*CLOSED TO NEW MEMBERS* Shorties Club

Quote  |  Reply

*EDITED December 17, 2012*

I'm Sara. I know there's a bunch of "short girls" clubs but I can never seem to find one that fits. It's always "5'4" and under with a lot to lose (40+)" or something too specific, so I decided to create my own group! This is for shorties (like, true, honest, really-freaking-short people... 5'3" and under please) to vent, trade advice, or just chat. Here are my stats:

Gender: Female
Age: 22
Height: 4'11"

SW: 140
HW: 145
CW: 125
GW: 115
It amazes me how people so close in height can have such different goals and plans, so I'd really like to share.

Our weigh-ins are every Wednesday morning, if you would like to participate in that. The scale isn't everything, though!

@joaree - You're super on track; good for you!

I just finished Workout A of Stage 2 and MAN I cannot for the life of me do the front squat push presses. It's the push press that throws me off because the lightest bar we have is 35 lbs and I feel like that's a lot for a first-timer. But with warm-up and cool-down the whole thing only took 45 minutes! I was surprised. Going to be soreeee tomorrow. Having a protein shake now and got TONS of yummy foods at the grocery! Blueberries, bananas, apples, spinach, tofu, shrimp, rice, lentils, hummus, veggie bacon, egg whites, tortillas, red pepper, lemons, almond milk, old fashioned oats, slivered almonds, chopped pecans, salsa, Greek yogurt, etc.

@sara, yes the push press is hard. I actually did A today myself.  I used 10lbs plus the oly bar, so that makes 55lbs total.  I could only do 2 sets of 6 at that weight, I did my last set with just the bar.  I read somewhere that coming up on your toes (like the book says) is hard on your back, so I just power up over my head with my feet staying flat.  Maybe you could use a loaded curl bar and work up to the oly bar?  That's what I did.  A always makes me sore.

I did something dumb and silly today at the gym that's going to make me sore ackwardly... I grabbed a 20 lb dumbell and 25 lb dumbell instead of 2 20 lb ones. And did all my sets in like 4 exercises that way.  Then I did the wrong type of lunges.  I've been so upset about a confrontation I had with my mother yesterday that I wasn't concentrating....

I love your grocery list, sounds like some great stuff.  Today my afterworkout protein was 1 c greek vanilla, with 1/2 c blueberries 1/2 c strawberries and 3/4 c kashi go lean berry. Makes a good lunch after lifting.

@Sally - I don't even know what a curl bar is/where to find it. I'm still using my free school gym and it's SO crappy. I can't wait to move and belong to a real gym (although the membership fee is going to suck after not having one for so long - ha!) I've done that with the two wrong dumbbells before - don't sweat it.

Off to the gym! Really sore from yesterday's lifting so today I'm going to do HIIT on the stationary bike and read my Kindle. I wonder if it'll have the same effect? The book said you could do it so I'm going to try!

Hi I'm a fellow shortie at 5" 2 and I've just come back from a 6 month holiday/exchange in Asia and I'm back living at home with family and comfort food! My 21st bday is in 5 weeks and I need to look EPIC because I'm having some post-travel blues and image issues are appearing as I cut my hair short n I looked way better with long hair (i have a naturally chubby face) so it will be awhile till it grows back. So I'm just spilling it all out here so I can commit to losing the weight. I've done it before so I know what to do its just motivation I need and the confidence to run in public! ( as I can't afford the gym membership ) I can do it!

LW: 118 HW: 140 CW: 134 GW: 124

welcome rocstardust.

@ sara, I do hitt on the bike most of the time. When I'm done I can't hardly walk straight my legs are so wobbly, you'll have to let me know how you like it.

