It shouldn't matter in terms of weight loss what you eat and when you eat it.  Providing you stay within your allotted calorie intake you could eat your biggest meal at 10pm.  Depending on what time you go to bed you may not want to do this as for me, eating too late sits heavy.  But the principal is that you can eat at any time of the day and still lose - you don't have to ban yourself from eating after a certain time.

Are you under eating during the day leading you to want to snack at night?  I like to save 250 cals to have a couple of hours after my evening meal and usually spend them on cashew nuts, wholegrain toast with jam, crumpets or hummus and crackers.

When you say 'best night snacks' what do you mean? How many calories do you want too use?

Take care!

Normally, the reason why so many people overeat late at night is because they deprive themselves throughout the earlier hours. How big are your meals? How many calories are you eating in total, and what are your stats?

Whatever your caloric goals are, I find that it's best to have a dinner that's high in fat and protein, so you don't feel hungry for the rest of the night. But if you really do feel hungry, having a late-night snack will not hinder your progress as long as you don't overeat. If it's less than 3 hours before you go to sleep, make sure it's a light snack which isn't more than about 200 calories. But it can be bigger, it's just that eating too much may give you sleep problems.

I usually try to stay away from carbs before I go to sleep, as they tend to give me lots of energy, and I usually go for something like nuts, a glass of hot milk, some plain greek yogurt with cinnamon and berries, or maybe even a few bites of leftovers from dinner.

^ Exactly this ^

Nights are hard for me because my husband and I used to flop down in front of the television and eat anything that didn't move!  I am trying to to break out of the television cycle but still have a few favorite shows.  If I know it's a television night, I like to save my Cheerios to snack on dry. Some how the crunch makes me feel as if I am eating a "guilty pleasure" snack food. Total would be an even better choice as it is filled with vitamins and iron.

try air popped popcorn............... you can eat lots of it and it is low in calories...plus it crunches too.

I have a handful of almonds, I know they are a little high in the calories, but they seem to fill me up and make it through the night time cravings with the high protein. I also found that water with a squeeze of lemon helps to crub some past dinner cravings.

At night you are better off avoidind carb because your body doesn't need it so you can eat stuff like cottage cheese if you get  fat free one it only has 70 cal and you can had blueberries, strawberries are not too bad they don't have much carb, low fat  cheese, water or go to bed early so you won't eat

Why do you need a snack? Perhaps consider eating a bit more during the day for energy. And, instead of a snack at night, do some jumping jacks, run in place, do some pushups. Anything to create a NEW habit and get your mind off eating. Good luck.
