles, I do a weights class twice a week, and I walk almost every day for 4-6 miles with my husband. I'm off work for the summer (at least for the next two weeks!) so I'm sure I'll be a little less active once I'm working again. Oh well.
I eat about 1350-1400 calories a day.
Being short has its challenges. Every bit of extra weight shows. Also, there's a tendency for me to look "stubby" if I gain weight. I really feel and look my best if I'm under 125. I have small features (except for my thighs which are enormous compared to the rest of me) and a small frame. When I was under 125 people always said I looked very tiny, and I rather liked that way better than looking "chunky" like I feel like I do right now.
I'm choosing a lower weight goal because this allows for some variation (I gain a huge amount of weight every mont) and it allows for some bad food times, like during the holidays or on vacation.
I try to eat 1200 calories a day, but I often fall short by 100 or so, and every now and then (like 3 times within the past month) I will go over by around 200.
I work out 6 to 7 days a week.
This is the end of week 5 for me. (I started Monday, June 28th, 2010)
Oh, and I weigh in Monday mornings.
@xfruitbat - I don't know about you but one of the big reasons I joined, besides having something on my resume, was because I have a much harder time making friends with girls because I was such a tomboy growing up. Not that I have anything against them, it's just more awkward for me to introduce myself to them I guess, so it was a really good thing. And yeah I eat about the same amount (or I try to haha) and congratulations on your weight loss!
@sarahrosed - Welcome to the group, love. My first piece of advice is stop calling it dieting and start calling it "eating right!" I don't know about you but I'd rather not do a quick-fix (because it usually means I gain all the weight right back once I give it up haha). I've found that the harder I've tried to eat healthy, the more my pallet has changed. I no longer crave chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream and french fries, I crave baked potatoes and sherbert, and other replacements like that. It's not much, but it's a start. :P Your weekend exercise sounds so fun! I really need to start switching up my routine haha I don't want to get bored and stop going!
@jhaynes08 - You're much braver than me! I've never looked into p90x but I know it works for everyone that's stuck to it. I've heard of Bikrim and I really want to try it! I ate pretty decently today, but I had a couple of my boyfriend's toasted ravioli's (a St. Louis specialty) from his dinner plate tonight, but my view on it is that as long as I count it in my calorie log, I can just portion things out around it the rest of the day!
@olehcat - Welcome to the group! I wish I could run that much, hopefully I'll build up to it after I finish the Couch to 5K. I know exactly what you mean about looking stubby! I totally miss the "curvy" stage and go straight to bulbus.
@elle_cc - Hi there miss! My first thing is that no matter how tall you are, you have to have AT LEAST 1200 calories a day to stay healthy. You won't lose weight if you fall short of it, because your body will start to cling onto every calorie you put in your body. If you're approaching the end of the day and you're still short calories, grab a handful of almonds or peanuts. And 1200 is minimum for someone NOT exercising, and it's also for someone over 21, so for you, you should enter your stats here: www.phord.com/cc and figure out how much you should be eating to lose weight. It sounds insane but I started losing more when I started eating more!
Sarabliss, you should try Bikram. I absolutely loved it, and plan to go back. I stopped b/c it's a monthly fee of $180 and I got prego. You have to drink about a gallon of water a day b/c you'll sweat it off at the 90 min session. I do have to say that it's easy to be discouraged after the 1st session b/c you feel like you're gonna pass out the 1st time, but if you go again the next day (which is what they recommend for 1st timers), you will feel amazing. Of course, you'll meet a lot of "flower power" type people there, which is a tad annoying and encouraging, but I would rather do that any day of the week than get on a treadmill to nowhere. I'd love my mom to go b/c it's so easy on the joints.
Elle_cc, when I am short a few calories I drink a glass of milk. It gives me just enough, and I fill my calcium need. Now that I'm tracking my food, I've noticed that I eat a lot of protein, so I don't need to eat almonds but is still a good and yummy treat. Track your foods, and fill your needs at the end of your day. As far as being over, sweat it off. The other sight that I like to look up foods is calorieking.com b/c it tells you what you have to do, run, swim, or bike , anf for how long in order to burn those calories.
I hope y'all had a successful day, and I'll have an update tomorrow after my 1st day on P90X.
I looked into Bikrim at my local gym and they don't have classes, they just have regular yoga some mornings and evenings. And I KNOW they don't have it at my college haha. I'll have to find somewhere else to try it because that sounds amazing.