A curl bar looks like this:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/images/B0000 BYSM2/ref=dp_image_0?ie=UTF8&n=3375251&am p;s=sporting-goods

Depending they usually weight 10 to 12 lbs, and have a 1" bar to load weights on. Until I was comfortable I used one of these with 20 lbs or so on each side.  Does your gym have any standard bars they usually have a 1" end instead of the oly 2" one.  Another thought, you might could do it with dumbells, until you work up to 35 lbs or 45 lbs.  Hope this helps.

@sally - Oh I think I've see one of those in my gym! Thank you. And the dumbbells are a great idea, too. How exactly do you do your HIIT on the bike? I did exactly what the book said to do and I didn't feel any difference in exertion throughout the exercise.

@sara, I don't do it exactly like it says in the book.  I keep the resistance at a low level say 2 to 4 (out of 10).  Then I do 1 min at like 7mph and 2 mins at 3mph for 6 or 7 intervals.  The bike I use if I did it like in the book, I end up going a big hill during the 1 min sections and I just can't get my heart rate up as good doing that as I do staying at a level resistance and increasing the speed.

Good I'm glad I'm not the only one that has used two different weights :)

Sara, sounds like you smashed it. And thanks, I'm really liking that I'm managing to fit the workouts around uni - glad I have a morning break. Yum what a great grocery list. I still haven't gone to do mine yet, apart from a few things for dinner last night.

Sally, HIIT is high intensity interval training right? I love that.

I'm down another kg from when I last weighed so am now 53 kg. Also down half a cm in my waist which means a bit more to me. That makes it 63.5 cm or exactly 25 inches. Plan today: a workout, groceries, study and then going out for a work do dinner with the boyfriend.

@Sally - That makes sense! I think my problem is my bike seems to go up way past level 10 on resistance so going from 1 to 4 feels like no change at all, maybe I'll check it today to see if it says what the highest level is! Your way sounds much simpler though. Off to the gym to do Stage 2 Workout B!

Hi! I'm 5'2 and I have a small frame...I was just wondering what is a good goal weight for this body type? Thank you guys!

@KellyAnneN - 108-121 lbs according to WeightWatchers healthy body weight range.

Thank you!

Hey all, its been a while since I've posted. I actually read everyone's responses but for some reason don't respond all the time lol

@kellyanne- welcome!

@sally- I sometimes do hiit on the elliptical. I will go really fast for like 30 seconds then slow then repeat. Or I will up the resistance, etc. I do like it and its really challenging. I think thats on reason why I love to spin because its so easy to do on the bike and you do it during class without realizing it. Have you tried spinning classes yet?

@sara- Are you still at home in St. Louis? My dad was just out there on Friday at the MasterCard facilities working on a deal, have I mentioned that is also my new company? LOL How's the job search going?

My first week at the new job is over and I am already feeling such a difference in my body. I went to the gym almost everyday after work except Monday because I had to go to the Verizon store but I feel so much better. I am eating 3 meals a day and bring almonds and an apple as a snack. I can already feel my digestive system getting back to normal and my joints don't hurt like they did when I was standing on my feet all day. I skipped the gym yesterday to hangout with a friend and felt like crap by the end of the day because I didn't get to workout. Its amazing how fast we adjust. I have already lost about a lb, maybe more with some muscle gain.

Hope everyone is having a great weekend :)

I managed to get through another week with 5 workout days. Pretty stoked since it was my first week back at uni and at my morning job. Hope I can keep this up for the rest of the semester (although maybe with some small cutbacks when I get to the exam period).  I'm feeling really good.

@burton - Haha omg that's so awesome, but no I just got back on Wednesday. I talked to JU and apparently the reason I haven't heard back is because the person that was supposed to quit, did, but quit two weeks later than anticipated, so it halted the position for a while, and then during that time another person left the office as well, so there's FOR SURE two spots available, maybe 3, and she said I was still very much at the top of their consideration list so although I do have to wait a little longer it sounds promising! I'm just going NUTS waiting. I couldn't just sit around anymore so I've started apartment hunting. I've just decided to stay in St. Augustine because although I will be commuting 45 min to and from work each day, I'm traveling across the country four months of the year anyway (assuming I get this job) so it really doesn't matter. And if I don't get the job, then I'll find a job in St. Augustine. I just prefer the small town feel to the urban scene of Jacksonville - I'm more comfortable here! Awesome about you getting back into the swing of things! :)

@joaree - That's so sick, good work!

