How do they do it?

Quote  |  Reply

I've been thinking....how do they do it on the biggest loser? I'm not a fan of the show so don't know the details, but from what I understand those peeps lose tons of weight every week and yet here we are advising to maintain a cal deficit of 500 to 1000 per day for 2lbs a week MAX.

Well...I'm having a little bit of a low self-esteem day and am now wondering if it's possible to get the scale moving more.

I'm working out really hard, three times of week doing full body weight routine (i've signed up with a personal trainer two months ago) and doing cardio two to three times a week (swimming/biking) and play tennis too. I'm only losing 1lb per week with an average of 700cal deficit and I don't mind that the math is a little off and I don't mind that the loss isn't linear and I'm definitely noticing changes in the way my clothes fit so that's all good....but I'm still wondering how do they do it?

Well, their "week" is not exactly 7 days, it can be anywhere from 10 days to 2 weeks. Also, they eat very little, like 1200 cals and work out HARD up to 4-5 hours a day. They also dehydrate severely before the weigh in - laxatives, diuretics, fasting, you name it.

It's a a how. It wouldn't be fun if they lost 2 lbs a week, would it? But I do think it send a very wrong message.

hmmm well that just sounds like....cheating...

and while I get that laxative and diuretics might lower one's weight 'artificially' for the weigh in, as soon as that's been done once then all that water weight would be accounted for so a significant drop on week 2 or 3 etc...would be true mass....no?

maybe i'm just over thinking this as I'm sitting here ....

I agree, I personally do not watch the show but there is reality and hollywood reality. You should trust this reality and not care about the stuff that gets ratings. I lose about 10 lbs a month for the last 5 months and that is more than enough, I am on the high end of losing I understand but it is not through a lack of eating, I eat 2000-2300 cals a day. I just happen to work enough to burn more. and I am lucky to have a physical job.

If you want to amp up the weight loss, I will tell you what someone told me and worked. Jog. Besides the actual workouts and whatnot I jog for about 50 minutes a day 3 days a week and it is hard but refreshing. and it burns a large amount of calories in a short time. for my run I burn about 750. that is a huge chunk of one day just for under an hour.

Yeah seriously (I don't watch), I didn't think that the name of the show was a true pun *eyeroll* When I first heard of the show I though it was a show about jerks then I realized it was reality weight loss competition (or whatever it is considered), I should have realized it was both :P

@herbaltea

You are right the laxative / dehydration thing can work only once. At the next weigh in you either maintain that loss by dehydrating again or put te weight back. They do use drinking extra water to increase weight when they have imunity from being knocked out. So they can have a bigger loss the next week. I've watched a show here and there. They eat the bare minimum and spend the whole day exercising. In some funny kind of way it is motivational because it is tough for them to go so hard at it to lose the weight so fast. That said I doubt that the weight loss they achieved is the healthy / sustainable variety that this site promotes. I actually did not have that much to lose but made a point of not losing too fast. It is tempting to try starving yourself and losing weight "overnight" but you'll damage your health n put it back on and then some.

Yes! I am not a TV person- I am more an online person (games, forums, movies), if I watch TV, it is a show I know/like and even then I usually buy/borrow the series and watch dvds :P It is really hard to make me watch shows on just the TV with commercials (well maybe if I am sick) and I am not a reality TV person at all.

You should remember that the bigger the initial weight is, the faster  it its to shade off the pounds - it goes by percentage of the initial weight, not by the real numbers and includes much more than just burning fat.

Allergy Remedies
Is It Possible to Go Natural?
The side effects of allergy medications keep some people from using them. Natural remedies can be a great alternative, but some are more effective than others.
