Waking up at 3 or 4am hungry?

Quote  |  Reply

For the past week I have been waking up at between 3 or 4 am hungry. I am not starving, just hungry. When this happens I have been eating a granola bar (had this is my backpack near my bed. lol) and drinking lots of water and fall back asleep for another 4-5 hours. Now, I feel like this is a habit and I want to stop this...ugh! (I have tried eating something before going to bed & I am still waking up in the middle of the night hungry) Has anyone else experienced this? How can I stop this and sleep through the night like I used to??

Im 22 years old, 5'10", 133 lbs and eat 1600-1800 a day. How much should I be eating then?

Have you been tested for Sleep Apnea? I used to wake up dying of thirst. I'd gulp a glass of tea (yes, tea - complete with caffeine - never said I was brilliant) and then I'd go to the bathroom. I did this every night and then it started to become a twice nightly thing.

After I started to wake more often and sleep longer, I got tested for sleep apnea. It turns out that even though I "slept" for 10 hours, I actually only slept for 3 or 4 hours. After I got my stunningly sexy sleep mask (not!), I slept through the night for the first time in the longest time.

I never was actually thirsty, nor did I really need to potty. I just woke up because I snored so much that I disrupted my own sleep. Once I could sleep through the night without snoring myself awake, I no longer needed to have a drink by my side, nor do I need ot stumble down the hallway in the middle of the night anymore. You might be experiencing similiar thing. You might think you're hungry.... why else would you wake at 3AM? But in reality, you stopped breathing or snored yourself awake.

Just because you feel hungry doesn't mean you have to get up and eat. You say you aren't starving then what is the issue? The hunger will probably pass. Just go back to sleep. I have had this happen to me from time to time. It really has nothing to do with how much I eat during the day. I ignore it and go back to sleep. In the morning I am no more or less hungry than nights where I sleep through without waking up "hungry".

When trying to "break" bad habits... One is often benefited by waiting 10 minutes before taking any action.  If your craving for food can be distracted by a sip of water and waiting 10 minutes your are way ahead on calories.  (~200/granola bar)  Sometimes for me, bad dreams or wakefulness is as easy most nights as "changing channels" on my thoughts.

I had this happen to me about 2 years ago. I would wake up at about 3am really hungry... But I ignored it and fell back to sleep. You say you're not "starving", so why do you need to eat? That will make you gain weight. Just ignore it and go back to sleep..... It's the obvious thing to do.

This has been happening to me lately too. I wake up hungry and try to go back to sleep but after an hour i feel like im starving. I get up and drink a glass of milk or eat a gogurt (70 calories) I find that by doing this i am no longer "starving" and can then go right back to sleep.

i will be getting tested soon to see if I'm diabetic (like my mom)

Could the problem be waking up when you "shouldn't" and _then_ realising you're actually a bit hungry rather than waking up _because_ you are hungry? If sometime I need to, say, catch a plane and wake up crazy-early, I will almost always be a bit hungry.

Are you under stress? Do you live up north (dramatic increase of light that might be messing up your sleeping pattern)? Recent changes in your daily routines (like a lifestyle change)?

yes, life is stressful as I am a college student. Good points though.

Yeah you want to "fast" at night. So stop that ! Drink a huge thing of water.