@joaree- that's awesome. Don't you just love when you finally get back into a great routine

@sara- well at least you heard back from them and the chances of you getting a job there are relatively high.  And believe me I know how much the waiting period sucks but we all have to do it. Have fun apartment shopping! I really want to move out but its so expensive in my area and I don't have anyone to live with so I would be stuck with a very expensive rent all to myself.

Gym this morning was great. I even got my brother to come and workout with. He's 15 and does nothing so I was so shocked. I am up to 40 mins on the elliptical and then usually a 10-15 minute cool down on the bike to stretch out my muscles. Then the usual weights and abs and stretching. I'm feeling pretty good

Good Morning everyone.

@joaree, that's great about 5 days a week. I'm used to 6 days but I've been slacking a little bit the last two weeks so I'm looking forward to getting back on track this week myself.

@burton glad you are liking the job. And good job on getting back into a routine.

@ sara it's good to hear that you are on the short list. Good luck apartment hunting.

Me well, I ate intuitively this weekend.  I just didn't feel like counting or logging.  Going back to counting today.  Plan on doing 4B3 at lunch today. Trying to get thru stage 5 before I go to the beach on the 8th of Aug.  Then I'll take a break while I'm gone, only going for a long weekend so it's all good.

This week I'm going to be mentally preparing for a shopping trip with my mother.... I know.... Shopping is something you shouldn't have to mentally prepare for, something I should look forward to because of the weight loss, but shopping with my mother is something I almost HATE, but it's an annual event, so I have to prepare....

@burton - Yep, it sounds good! I just don't want to convince myself in my head that I have the job just to be let down, you know? Aw that sounds like a fun workout, I like going with my brother. He's actually been religiously going this summer (of course the first summer I'm not living at home... haha)

@sally - Thanks!

Just did Stage 2 Workout B of NROLFW and Harry had no set plan for his workout today so he followed me instead! It was fun having someone to do the workout with. I didn't go all boot-camp/Jillian Michaels on him though haha just showed him how to do the moves then let him move at his own pace. Going to be sore tomorrow (him more so than me!)

Got a couple bites for housing - going to look at a beach place tonight and an apartment in a golf course community in the morning! I'm personally leaning towards the golf one because it's 2bed instead of 1 and closer to the highway.

I have been doing the same thing as Burton and have been reading everything, but haven't posted in a while. I am glad everyone seems to be doing well.

burton, I hope you are enjoying the new job!

joaree, great job working out consistently!

sara, good luck with the job!

sally, the beach sounds wonderful! Are you going to Virginia Beach or are you going out of state? I hope shopping with your mother goes well.

I did really well with eating and exercising one week, and then the next I didn't. I am really struggling to stay consistent. I need to go grocery shopping today. My birthday is on Saturday! I bought a new dress and I am really excited to wear it. I am a little upset that I am not even near where I want to be weight-wise though. I am having a much harder time with weight loss than I was around this time last year.

@nmward, no we are going to Nags Head. My mom's bf has a place and we usually get it the first week of Aug.  Most of the time I'm there on my birthday but since it falls in the middle of the week this year, we're about a week after, so it will be a late birthday trip.

Happy birthday Sat. Mine is two weeks from today. Sorry your stuggling,  I know once you go shopping, you'll probably do better. I know I always struggle when I've not gone shopping and don't have all my usual good stuff in the house.

Allergy Remedies
Is It Possible to Go Natural?
The side effects of allergy medications keep some people from using them. Natural remedies can be a great alternative, but some are more effective than others.