Yeah! a short group that actually is actively posting!
i'm really going to try and get back to counting my calories because this last month i've been all over the place and summer is no longer an excuse. i start my freshman year of college in a little over three weeks and i'd really like to be 108 by then and have my eating under control because i do not want the freshman 15. i'm a ballet dancer so i'd really like to get back to feeling better about myself while i'm dancing and not trying to hide my body. i also want to be healthier with my eating. i seem to have this all or nothing mentality that i can't conquer so i either eat all healthy or not at all or eat exactly the calories i'm supposed to or way to many. cause it is summer, i only have ballet class four times a week for 90 minutes. i want to try and add yoga and pilates back into my routine and maybe start running because you all are inspiring and to run straight for thirty minutes would be amazing! ballet is more like sprinting, especially since we aren't rehearsing right now, so my stamina is awful. and i usually weigh myself every morning. anyways, too much information.
best of luck to everyone!
@lofudge13 - If you're 112 and you want to lose 4 lbs in 3 weeks that's totally do-able! And that's what this group is for - to keep you on your toes and on track to lose the weight you'd like to lose and be healthy! I TOTALLY know what you mean about the all-or-nothing attitude. That's how I used to be and that's why I kept gaining it all back. I would "diet" as opposed to "eat healthy" (diet implies I only did it for a short amount of time). This time though I've tried really hard to stay on track, and my biggest test so far was about a month ago I had to get my wisdom teeth out, so I couldn't eat much, then right after that my great-grandma died so I had to deal with the funeral and wake (at which I ate TOO much), and the old me would have given up around this time and fallen back into my old patterns, but the new me was like "No. You've lost 11 lbs. People are saying how great you look. You need to keep going and stay healthy - you know you feel better." Ballet is so beautiful, by the way. I have always loved to dance and I took random classes when I was very little but I wish I could have stuck to something. If you want to take up running I DEFINITELY recommend Couch to 5K.
About me today... I hate this plateau! For about two weeks I've just been bouncing back and forth between 131 and 129 lbs. I've been working out 4-5 days a week and eating about 1300-1500 calories. I have goals this week since I leave on Saturday morning to go back to school:
- Finish Couch to 5K Week 6 (which should be completed this morning in about an hour and a half, yikes!)
- Eat at least 2 servings of veggies a day.
- Go to the gym 6 times before I leave (today, Sun, Mon, Tues, Wed, Thurs)
- Drink at least 8 bottles of water a day.
I hope these things help shake the plateau and get me back to losing! Anyone have any other suggestions?
sarabliss, it's not a class you can take anywhere since they have to use special flooring, humidifiers, and heating. Try google searching in your city. There are 5 centers in my city, Houston, which still isn't enough b/c I live in the suburbs and the closest is a 30 min drive.
lofudge13, welcome. Instead of thinking that you have to do all or nothing as far as food. Take it 1 meal at a time. Think of how many less calories/fat you'll eat if you eat McD's for lunch and baked chicken, brown rice, and green beans for dinner, instead of pizza for dinner. If you get hungry too quickly, always have some snacks. Since you'll be starting school soon, have some dry fruit in your backpack or some kind of nut instead of m&ms. If you'r2 staying in the dorms, choose the healthy foods at the cafeteria instead of the fried rice or pizza. If you do choose pizza, just get 1 slice and get a salad on the side. Everything is about choice and everything counts, good or bad.
Congrats on starting college! My sis is starting too, and I'm so nervous for her. Study hard and don't miss any classes.
I hope everyone is having a good weekend so far! The trouble I am having this weekend is the feeling that I need to drink as much as my friends when we go out! I know alcohol is essentially wasted calories because it has 0 nutritional value, but it's hard to be a 20 something and stay away from it. Does anyone know a drink low in calories that I can substitute a beer or heavy mixed drink for?
Otherwise, today I think I'm going to play some tennis with my dad being that my gym isn't open on the weekends and I love tennis. I also read that excersing in a way that challenges your brain such as tennis actually makes you smarter! Awesome =]
The weather is beautiful here in CT and I hope everyone else can enjoy some sunshine.
@jhaynes08 - I just looked up locations for when I go back to school, and there's one right down the street from my school offering a student rate unlimited month pass for $70 - is that a good price? I really would like to try it and I have about a month before school starts of nothing to do once I get down there, so I think it'd be a good thing to try!
