Why do i weigh so much??

Quote  |  Reply

Hi :) my problem is how much i weigh considering how much i eat... im a 16 year old girl, 5'4' and 137 pounds(i lost almost 30 lbs from june-october). I eat very healthy, NO junk food, i dont add ANY sugar, overall im the healthiest person ive ever met :P Everywhere I read it says that teens should eat around 2200 calories, other calculators even say 2500! i work out at the gym every second day(cardio, weight training), on i other days i try to always exercise at home, i walk a lot, just overall quite active, hardly ever sit in front of the tv. I have quite a lot of muscle as well. This is what i eat basically everyday:

breakfast: greek yogurt, healthy cereal, fruit, nuts

lunch: kashi chewy bar, whole wheat bagel, turkey breast, fruit/vegetables

dinner: lean grilled meat, potato/rice, A LOT of lettuce(like half), other vegetables

snack: yogurt/fruit/airpopped popcorn/salad/nuts

I always eat 1800-1900 calories and yet i weigh 137 this much and it even goes up! i dont understand, am i eating that much?? my friends eat junk food all the time and im scared to even eat a slice of pizza because i will gain weight! How many calories should i be eating?? Sorry for the long post... thanks :)

Your body's metabolism adjusts itself with the fewer and fewer calories you eat. It's not expecting any more food, so it's holding onto the fat it can. Additionally, your body is growing (maybe not in height) until into your twenties. You are going to hold on to weight that's going to develop your internal organs and brain. It will shed naturally with age.

With your activity level, you should really try and aim for more calories in your day. I'm not sure specifics, because it would be higher for teens, but try and find a teen calculator to use. You may see your weight go up initially, but it should drop back down. That will be temporary water weight while your body adjusts to a new calorie intake.

Congrats on your weight loss so far and healthy regime! Trust me, it may seem annoying now that your friends can eat whatever they want, but it'll come back haha. Most of my friends are junk foodaholics, and now in their early to mid twenties are gaining tons of weight besides other health effects they will feel in the future.

you actually eat a lot of sugar.

Really? Where?? Assuming her healthy cereal is indeed healthy, the sugar is coming from fruit and a kashi bar. She's a teenager, she can afford to have a cereal bar, for goodness' sake!

OP, there is nothing in that diet that seems obviously wrong. I do think, from a description of your activity level, that you may be undereating. You've lost a lot of weight. I think it may be time to give it a break and work on exercise, for a while, rather than restricting your eating too much. A lot of people have had the greatest success with weight training at CC. I suggest you start a serious lifting program. You'll have to eat more to support it. Head on to the fitness forum.

If you have a lot of muscle (lucky girl!) you will weigh heavier for your height. Don't concentrate on your weight. Enjoy your body, you are so young!

Your weight seems fine to me too. 167 was high 137 is ok. Is it just your weight number that you are watching. That is does your body have unwanted fat ? If you have reasonable muscle you should be heavier without being fatter. Considering your age, n description of being muscular I also feel you should be eating a higher calorie count. You would then probably still have a deficit of 500 calories a day. Then if your body has any fat your metabolism rate would pick up and start burning that.

Take care.

Exactly, how do I eat a lot of sugar?? The cereal I eat is usually kashi golean or these organic bran flakes, which have like 4 grams of sugar in my portion. And the chewy bar also has like 5 grams of sugar, its not the ones with chocolate or anything like that but the 7 grain almond one.

Thanks for all the replys :) im considering starting to exercise even more starting next week and maybe eat some more too... hopefully i wont gain too much ;) i know that im not overweight or anything and i look fine but my problem is that i dont eat much and nothing unhealthy, and yet i dont lose any weight. I was looking for ways to boost my metabolism but everything on those lists i already do.

you are fine, barbie does not exist in real life.
