What Supplements do you swear by for weight loss?

Quote  |  Reply

Hi everyone,

I am taking L carnitine right now every morning 1000mg seems to be working

I also take green tea capsules after lunch each day - makes me feel all hot without exercising, so weird.

Viactive Calcium chews - 2 one in the morning one before bed

Multi vitamin - almost every day - i try to eat lots of fruits and veggies

i am curious what other people use to help lose their weight and whether it works or not.

i take my vitafusion multivitamin & vitafusion prenatal :)

what is the benefit of L carnitine?

Vitamins and suppliments may help you get the nutrition your body needs, but none of them are going to help you lose weight.  You lose weight by burning more calories than you consume, end of story.

You are right, and I didn't mean to imply that I think they cause me lose weight. I take them as part of my whole "weight loss regimine". I feel better because of the nutrition I get from vitamins, taking and logging my vitamins makes me more aware of what I am putting into my body.

Do vitamins make me lose weight? No!
Are they part of my weight loss routine? Yes :)

adderall

I'm a fan of fish oil supplements. If you can tolerate them that is... I usually take them in the middle of a meal that way I'm not burping fish.

Julie, don't worry, my post was mainly in regards to the OP and to anyone who would stumble across the thread and think that vitamins are the secret answer to weight loss (especially after reading in another post that she has the side effect of "losing weight" with these).

Vitamins are beneficial, they just aren't going to shed pounds.  Only you can do that.  But you already know that. :)

I realize that you only loose weight by burning more calories than you eat but it doesn't hurt to make sure your body is at it's premium with nutrients.

I make sure to take a daily multi-vitamin and I also supplement that by taking 500 mcg of B12.

I also drink 4-5 cups of green tea per day.

I am averaging a 5 lb loss per month.  I'm sure that it's due to my calorie counting but I like to think every little thing helps!  Laughing

Supplements just make expensive pee pee.

I skip them all together. They have never done anything for me except make my wallet empty. Every vitamin we need, unless diagnosed as being deficient, can be absorbed by our bodies naturally with a healthy diet.

HA! That's the only one that works for me!

For the most part, but some people have a hard time (especially if they're limiting their caloric intake).  This is why we have those awesome suggested minimums, because it's pretty much impossible to get proper vitamins and whatnot while eating below them.

A daily multi-vitamin is not a bad investment.  Along with this, if you have something you know you are frequently low on, this is also a good investment.  For example, my calcium and iron are frequently quite low, so it would not hurt to take a calcium and iron supplement.

A lot of people take unnecessary supplements, yes, and they are the ones pissing money away.  Green tea extract?  Really?  Additional B12, especially such large amounts?  Come on, guys.

:) too bad it costs 10 bucks a pop

Only if your insurance doesn't cover all of it!

Thank you for this advise! I usually take fish-oil after a meal, and yes, I usually burp fish. LOL. (Good thing I like fish...but to much is to much.)

I will have to try taking it during a meal and see, if it makes a difference.

I am trying to figure out a good multivitamin for me. Most of them make me feel very sick to my stomach and sometimes make me puke... So annoying!

Do you take them with food? Multi's make my stomach hurt if it's on too empty a stomach. Even a few hours after dinner, and I'll get nauseated.

I take one a day womens and they do make me slightly queasy however compared to other multi's where I get  to the point that I think I'm gonna vomit. I take them in the middle of a meal and it helps.

I use soy protein shakes (for protein requirements) and melatonin to adjust my circadian rhythms so I get proper sleep. I haven't needed anything more at the moment.

But no supplements, I've not needed them really

This is me exactly. One a Day womens during the middle of my meal, or right after I'm done. MUST have food in my tummy.

In reply to a few other people: a friend of mine recommended I take the fish oil right before I jump in bed, and it works great. Any fish burps happen while you sleep! Multivitamins make me feel nauseous too, so if my nutrients are off in the analysis page, I eat a vitatop--100 calories, and 50% of most of the days vitamins.