@sarahrosed - I know exactly what you mean. One of my best friends Brit will have like 10 beers every time she drinks, and just in general my friends drink a LOT whenever they do drink. Try HungryGirl.com for some good drink recipes, and if you're ever in doubt go for the vodka tonic. Your gym isn't open on the weekends?! That's insane! And I believe it about making you smarter haha well have fun!
I'm about to go on this run and I'm really nervous, last time suckeddd. Hopefully something good is on the treadmill TV so I can be distracted!!
sarabliss - that is a great price; it'll also get you out of your plateau. changing your routine will really help. the good thing is that you can use the same pass for any location in the US. Here's the official site, JIC you wanted it. http://www.bikramyoga.com/
Today, I did the P90X Core Synergistics, and it was just as hard as I expected it to be. My muscles are still a little wobbly. I've had a way better breakfast than yesterday, and I've lost half a lb in 2 days. I've taken pics for day 1, maybe I'll get brave enough to post sooner or later. Maybe I'll just wait for day 30 to post both sets.
Have a great day everyone!
Congratulations on starting P90x! You're seriously way braver than me. And I think posting around day 30 would be ideal, you'd be able to compare how far you've come and it'll be a real morale-booster!
I DID MY RUN! I seriously got tunnel vision and almost passed out last time I did this, but this time I did it no problem (minus a little shortness of breath, but that'll happen when you run for 25 minutes haha) and I even managed to do my weights afterwards! Spongebob got me through it. ;)
How many times a week should I try to do Bikram?
@Sarabliss - Way to go for having a successful run! I am more of an eliptical girl...the treadmill makes my knees hurt just looking at it! So good for you! I go to the gym at my college and during the summer it is only open Mon-Friday so that is kind of a bummer, but it also gives me an excuse to try new things. Tennis was awesome today, I even gave my dad a run for his money. Shedding calories while getting tan is a good muli-task. Thanks for the drink suggestions. I LOVE hungrygirl I may go out and buy her new strictly cocktail book.
jhaynes- P90x is definitely too intimidating for me. also, it is really bad, but if i'm not with other people i slack off on my workouts half the time. and i think even if you don't post the pictures, being able to compare and see your hard work visually represented is great to keep up your motivation.
sarabliss- congrats on your run! thats impressive. i think i am going to try and start the couch to 5k program, hopefully within the next week or so, but if not i'm really going to try and establish that when i go to college. how long is the program?
sarahrosed- the drinking is hard. i am underaged and i don't drink barely ever, but a lot of my friends do and it is always hard when i'm with them and they are drinking. what i like to think is would i rather spend the calories on beer or a slice of chocolate cake since it never seems to stop at one drink, but that could just be me with the all or nothing. and i think that exercise that is also intellectually challenging does make you smarter. i know ballet has improved my memory a ton so i remember things better than most of the kids in my classes. also for me now it is hard to do something like running that isn't mentally challenging as well, but that could just be me making excuses.
as for me, the day has started off well, good breakfast and i'm going to really work hard to keep eating healthy and not overeating the rest of the day. i eat pretty healthy foods in genearal, i just eat too much. my bread and crackers and pasta are whole grain unless i'm out to eat and i don't eat the super fake snacky junk food or fast food. also i'm vegetarian. i do get plenty of protein though. greek yogurt is my favorite right now. i don't think i'm going to be able to fit any exercise in today because i'm watching my sister and i've got a lot of errands to run. i might be able to fit in a bit of walking this evening or at least some pilates/yoga exercises.
@sarahrosed - Yeah I used to have really bad knees but now that I'm thinking about it a lot of the pain has gone away since I've started running more often! Weird. I'm glad you have fun and let us all know how her cocktail book is! I have yet to read it!
@lofudge13 - Thank you! :) It's a 9 week program and it's 3 days a week. I try and stay active 5-6 days a week though. I do my Day 1 on Monday, my Day 2 on Wednesday, Friday is my rest day and I do my Day 3 on Saturday. I swear by this program and would love for more people to try it. I always wonder if I should just go vegetarian because I rarely eat meat to begin with.
sarabliss -- how fast do you run on the treadmill? If you're going too fast, that might have a lot to do with feeling like you're going to pass out. Start out ridiculously slow and build up speed by maybe doing intervals in which 2 minutes out of every 5 is a faster speed. I know I like to vary the speed within every five minutes or so because it makes the time and distance pass so much faster, lol!
