Tea or Diet Coke?

Quote  |  Reply

I realize that all cokes and teas are equally bad for you in large amounts and that I should drink water, but would you recommend one over the other when dieting? I ask because the water where I work comes out of a machine and tastes nasty, so I always wind up drinking half-sweet/half- unsweet tea mixed together, or diet coke.

i would say tea is much better for you, especially green tea w/ antioxidants... but my personal choice is diet coke b/c im addicted

When you say "all tea is bad for you in large amounts" I assume you don't mean herbal, no sugar added tea? Because I'm pretty sure you can drink all that you want of that.

Sweetened tea, or half-and-half is not going to be good calories-wise, and once I cut back on diet coke, I felt better (my stomach feels icky after soda, now).

If you drink a lot of the sweet/unsweet tea mixture, you may wind up drinking a lot of sugar/calories.  Have you thought about getting some of the Crystal Light (or Nestea or Lipton or . . .) crystals to make sugar-free drinks from the water?  That should mask the taste?

Personally,  I enjoy the occasional Coke Zero (which I prefer to Diet Coke) but I wouldn't want to be drinking it all day.  Which I used to do.

I think the best thing for you to do is to fill up a reusable bottle with water to get you through most of the day. If you finish off the water that you brought then go to the tea or diet soda. that way you wont have to worry about drinking it in large amounts. But I know it all depends on what job you have and if you have a place to keep the water. Do you have a desk job?

Regular tea isn't so hot for you, but herbal teas are AMAZING for you! I drink this stuff all day long, hot or cold.

Usually I drink about 2-4 mugs of green tea a day... 0 cals, without honey, which I don't use.

I would never dream of drinking diet pop, with all those chemicals.

Try to wean yourself from sweet tea to UNsweet tea and you can drink as much as you like. Or try herbal teas - they're delicious and basically calorie-free. Better yet, get yourself a small Britta water filter and filter your own fresh water to drink.

No, I stay on my feet for six + hours straight. I work in a restaurant.

Herbal tea is actually really really good for you. I drink caffeinated but if you want to drink it in large amounts, I suggest decaf. Diet soda is horrible for your health. It's just as bad as regular soda if not worse. All the chemicals are poisoning your body. (Not deadly of coarse, but bad for your body and health)

Tea is so much better. After I stopped drinking pop about-2 years ago.. I notice I hate it. I tried to drink a diet sunkist, because I use to love them, and it was so nasty to me.. YUK! Then after I had it.. I can't believe what happen next. For 3 days I was bloated, and I could not blame that on TOM.

Any Tea is better than pop- diet pop.. Any Pop.. All that added crap can make you sick..

When I am trying to cut back on calories, I like to drink hot tea because studies show that a hot beverage makes you feel fuller than a cold one.  Also, like Lynn says soda will make you bloated, and it is basically all chemicals.  Most teas grow on a plant.

I love tea and I will never give it up. I live in a cold climate and it is how I start the day and how I end it. I take very little low-fat milk and no sugar. I cannot remember the last time I had a soft drink of any kind and alcoholic beverages are for special occasions, we do not keep them in the house. I do not like sweet drinks or the taste of any fake sweetener of any kind in anything. I am trying to make my food and drink choices as unprocessed as possible,  healthier food equals healthier body.

I totally agree with 1skyprincess.  Try a good tea store or organic grocery store.  My hubby and I drink organic peppermint tea every day.  Zero calories and no need to sweeten it and it is GOOD for you.  Laughing

Soda is sooooo bad for you.  I loved it for a long time until I found out how bad it is for your body.  I have been off of it for 2 weeks now and I dont even crave it and my weightloss has boosted.

Just "food for thought".

To be accurate, two to three cups of unsweetened green or black tea are not bad for you or anyone. Just don't add anything to the tea. Really good Chai tea, or any Mighty Lea or Tazo tea is good.

The Diet Coke is another story. I don't drink it very often bur my students do, mainly for the caffeine. The problem with Diet Coke, for me, is that it makes me hungry, and it gives me a headache, especially if I had espresso before.

FOR ME, is easier to regulate on moderation, and I think, that's the trick. Keep as diary of just how much you consume. I go for tea, because I can drink one or two large mugs, plain, in the afternoon, and feel great.

Since you work in a restaurant could you just bring tea bags with you in your purse. Then you can steep your own healthier tea using their hot water.

Personally I cannot tolerate sodas.. If u look at the affects pops have on you, youll know which is a better choice. Think of the effects it has on your teeth. It ruined mine when i used to.

I drink tea daily.. being Indian.. its the chai tea with some "home made masala" (spice)I add low fat milk and some splenda with it and it is  just awesome. The spice helps combat the acidic effect of the tea, the ginger in there along with the black pepper helps digestion. The cinammon as  you all know has its own benefits. I just let the tea steep with the spice n strain it.

If neone wants the recipe for the simple to make masala in your magic bullet lemme know.

But overall TEA wins handsdown.. just need to kick it up a lil with any variations you like.. u can definitely do with decaf versions which are healthier if you need to sip all day.. n the calories frm the low fat milk wont hurt you as much.. its not empty calories.. u get calcium, biotin and protein in small amounts from it. Just dont do the whole fat. I do 1/4th milk with 3/4th  water mixture.

I think the teas in moderation are better for you, but here's an old trick if you don't like water - use a straw. If you place the straw back on your tongue about half way, you don'r really taste it. You can consume several glasses per day easily. Your kidneys need water to flush out the weight-loss.

yeah, i would lean towards sweetened tea over diet coke - at least it's a bit more natural.  but seriously, begin to wean yourself off of bottled tea and soda...bringing a water bottle from home or a themos with tea is much healthier and will save you money too!

i used to be a SUPER diet coke addict. like five cans a day, drinking it in the morning in place of coffee kind of addict. about a year and a half ago i cut out ALL soda and coffee. i've added back coffee but haven't started again with the soda, since it's something i've gone overboard on in the past.

for me, hot drinks are more filling. like hot herbal tea (no cals and actually good for you). i love peppermint and chamomile at the moment. PLUS i feel much better without putting so many chemicals into my body! aspartame is NOT good for you (in my opinion)! do some research on artificial sweetners and you might feel differently about what you're choosing to drink.

water is also delicious! ;)

Regardless of its caloric content (or lack thereof), even diet coke is bad for you, because it's just a can of chemicals. Herbal tea can be natural/organic and is calorie-less.. yummy!

It is soooo not true that "all cokes and teas are equally bad for you in large amounts"...

Tea (unstweetened), even regular old black tea, has many health benefits that are well documented with plenty of research. There is no amount of tea that is "bad" for you. The chemical content of soft drinks (cokes) may have some negative health effects when consumed in large amounts, but tea is good for you and there is no reason to limit the amount that you drink unless you have a sensitivity to caffeine in which case you could just drink decaffinated herbal teas. If you don't like unstweetened tea try adding a little splenda or stevia to it.

Not sure why 1skyprincess is saying "regular tea isn't so hot for you"? That is just not true.
