Tips and Tricks to beat the bloat!

Quote  |  Reply

So, I'm sure we've all had those days were we wake up a kg (or two to three pounds) heavier because of the good old fashioned bloat.

You know, where you think you've become 2 months pregnant overnight.

It can happen for different reasons; time of the month, too much salty food, binge, alcohol, ect. ect.

What I was wondering was if anyone has any tips and tricks to help the bloat go down? When I used to be at LA weight loss I was told to drink a cup of hot water with the juice of a half a fresh lemon in it twice a day.

I dont know if it works, but I did become addicted to the taste...

Any other tips or tricks?

Keep my sodium content down - I monitor it as much as my calories (for high blood pressure).  Acupuncture - I had bad water retention last week and mentioned it during my weekly treatment.  She did a treatment for it and the next day was so much better.  That was the first time since I started back in April that I didn't monitor my sodium during a weekend away as closely as I should have and after those results I know that I won't let it happen again - aside from the bloating, I felt awful for a few days.

If the bloat is more gasey then I take a look at what I've eaten/drank differently and then try and avoid those things.

  • Heating pads work wonders.  Just rest with it on your stomach...for me my stomach dramatically shrinks in size after 10-15 minutes
  • drinking tea or coffee...Coffee is a natural diuretic, so in other words it makes you pee a lot, thus getting rid of excess fluids
  • exercise
  • as mentioned above, hot (or cold, i guess) water with lemon juice is also a natural diuretic, like coffee, so it helps rid the body of excess fluids
  • doing yoga.  There is a website I found with a list of poses that help aid digestion and help stop bloat.  Here are the pictures of the poses: http://www.helpforibs.com/yoga/pictures.asp#c orpse  and here are the sequences: http://www.helpforibs.com/yoga/sequences.asp
  • avoiding "gassy" foods.  Notice how your body reacts to certain foods, and if they have a negative affect on your body, try to avoid them

The best things I ever did for bloating were cutting out sorbitol and watching my dairy intake.  Sugar-free gum was doing bad things to me!!

These are good tips - when I have had an "excess sodium" experience (chips, almost any soup, almost any processed food, or smoked salmon (love it!) - it takes all of 3 full days to recover from the 2 -3 pounds extra.

Also, as far as cravings, sometimes I crave sodium more than sugar.  I try to not get too "far behind" on sodium, and try to have a very moderate salt addition at least once a day.

you may eat as much sodium as you like & drink a gallon + water per day=no bloat.  If you pee a lot then you won't weigh that extra 3+pounds.  also I love adding thin sliced cucumber to my water & any tea that has dandelion root in it will take all the bloat right out but you must drink the water also.

Lemon water is delicious! I won't even drink my water any other way now.

My bloating is caused by too much dairy and wheat, so I just keep an eye on my intake.

Not good advise for anyone who might have blood pressure problems.  If I go over my daily sodium target I can drink 3 times as much water as normal (I drink 3+ litres per day) and I still retain it for days afterwards depending on how much extra sodium I eat.

mmmmmm Lemon water!

If you have these problems you likely need a lot more raw garlic, omega 3's & cayenne pepper in your life. Also keep losing weight.  Good luck with everything.  get minimum 1 clove raw garlic per day... I do.

does dandelion root have other affects other than being a diruetic in tea?  i always have strange reactions to herbal supps.

yes it is very cleansing & detoxifies the liver.  if you feel at all unwell that is likely your body releasing stored toxins & not a bad thing.  Drink more water to flush toxins out of the body faster.

Sodium is a poison to the body so it stores it in the tissues and then sucks up as much water as possible to dilute it. That's what causes the bloat. Regular table salt is highly processed to the point where it's not even anything you could call "food." Try switching to sea salt. It's much more natural, has lots of minerals in it, and tastes waaaaaay better!

Grapefruits help relieve water retention, too. Be sure not to brush your teeth with toothpaste right away after having grapefruits or lemon juice. That will cause the enamel of your teeth to dissolve.  I don't know how long we're supposed to wait before brushing.

Sodium is essential to the body!  Water follows salt (osmosis). Try using unrefined salt....Celtic Salt, not sea salt.  Sea salt is still refined so the minerals are lost.

Allergy Remedies
Is It Possible to Go Natural?
The side effects of allergy medications keep some people from using them. Natural remedies can be a great alternative, but some are more effective than others.
