A daily average would be 2500mg for a normal diet. If you are on a sodium restricted diet, you'd need to ask your doctor what that number should be.
I agree with Chief89 about the average daily intake unless you have high blood pressure or are retaining fluid. Then you need to cut back.
Read the labels on foods.
If it's over 20% it's getting into the higher range.
Beware of "health foods and drinks" like V8 juice which is off the rictor scale with sodium (38%! gee- lots of vitamins but drink me and have a stroke).
Surprisingly, many cereals, even healthy ones, are very high. The vast majority of canned and processed foods are. Avoid them entirely if you can, and if not, watch portions and run water over the ones you can before cooking.
If you have high blood pressure (in consultation with your doctor), the Dash Diet is very good and has great suggestions about recipes and food choices. They have a good paperback book you can buy and there is also info on the web about that eating plan.
I'm on a low sodium diet and my goal is to eat foods with 5% or less sodium.
Go check your cupboard and read the labels on a couple of your canned and packaged goods - soups, cereals, noodles. It will be an eye opener and something to consider when you go grocery shopping next time.
It's all fun. Good luck to you.
